by Steve Mason

FRIDAY 9:00 p.m. (Pacific): Christopher Nolan’s long-awaited The Dark Knight (Warner Bros), fueled by thrilling IMAX sequences, a brilliantly conceived script and a diabolically skilled performance by the late Heath Ledger, is on its way to shattering records. Lots of them.

my prediction Dark knighht opens up to around 180 million

you'd think they would just total all the tickets sold, it would be far easier across time to just see oh this many tickets were sold to that movie, and this many for that, not hey we had a 12% inflation increase so lets do some simple math...

total tickets sold just seems easier in the long run, but not as fun from a financial standpoint i guess.

(and i doubt it opens to 180 million... 60 million a day for 3 days... bold claim)

So far it has broken 3 records and they predict at least one more will be broken.

Are those inflation adjusted?

Of course not. And Dark Knight won't prove its real power till it surpasses the $433 million (adjusted for inflation - domestic) made by the 1989 movie.

Of course not.

It doesn't make a difference, TDK is still on top of that list even after taking into account inflation.

You run into the same problem, there. More theaters are being built all the time along with...people.

That's what inflation is more or less. It's basically looking at ticket sales, rather than only price sales. When you adjust for inflation, you're getting more of a sense of how many people saw it, rather than simply how much money it made.

That's why Gone with the Wind is so impressive. It sold a butt-load.

the weekend is not even done yet.

we still have all day today to go.

How can they report that?

They always post the weekend numbers on sundays. That's why it says estimates. And the estimates are usually only a mil or two off.

The Dark Knight just broke another record yesterday. It reached $200 million in five days. I really think this movie is going to skyrocket up the list quicker than most people think.

That was a great comic book by the way. The one where Batman and Spidey teamed up and faced Joker and Carnage.

I would probably not have watched Batman had Heath Ledger not die and I think half of the box office goes to that on its own. It would have done well anyway but not this well.
I saw Batman Begins on DVD and then learned it was good and maybe it would have swayed me anyway to go to the cinema for the second film. I think it deserves its praise but a lot of it has to do with the sad outcome of an up and coming actor who is no more.
It may have made its money but it lost its best Character which makes it an even Darker Night at the cinema.

Well, I think you're wrong. He died after the trailers came out. People were going to see this anyway.

That is true and i think everyone accepts it as well. There was so much hype built around his portrayal of the joker that many will go to see it out of morbid curiosity

True, but it also shows that the movie is losing steam. Last Monday it made over $20 million. I honestly don't see this beating Titanic.

Huh?Loosing steam?Yeah but this is also a week later on a busy monday. Don't forget this movie made 75Mil second weekend and every movie loses some steam. You are counting out Batman to fast.

What makes this Monday more busy than the last? Fact is that last week the movie was making like $20 million per day. Now, it's down to $10 million, and next week it'll be down to $5 million. So, the chances of this movie making $600 million and beating Titanic is VERY unlikely.

Alright, I still don't see how thats bad. Titantic did the same thing and the only reason Titantic stands number 1 was because the movie was out 8 months. If this movie can power through and only be getting a million or two, two or three weeks down add it up. It will be right on Titantic.

Tornado
07-30-2008, 03:44 PM
It's making a lot of money now, but it still has a long way to go. I could see it maybe topping Titanic's domestic (pre-inflation) total (right around $600 million), but there's no way it'll catch it post-inflation (around $900 million) or in the worldwide market. I'd be thrilled if it somehow did, but it's not going to happen. Period.

MasterChief117

I'm not even looking at the inflation crap. I'm looking at the pre-inflation which is what I care about the movie passing. After Inflation is just insane.

8 months? Seriously? So does that mean it was playing into 1998?

Tornado
07-30-2008, 04:22 PM
I think it was released in December of 1997, and then played through... I want to say the middle of September, or something ridiculous like that. So yeah, it was out a long time, which is why TDK won't be able to touch it. TDK will be out of most theaters within two months, guaranteed.

MasterChief117
07-30-2008, 04:24 PM
Yeah, if that. I'm just glad that we already know the dvd release of it.

I agree with Tornado, after inflation it won't come close to it. But pre it might be able to do it. However we still have 270Mil left go which is twice as much as it has now.

You guys are desperate for it to pass Titanic. It's not gonna happen, guys.

The movie is already losing steam. Since no one cares about The Mummy I can see TDK being #1 for a third straight week, but I highly doubt it'll make another $70 million. It'll make $40 million at most. And with the $10 million it'll make throughout the week I can see it making the $400 million. Which is great, but that's still $200 million away from Titanic. And I know you're gonna say, "but hey it could make $200 million by the end of August." Um...not really. Why?

Well, TDK first real competition is gonna be released next week. That's Pineapple Express. I can easily see the movie opening at #1 with about $40-50 million. TDK will most likely make $15-20 which is good and overall it'll be about $450 million. But then next weekend we get ANOTHER big movie. That's Tropic Thunder. Tropic Thunder will be #1 with probably HUGE numbers cause the comedy fans, frat pack fans, and Iron Man fanboys will go see it. Then you have Pineapple Express which will slip to #2. And will TDK be #3? Um...no. You know why? Oh yea, cause there's an animated Star Wars movie also being released that weekend. That's right. I bet you forgot about that. In other words...TDK will be at #4 with like $5 million bucks. And seeing as it'll most likely at this point be making like $1 million during the weekday it's total gross will be at like $470 million. That's still like $130 million away from Titanic. You're probably saying at this point, "hey $130 million is not bad, so it could make it." Maybe, but probably not because by this point the school year would have begun and all the kids, teens, and college kids will be busy. So...by the end of September the movie will be out of theaters and it would have grossed like $500 million. Which is $100 million short from Titanic.

Personally, I don't really care either way. I saw it twice, loved it, and I'll buy it when it comes out. That's the extent of it for me.

Looks like my theory is becoming a fact. Friday estimates indicate that TDK will most likely make almost $40 million this weekend. That's still good, but it's not enough to beat Titanic. AND the movie is at #2 under Mummy. With Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder, and Clone Wars being released in the next two weeks I see the movie's box office being affected. I see TDK being $100 million short from beating Titanic at the end of its run.
