I was posting in the 'Cast a Movie' thread and realized how happy I was that I grew up with Back to the Future Parts I and II. Also pretty much anything Spielberg. I really think most of his films, when watching as a kid, really moved me in the direction to follow and critique movies with a passion. What are some of the films that you're glad you grew up with?

who framed roger rabbit?- singlehandedly changed the course of my life for the better, began my lifelong obsession with movies

batman 89, returns- introduced me to superheroes and blew my mind

hell any tim burton movie up to planet of the apes, including pee wee's big adventure...

also, the bill and ted movies.

Watching and discussing the BTTF movies over and over in my family growing up probably doubled my neuron connections. I owe it a lot.

Back to the Future I and II were big for me. I remember playing the hell out of those on VHS. Another that stands out is Batman(89) and Batman:Mask of the Phantasm both I played the crap out of.

My sister and I watched The Last Crusade so many damn times growing up. And that makes me happy.

The Last Crusade was such a good movie. However, I didn't really grow up watching it until I was a little older, my Indy movie was Raiders. :)

then how did you get that simpsons joke about the only reason to see police academy?

JBond

Perhaps I didn't. Did it have anything to do with Steve Guttenburg or Kim Cattral

FranklinTard

no it had to do with the guy who can make noises with his mouth... although the first is good, i recommend it.

for some reason when i was a kid i loved ace ventura... i still like it. but back then i REALLY loved it. This was when i was like 9 or 10.

And swingers was great when i went through high school. I looked up to that movie a lot.

mighty ducks was another good one some one mentioned.... in that genre little giants and the big green were good too. Those were back before family films targeted people under the age of 4.

I was a little young, but ferris bueller was something i got into at a young age as well and has always been one of my favorites.

Back to the Future and the Police Academy movies always bring back memories. Who Framed Roger Rabbit is another one. Still blown away with how they were able to make toons interact with humans. Way ahead of its time. Pee Wee's Big Adventure is another good one as well. The phrase "I know you are but what am I" always sticks out. Others are..

Short Circuit - Johnny 5 ruled
The Lost Boys - "Death by stereo"
The Karate Kid - Mr Miyagi kicks ass
Honey I Shrunk the Kids - felt bad for the poor ant
Howard the Duck - actually haven't seen this in a long time.

DAN!

Basically all of Arnold's movies from the 80s were fun. My personal favorites were The Running Man and Predator. Also can't forget the original Star Wars movies and the Monster Squad.

Rocky IV - Always got sad when Apollo was going to face Drago, knowing what would happen to him.

Robocop - Even though it was gory, still loved it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - one of my favorites. Watched it so many times that I wore the vhs tape out.

The Naked Gun - Funny thing is I didnt get some of the jokes back then like I do now as an adult.

Ghostbusters - awesome flick

Also loved Innerspace and Three Amigos. Those were always fun to watch back then.

Doomsday

Batman-the one movie that bridged the gap from childrens movies to more mature movies, probably the one that changed how I watch movies altogether.

Hook-also one of my all time fav movies that I grew up with, not many people including Robin Williams and Steven Spielberg have seen it as many times as I have.

Die Hard Trilogy/Terminator 1 and 2-The movies that introduced me to action and adult themes (including female nudity!). The action, profanity, and gore just blew me away, and opened the door to a whole other dimension of cinema.

I remember asking my mum to record Terminator 1 once and replaying it to find that there was a 5 minute period of white noise. Not until years later did i realise that she'd craftily disconnected the tv just as the sex scene was about to kick in...

I got to see my fair share of the female form at my friend's place when growing up though as he had all the Bruce Lee films, 99% of which had an obligatory breast shot mid-way through.

Hmmm, I was always glued to the TV watching movies when I was a kid. Clint Eastwood movies were played a lot when I was little, as well as Fred and Ginger, Marx Brothers, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and there was the King Fu marathons. So yeah I digged all of that. Disney movies on Sunday were aces as well.

07-16-2008, 12:38 PM
Not technically. I was born in '87, but my dad had a lot of 80's movies on VHS that I would watch after school.

anyways, movies I loved growing up:

Honey I Shrunk The Kids
The Indy Trilogy
The Die Hard trilogy
Ghost Busters
Twister
BTTF
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Transformers: The Movie
Toy Story
Lion King
Alladin
Terminator 2

it wasn't really explained well enough. it could mean

A) movies that are about the same age as you that you grew up with

or

B) Movies that you started watching when you were young and continually watched as you grew up

iv3rdawG
07-16-2008, 01:07 PM
Pretty much any movies that you grew up watching. It doesn't necessarily mean that it was made when you were born. It leans more towards B on Dan's thing.

Hmm... let's see:

The Empire Strikes Back is both my favorite and my dad's, and everyone else liked Return of the Jedi, so that's all we watched for years. Then one day I saw a trailer for the VHS of A New Hope and I said to my dad, "Wait...there's a first one?"

I watched the original Star Wars so many times the VHS (man I already feel old) tapes got burned out. Ferris Bueller was a nice one as well, and was probably the reason I was always getting in trouble in elementary school.

Wrong. When it was released, it was simply Star Wars. The other crap was added later.

JBond
07-16-2008, 10:32 PM
I'd be willing to accept that it was added for the original VHS release or soon thereafter, but I KNOW I grew up in the 80s asking my parents why the first movie had "Episode IV" at the beginning.

The DVD commentary says that initially when the first Star Wars was released, it didn't have an assigned episode number or name - BUT Lucas had it numbered as an episode in the larger story he was writing (which included the first three episodes). When the film became such a huge success, the sequels were theatrically released with episode numbers. Finally in '81 when the first film was released again in theaters, it was subtitled "Episode VI: A New Hope."

Most people know Lucas had the entire saga planned out long from I to VI before Star Wars (VI) was released. There are only six films, but Lucas has enough story to cover at least nine or twelve films, according to an early '78 interview with TIME magazine.

MasterChief117
07-16-2008, 10:57 PM
Thats insane but I think most people were kind of done with the whole idea of creating more movies after the prequels came out. However, I would enjoy seeing the New Jedi Council and all the new Sith Leaders that came about. Who knows it still might happen.

JBond
07-16-2008, 10:59 PM
Like I said, it was there in the 80's. And if the numbers were there even before Return of the Jedi were released (And "Empire" and "ROTJ" ALWAYS had numbers) I'd say calling them by their numbers to save time isn't blasphemy.

And regarding the 1978 interview, that is often misquoted as meaning he had more planned after Return of the Jedi, when instead, he condensed the movies (by 1983) into 4-6.

MasterChief117
07-16-2008, 11:16 PM
Speaking of Return of The Jedi, I wish I would of got my hands on the Revenge of The Jedi poster. But that is off the topic. Star Wars was a favorite of mine growing up as well. Mostly Empire Strikes Back and Return of The Jedi.

You can get that poster online. In fact, you can get it for any movie. I got some good ones for older movies like Jaws,Aliens, and Nightmare on Elm Street off a website. Come in excellent condition too. Some are kinda expensive though. Tried to order the original poster for '89 Batman but cost something like $80.
