View Full Version : Your Best/Worst Movie Experiences

Complain, brag, or compliment your experiences or theaters that have either supported your film addiction or totally ruined it.

Recent worst - Cinemark in Webster Texas - I went to see Kung Fu Panda during the daytime. (I know, my bad)

75 day care kids too young for the movies while most of the "adults" slipped out and went to another movie. They were peeing on the carpet and worse. It was clearly my bad for expecting to see a movie on a vacation day that I had planned to see.

After the movie there were soiled pull-ups throughout the theater.

Old Best - St. Louis 1975 - Opening weekend of Jaws

It was the old oversized theater screens and we were near the front row with 1,500 people watching. When the shark popped up, it was so freekin huge it scared us to death - again it was 1975. I fell in love with the movies that day.

I liked watching 300 in IMAX. I remember LOTR FOTR was one of my favorite theater experiences too. In Borat the entire theater was laughing so that was cool.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas with Him Carrey was probably my worst experience because some lady was talking behind us the whole time. X-men 2 had a kid behind me that wouldn't shut up either.

Best - too many good ones to remember - I really liked first night going to Batman, Spider-man, and Harry Potter though.

Worst - Sitting in the theater drunk and watching my drunk buddy's puke roll past my shoes from thefloor of the seat behind me

One of the Funniest was "Steel Magnolias" My friend and I were held hostages by our wives. They said we were going to see another movie. Instead the titled rolled the chick flick. The theater was packed. Right at a powerful and emotional scene, you here a beer pop top open. My friend had snuck a 6 pack in his coat. All the theater heard was "Jesus Christ Jerry, you brought a F***ing 6 pack to the F***ing Movies?.....you F***ing pig!!!!!!"

People were sooooooooo pi$$ed off at us. BUT I drank my 1/2 of the beers. The guy behind us kept kicking my friends seat until he gave up a beer to him.

Recent best:

My last movie, 4 days ago when I saw Hancock. My power had gone out because of a big storm, so when I got there it was downpour. I ran into 3 drenched young women outside of the theater, they wanted me to take their picture. I win.

BEST:

Ironically, it was Alien Vs. Predator: Requiem. The movie sucked, but there were only three people in the theater: myself and two friends. We had our own version of MST3K going on, it was hilarious. And it was the perfect movie to do it with.

WORST:

Showing up an hour early with my girlfriend at the time to The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, only to still be stuck nearly in the front row (like two back and on the end on the right). So we sat with our necks craned up at the screen for three and a half hours, it was horrible.

I had a MST3K experience when a friend and I saw "The Last Castle", I think it was. However I'm pretty sure there was ONE other person way back in the theater...who probably hated us.

As for bad, when I saw LOTR: TT in Orlando, this guy's cell phone went off 3 times. The same guy.

Best would have to be the re-release of Grease (possibly '97?) that i went to with around 8 school friends, it was a packed house and everyone seemed to be in a great mood; some of my friends decided to get up and dance in their seats to one of the songs and soon enough half the cinema was following suit, the same friends then went out of their aisle doing the conga (a UK dance where you follow each other round in a train holding on to the person in front), walked down in front of the screen, back up the other side and round the back before returning to their seats. The whole auditorium laughed and clapped through the whole thing, it was such a great moment. I was never a fan of grease before then but because of that day i smile every time it comes on the telly. UK cinema-goers are usually so reserved in comparison to one's ive sat with in the US but on that occasion the Brits were on a par, at the very least! :P

Worst would be Road To Perdition, as the picture was upside down for the first 10minutes. That or the entirety of Lost Souls, which i only went to see (on the smallest cinema screen ever) because the very first Fellowship of the Ring teaser was in front of it.

Deex - That reminds me of all the Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight viewing parties at the old theaters. Everyone sang all the songs and most dressed up in their favorite character. Alcohol is definitely involved. The whole movie is acted out in costume under the big screen. Totally Rocked!

best- grindhouse. all around really fun experience. i even saw it in a crappy theater, with sticky seats, and the couple directly in front of me was drunk and trying to discreetly have sex. normally, this would be a huge turnoff, but i think it's the way this movie was meant to be seen. it was pretty awesome. the only inaccurate thing about when i saw it is the theater was packed. probably the only theater in america packed for it, from what i can guess.

worst- tie: the new guy, and the omen (06). the new guy, the projector messed up and we couldn't see anyone's heads, plus these little kids kept throwing popcorn at us, until we threw ice back at them and hit them. and at the omen, there were a bunch of twelve year olds running back and forth throughout the theater and making noise the entire time.

Best: Grindhouse at 10 PM on the night before it was released. Packed theatre full of die hard Tarantino/Rodgriuez fans. Just a ton of fun and supposedly Quentin, Eli and Rosario were there.

Best- Star Wars Episode III. The opening credits in space had just began rolling and we were sitting in nice seats towards the back. At our theatre the ushers wear these ugly, bright orange vests to distinguish them during a movie. So I thought this guy was an usher, because he was wearing this really ugly bright shirt. He goes up to this guy who's sitting next to a girl and starts talking to him. I thought maybe the guy snuck in. Anyways, the guy standing up just leans in and starts decking the other guy and then this guy's dad runs in and pulls him off and then out of the movie. As he's being escorted out some old scraggly looking guy (who looks like he watches Star Wars... a lot to give you a picture) stands up and yells "That guy is on the dark side!" The most fun part was trying to come up with what they could be fighting about. I think it was the girl, but me and my friends like to think they were disputing something else, like how tall Yoda is or how many moons a planet has.

Worst- Halloween (2007) Yeah this was a bad one. Not only was it an awful movie, but I had a date with this girl who really liked me. She wanted me to keep my arm around her the entire movie, and as you all know after a half hour your arm gets tired. Also, I wasn't into her so that wasn't fun. When I took my arm off her she got all mad, boo hoo. Also, we were in the middle, and on one side was a bunch of little "gangsters" and a whole nother batch was on the other side. The whole movie they were walking around, "squaring up" and just looking ridiculous. I hate it when kids think they're hard just because their shirts are huge. So this went on for the duration of the movie, that being my date was awful and annoying, the movie sucked balls, and these gangster kids kept talking that they were gonna fight and never did.

This is why I hate having our theatre in the ghetto. Welcome to California.

I don't know if that was my worst, but that one certainly did suck.

No, it definitely wasn't my worse. After all, I got to see LOTR with 3 of my distant friends.

When I saw "The River Wild", the film broke before the ending and we had to go home. That was worse. It wasn't a brilliant movie, but dammit, when I see a movie, I want to see the ending!

Also, back when I used to wear glasses, there were a couple of instances I forgot to bring them to theater and had to watch the whole movie either squinting or blurry. That was awful.

Then I seem to recall some thriller I saw where the guy behind me was explaining the entire movie to his girlfriend as she kept asking questions.

Best- The Exorcist re-release (2000)

Got to see the movie in a packed Saturday night showing consisting mostly of high school and college kids and it was incredible. Never heard so much screaming in my life. One thing to see the movie at home but a totally different experience to see it on the big screen. I'll never forget how the audience went crazy during the spiderwalk scene.

Worst- probably the Mummy in 1999.

There were alot of young kids running around and causing a scene.

I think the worst movie experiences for me involved crying babies. I forgot which movie it was but one baby was crying and someone a few rows back yelled "shut up!". Then the father of the baby turned back and yelled "YOU shut the **** up!". The baby didnt fuss anymore though for some strange reason.

Where's my elephant?

best:

Grindhouse
The Mist

worst:

Sleepy Hollow - The halves were reversed in the trailers and the opening credits.
Dante's Peak - Same as SH in a few scenes that it had to be rewound. The movie sucked anyways.
Wag The Dog - In same theater as D'sP, the projection was way too dark. No wonder this bargain United Artists theater closed shortly after that.

LOL... That reminded me when Manhattan came out in '79 my girlfriend and I copped a buzz and we chose it because there was no one else there. Two elderly women were in the middle and we were in the back. About halfway through us getting jiggy I looked over and the 2 women were in our row watching us instead of the movie eating popcorn. I still can't watch the movie.

Worst-It was during Star Wars: Episode III and the theater was packed with some of the loudest nerds I've ever heard. When the Star Wars logo flashed on the screen they all start clapping like retards. Must of been 30 teens sitting there clapping.

Worst-I had to go see Star Wars: The Phantom Menace 5 times because the first 4 I fell asleep in, lol.

Best - tie between Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park. I was totally blown away by both movies. I'll never forget the gasps in the audience during JP when the brachiosaurus first appeared. It was amazing to see dinosaurs on screen look so realistic, especially since it had never been done that well before. As for T2, seeing Arnold do that twirling shotgun reload during the first chase scene also got quite a reaction from the sold out audience.

Worst - probably War of the Worlds. I actually enjoyed the movie but one of the speakers went out so didn't get the full effect of the movie. Also didnt have a good time during Blair Witch Project since I became nauseous with the camera work.

Best - Grindhouse at the Grauman's. 11 PM. Packed House. It was terrific.

Worst - Well, there was the Wall-E one I mentioned a while back. Then there was The DaVinci Code. These three guys behind me wouldn't shut up, going on and on about how they thought the girl in the movie was hot and how much they wanted to do her. I turned around and told them to be quiet, but then they told ME to shut up. I would've gotten security, but they calmed down after a bit, and I was able to enjoy the movie. True, but I don't think it warranted a 30 minute conversation the moment she appeared on screen. I suppose I was in for hell the moment I heard them laughing at the title.

Oh, I found another bad movie experience. Kung Fu Panda.....twice

Both frakking showings, me and Darth had people next to us who were complete idiots. First was a group of teenage girls who walked in 5 minutes after the movie started and started frighting over seats next to Darth, who was not pleased. Then they started pointing out the most obvious crap you can see on the screen ("It's a turtle"), and kept mimicking the moves the characters made throughout the movie, while also making stupid noises. 2nd time, there was this couple next to us, both in their late 20's, early thirties, and they were stupid. Would you believe they guy said "It's a turtle" as well? Then, he would go "Ummm.....okay" whenever he would get confused (seriously, who gets confused at Kung Fu Panda?), and his girlfriend fell asleep, and his cellphone went off.

Where did these incidents happen? At the Archlight. The Archlight! Where tickets are 12 bucks and there are supposed to be rules for this crap. Granted, it was the Sherman Oaks one, but still. Argh.

I remember taking a girl to see Mission Impossible 3 in the summer of '06. Unfortunately England had been participating in the world cup earlier that day and i was wasted by the time i met her; alls i can remember is going to the pub near to the cinema for more beers before it began (bad idea) and stumbling round to the multiplex. It was a very uncomfortable experience seeing as the entire theater was spinning for the duration of the film and i felt nauseous throughout, stopping just short of hurling all over her dress.

That was our final date.

I also have no memory of any of the scenes or dialogue. Waste of £5!

I still think my best times where when I saw Star Wars 2 and three at the midnight showings. They are so cool because everyone there is only there to see the movies, no one talks at all. Plus its just a fun expierence, people are having lightsaber fights in the parking lot, people dressed up, etc.

Yes. This is one of the main reasons I love going to midnight screenings. It was the same yesterday for me when I went to see Hellboy II and there was a Q&A, it was sold out and everyone there was completely quiet and they respected the other audience members by not talking/looking at their cellphones, bringing kids to the theatre or anything like that. You can find the best crowds at the midnight or "special" showings of films.

Best:
Seeing "Austin Powers in Goldmember." This was one of those cases where the positive energy in theater actually improved the film's quality tenfold. Every single joke, and especially the bad ones, got the craziest laughing fits from the crowd. It was like I'd just sat down with a couple hundred of the most easily-delighted people in the world. It was fantastic.

I caught the movie on DVD a year later, but the experience wasn't there anymore. The movie was so-so.

Worst:
Seeing "Zoolander." This was the complete opposite. I sat down with a dozen of the worst-humored people in the world. By the end of the movie, most of them had walked out. And the rest had brought kids, so I couldn't bring myself to laugh at any of the inappropriate parts.

A year later, I caught it on DVD and it had suddenly become hilarious.

Why is it that the people who talk always come in last, and always sit down right beside you though?
The trick is to put yours or your friend's coat in the empty seat besides you. I don't know how many times that's worked for me. I can see a couple of people coming down, looking at the seat.........about to ask if it's taken, then somehow just not ask and walk away. Am I evil? Hell no. They could always ask. Mmhmm. I also need my leg and shoulder room and a place to put at least one of my arms. Cause at times, it's a fight for that. I lift my arm up someone else sneaks theirs in there. And if you have people on both sides of you using up the only arm rests you have which is technically theirs as well, then it can get mighty uncomfortable. Especially when you have to rest both your arms on your lap. I'm a fairly buff guy and with seats as small as the ones I encounter, that is not an easy thing to do when you have to pull your arms in like that. They really do need arm rests for all the seats though.

Wall-E was a good experience a lot of people. There was this little kid who kept asking these random questions...

"IS that the robot?"
"Wait, so thats the robot?"
"Whats the robots name?"
"Is the robot gonna live?"

all these asked in the first 5 minutes of the film.

This is what I got:

"Is that earth?"
"Is that Wall-E?"
"Are those other Wall-E's?"
"Is he making a trash pile"
"He has toys! Is it Christmas?"
"What's that?"(At Eve's ship)

The Christmas one was my favorite at the sheer stupidity of the question. Good thing I got up and moved to another seat before another syllable could be uttered.

I went to a bar before hand, got about 5 beers, and about 15 minutes into the movie I already had to get up to take a furious leak. As soon as I sat back down, I fell asleep until he got to New York. I had to see it again the next day to backtrack. :(

Who remembers drive ins? The sound sucked but the beer was cold. No one cared if someone talked. Lawn chairs in the summer and blankets in the winter. Every Movie was good back then.
Doesn't anyone have Drive-Ins around their area anymore or is it you just don't go for whatever the reasons?
We have one here but it's an hours drive away. I haven't been to any at that one yet but I would love to go eventually. It's only 11 bucks and always plays double features. The next double is 'Get Smart' and a Sneak Preview of 'The Dark Knight'.
I have been to one once when I was a kid of about 5 or 6. I don't remember the film but I do remember that for some reason, I enjoyed the atmosphere of it.

Nowadays you just tune in to the right channel on your car stereo and listen from there. Back then they had the crappy little speakers that hang onto your car window.

Drive-ins are a rare breed now and it seems in the future they may make a return. I dunno. As the old saying goes...."What's Old has Become New Again." I'd like that to become a reality one day.

I went to drive-ins when I lived in Milwaukee, but I moved when I was six, that's why I dont' remember them so well. I just remember being able to stay up late lying on top of my car, and that was good enough for me.

Last time I was at a drive-in was in Kenosha, but I moved from there when I was about six as well. I don't remember much of the experience, but I do remember two of the movies playing were Ghostbusters and Star Trek III.

Best - Jackass Number Two and Star Wars Episode 3. Jackass was great because it was my birthday when it was released and luckily everyone in the theater enjoyed the movie and had a great time. I saw the midnight for Star Wars and it was awesome, people dressing up, even my friends. One dressed up as Princess Leia and the other dressed up like Emperor Palpatine, I mean he looked exactly like him since he was good at Special F/X make-up.

Here's a pic of him:
http://b4.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/00392/41/95/392655914_l.jpg

Worst - I'd have to say Van Helsing. I almost got in a fight with a guy because I thought he was throwing stuff at me, but my friend a couple seats to the right of me was doing it. I couldn't really enjoy the movie because I kept waiting to see if the guy would try and hit me.

We had about 30 screens within 20 minutes driving here in Houston, back in the 70's. They are now, a furniture warehouse, a car dealership, a subdivision, and a vacant lot.

There was a porn drive-in with high walls around it that had the "script" on the A.M. radio. You couldn't really go in the summer because the windows fogged so fast! They never checked ID's and many young ladies where curious as to what went on there. Right of passage and bragging rights.

The big drive-ins were fun. If you didn't like your movie, you just turned around and watched another flick. There was a drive-in on the 610 Loop. Every time they played sex scenes, there were accidents on the freeway.

I miss drive ins.

I remember drive-ins, those were great...I just wish I could remember what any of the movies I saw were. I probably saw the biggest movies in the late 80's at those.

caddyshack and Halloween were a couple of mine. All the B movies and campy teen movies were the rage. Slasher flicks were the best. You snuck up on your friends car and scared the crap out of them when the killer attacked.

The last time I was at a Drive-In was when Batman and Robin was in theaters :(

I was with a date. She had read the books and I hadn't. After about twenty minutes we both realized how bad it was. Our conversation was basically this:

Me: "Holy ****, this sucks."
Her: "This is nothing like the book."
Me: "I never read the book, but this ****ing sucks."
Her: "Maybe it will get better?"
*Twenty Minutes later*
Me: "Yeah, so this still really blows."
Her: "I am so pissed off."
Me: "You wanna leave?"
Her: "No, I've never walked out of a movie."
Me: "Me either."

I've had a couple recently...The first was that I was on a date with my then-boyfriend and had heard Smart People was incredible. It was the most humiliating thing I've ever had to sit somebody else through; it was terrible and both of us hated it. There had been a previous debate on whether we would see it or another film, and so there was a minor drama episode over the fact that we were seeing Smart People at all. But on top of it, the film was awfully disappointing.

Then yesterday my co-worker and I went to see Hellboy II. He was the one who seemed excited to see it and was happy to pay for me. Walking out of the theater, I could tell that he hadn't enjoyed it as much as I had. But just a bit ago I overheard him talking to some fellow co-workers about how horrible he thought it was, and even used it to insinuate that I had horrible taste in movies and was a trendy "film buff."

On that note, though - another bad experience I had is I was again with my (then) boyfriend seeing Prince Caspian with our overweight and extremely loud mutual friend who'd seen it already. All she did the entire time was predict what Caspian and Peter would do next and how hot they both are. It was among the most annoying things to happen to me in a theater.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy there. From the way you worded your posts, it sounded like you were a girl. That's why I asked. I'm probably in contention for being the most liberal person on this board, so don't try and turn it into a homophobia thing. "Discovering" a gay male is not surprising to me. Perhaps he meant you have been rude to posters in the past. I believe it was you who was rude to Knerys (one of the sweetest members on this board) last week when she merely gave her opinion on a movie and you called her stupid indirectly for liking it and continued being rude to her for a couple posts later. Yes, but there was that shaky first 10 minutes with the people who sat in seats next to our friend that they weren't supposed to sit in(reserved seating), and then left by walking in front of us, obstructing our view. Things got okay when the right people sat in the right seats.

Though this does bring up my thing that people need to be on time and not just walk in when the movie is playing. That's why The Archlight (the Hollywood one anyway) follows it's "5 minutes or you can't get in" rule.

Another new favorite: Seeing E.T. at the movie theatres a couple of days ago. I'd seen it maybe three or four times before and have liked it. The last time I watched it was the 2002 re-release, so that was in theatres as well, I didn't really think much of it when I saw it then. This time, though, was completely different. The entire audience was really into it, even the little kids were quiet the entire time. I think I heard some kids crying maybe twice during the film, one in the very beginning when he is being chased and once when E.T. dies, which is understandable. People clapped at the right times (four or five times, I think?) during the first flight over the moon, when E.T. comes back to life, the escape on the BMX bikes and the ending, of course. It was just a ton of fun, the whole school scene was as funny as ever and it was just a wonderful experience. And John Williams' score for that film is his best work that I've heard him do, the entire thing is just breathtaking and seeing it on the big screen with that sound just makes it even more magical.

When it first came out, the music and sound effects were deafening. It was awesome in Dolby. It made it hard to see the screens shrink in size after watching the movies like this and Jaws on the biggest screens. These days I would compare it to the Harry Potter films. Best seen on the larger screens with the best sound systems.
