He's done it all.. rap, hit sitcom, comedies, thrillers, suspense, heros... all he needs is that "Denzel in "Training Day" role and he goes down to become one of great actor all time in the future... up there with John Wayne, Marlon Brando, Tom Hanks, Johnny Deep, etc. All of them have done with villain roles
And he's still very young.. imagine how many more great movies this cat can pump out before all is said and done but I need see him to do a villain roles for a few movie if he can be along with the greatest actor?

Uhhh I would hardly consider him among Marlon Brando and Tom Hanks. The man makes summer blockbusters, not award winning films. Brando has done A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, The Godfather, and Apocalypse Now. Smith has done Pursuit of Happyness, Ali, and summer movies like Men In Black, I, Robot, and I am Legend. I like him and think he's a good actor, but the guy hasn't exactly been in roles that justify him as being up there with the best of all time.

Will Smith would make a good villian. But they'd probably worry about losing potential dollars.

Will Smith is a great actor but studios abuse his talent by catering every movie he is in to appeal to a summer crowd of all ages.

The book moved me more than the movie.
I kind of refuse to watch movies with poor spelling.
Will Smith will never be an intimidating man. I'd just picture him in the goofy cap hailing a cab to Bel-Air.

John Wayne made The Conqueror, Will Smith made Wild Wild West - yeah the paralells in their careers are uncanny ;)

Dude, I Am Legend came out in December of last year. I don't think that would count as a summer movie.:) But yeah as awesome as Will Smith is I just can't see him pulling off the villain role and doing it well.

I don't think Will Smith doing drugs and pretty much ignoring his kid would've made for a very sympathetic character. ;)

The WB offered him the role of Superman and he flat out told them 'NO'.

there's a reason "happyness" is spelled that way.

Let's put the pursuit if happyness aside. Clearly his best movie. Lets look at his huge blockbusters. I am legend, I, Robot, Indepence Day, Hancock. All major disappointments. His tv show was funny, but as an actor its been nothing short of disappointing. All hyped up huge movies and huge let downs.

 will smith kicks ass, he is a really good actor no doubt about it and he makes really good movies, what else should we want? we shouldnt expect daniel day lewis level out of him every time or expect best actor oscar everytime. but what he continually does is deliver the goods in his performances and his films and thats all we can ask for.

agreed, he should have said that he was dissapointed not that everyone else thought it was dissapointing.
Hell Independence Day is the reason will smith makes blockbuster films and a lot of them are released during July 4th.

How is he wrong? 3/4 of those movies were major disappointments. Who cares how much money the movie makes? Since when is that a measure of how good an actor he is? Those movies sucked and he needs to step it up and take on some real roles if he ever wants to go down as one of the best.

Ive been a fan of Smith's since I was little. Hell Independence Day is the first movie I ever saw in theatres. He is the reason I like summer blockbusters in the first place.
Yeah I like real drama artistic films too, but I don't want smith to stop making blockbuster summmer films ever.
He should do both.
Men In Black and Independence Day are great summer flicks, and he should keep making more of them. Even Hancock was a good flick.

I understand that, I just didn't get how he was "majorly retarted" when he was right on the money. Smith is a good actor, but his movies don't justify him as a great one.

I think someone is a great actor when his presence on screen is enough for me to buy a ticket.
No matter what the film is.
Tom Hanks, Daniel Day Lewis, Denzel Washington, Clint Eastwood, Christian Bale... ect are all great actors because IMO there names will make me watch a there film. Because they are in it.

I understand that as well. But look at those actors you've named. They've been in far more than just summer blockbusters, which is what we base their brilliance on. Smith doesn't measure up to them in terms of his movies, so how can we know that's he's great when he's taken so few challenges? He always seems to play the same character, a sarcastic hero. Everyone else you named has played multiple roles spanning all varities of movies.

I get that, I think smith can make better films as an actor. But I think he chooses not too because he goes where the money is. They seem to be paying him a lot for blockbusters than real character study/dramatic roles.
I think what he did as an actor in Pursuit of Happyness and I Am Legend is enough to see the man can act, and if he did decide to make a real dramatic film role he probably would do a great job at it.

Solution: Will Smith plays twins. One good, one bad. Box office boffo! (and a lost sibling for the sequel)
Smith and his agent looked at the top grossing films and the majority of them at that time were sci-fi (your Stars Wars, your ET) so that's why Smith has stayed in that genre. But I think as Smith gets older he'll phase out the "summer blockbuster" movies and go for dramas with the odd comedy every few years.

I still need to see Ali. I've heard it's his most impressive performance, as well as his most underrated.

here you guys want Will Smith too make better acting wise films.
here are the next 2 films he's working on that are not blockbusters, but real dramatic roles.
Seven Pounds (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0814314/)
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1070874/)
The Walrus

I'll also add that he plays an interesting role in The Legend of Bagger Vance - and not just because he's the title character.
I'm looking forward to The Trial of the Chicago Seven. He'd probably be pretty incredible in a courtroom drama, and it's an intriguing historical event.
