This is kinda funny because I just started my quest to watch all of them, finishing with Titantic since I've never seen it. Wings and Cavalcade are hard to get, and I don't think either is on DVD. Here's what I've seen.

2007 No Country for Old Men- 9/10
2006 The Departed- 8/10
2005 Crash- 5/10
2004 Million Dollar Baby- 8/10
2003 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King- 10/10
2001 A Beautiful Mind- 7/10
2000 Gladiator- 8/10
1995 Braveheart- 9/10
1994 Forrest Gump- 10/10
1993 Schindler's List- 9/10
1991 The Silence of the Lambs- 9/10
1988 Rain Man- 9/10
1986 Platoon- 8/10
1982 Gandhi- 8/10
1979 Kramer vs. Kramer- 6/10
1976 Rocky- 7/10
1975 One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest- 9/10
1974 The Godfather Part II- 9/10
1972 The Godfather- 9/10
1965 The Sound of Music (Don't remember well enough for rating)
1961 West Side Story (Don't remember well enough for rating)
1931 Cimarron- 5/10
1930 All Quiet on the Western Front- 9/10
1929 The Broadway Melody of 1929- 5/10

It's actually kind of fun watching each of them through, it really gives you an idea of how much movies have changed.

1958 Gigi
1956 Around the World in 80 Days
1955 Marty

1948 Hamlet
1944 Going My Way
1938 You Can't Take It With You

1936 The Great Ziegfeld
1932-1933 Cavalcade

I've heard that The Greatest Show on Earth is tough to watch as well, and The English Patient too. Trust me, there are some Best Picture winners I'm not looking forward to watching but I think it's also fun to watch a really bad one and wonder how it won. I'm still ticked that Kramer vs. Kramer beat Apocalypse Now and that Shakespeare in Love beat Saving Private Ryan.

I actually really enjoyed the English Patient, I don't know why it gets the flack it does, maybe because it's coming between Braveheart and Titanic.

The Greatest Show on Earth is one of those 'that actually won?' sort of movies. I remember talking with Dracula about it a while back and he said it was just a big advertisement for Barnum and Bailey circus, and he was pretty much dead on. Not a horrible movie, but certainly doesn't rank among the great films, or even really good ones. My personal pick for that year would be The Quiet Man.

Shakespeare in Love however is one of the few Best Picture winners that just made me disgusted when I learned it won. That movie was mediocre on every level, bland, predictable, and even for a chick flick it was still just average. But think of it this way, which movie do people still talk about? That or Saving Private Ryan?

Another one I really didn't like that Dracula gave me the heads up about was Cimmaron. So racially stereotypical and dull.

BTW, did you ever see Quiet Man, Drac? If so what did you think?

I've almost memorized the ones from 1970-onwards but not so much with the older ones.

Yeah I understand what you're saying about Saving Private Ryan, but it is still a snub much in the same way that How Green Was my Valley isn't a bad movie but beat what many consider the greatest movie of all time. Needless to say the Academy doesn't get it right. After I watch all the movies I'm gonna see what else was nominated and put up alternatives for each year.

And I watched Cimmaron yesterday. It was pretty dull and stupid. Back then the Academy rewarded the movie that was the largest production, not exactly the best movie. Cimmaron is a shining example of this. It was tough to sit through.

I've seen each and every one of the Best Picture winners, proof positive that I need to get a life (but won't). Other major points of evidence in this regard is that I've seen every movie on the AFI list, IMDB list, every james bond movie, and every single episode of the five star trek series.

BTW, did you ever see Quiet Man, Drac? If so what did you think?

I did see The Quiet Man but it was a while back, I'd be lying if I said I remembered more than a few bits and pieces from it. I remember it had good technicolor photography (lots of green) and that John Wayne fit in better than I expected. I also remember finding the attitudes about women in it to be... old fashioned and strange and just a little disturbing.

Saving Private Ryan is a very good movie, but to me The Thin Red Line was somthing much grander, the true artisitc achievement of 1998.

I did most of that watching while I was still in school, I started watchning through the AFI list when i was twelve, then moved on to the academy awards list shortly thereafter. Now I'm working full time but still have free time every evening but still have a lot of movie time because I need to get a life.

I heavily disliked The Thin Red Line's ability to try to be more grander. I think that to me was its fault in the film. I think Sean Penn's character was brilliant and the action scenes(such as the hill climb) was awesome but the whole tree watching for 2 minutes was too much for me. Saving Private Ryan was more of an intense action movie that made me, fall more in love with the characters than a lot of movies.

I'm not the Thin Red Lines biggest fan either, but i watched it as soon as it was out on video and at that age may not have been as appreciative to films as I am now. Maybe a rewatch is in order, but not for a while i think

My lastest crack at the list after a couple months, now I only need to see...

1944 Going My Way
1937 The Life of Émile Zola
1936 The Great Ziegfeld
1932-1933 Cavalcade
1928-1929 The Broadway Melody

Just watched The life of emile zola online .It is in 17 parts but plays ok.Go on Youtube ,type in the name of the film in search.A user called elpresidente comes up ,and he has downloaded it in his blogspot which he refers to.
Hope this helps.

I only have 3 to see.Wings ,Cimarron and Cavalcade. They are all online on Youku, and i plan to watch Wings next. However the other 2 have been dubbed into Chinese.I have found subtitles for Cimarron but not Cavalcade as yet. Will probably print out the Cimarron subs and watch it like that.
To search for them put in Wings 1927-1928,Cimarron 1930-1931 and Cavalcade 1932-1933.

Just watched the first hour of Wings ,it is a good copy for a film of 80 years old.It seems to have been downloaded in 7 minute parts, and stops every 7 minutes. To get over this just forward the cursor, then go back to where you were, and it then plays ok.
Re my message on Broadway Melody of 1929.utubesucks on Youtube has this on his playlists but you will find it under t- i.e The Broadway Melody of 1929.
Also on there is The Great Ziegfeld.
Hope this helps.
