I just got done reading the book, and it was excellent, one of the best works of fiction I've ever read. I highly recommend it... It's a survival story, about a father and son. Takes place in a post-apocalyptic US. It's a stark and realistic vision of what it would be like, if nothing was left. It's not sensationalized or glamorized, like say Mad Max or something, it's much more grim. At the same time, it's a heartwarming and emotional story about surviving, doing what it takes to live to see another day.

one of the first shots from the film

Now it's being made into a movie, with a badass cast to boot. Viggo Mortenson (as the father - couldn't have been better), Robert Duvall, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron, Michael K. Williams (Omar, from The Wire)... It's direced by John Hillcoat, Australian director who did The Proposition, which is critically acclaimed.

The book is by Cormac McCarthy, the guy who wrote "No Country For Old Men", which (movie aside) is also an exceptional, best selling, novel.

Needless to say, the adaptation of NCFOM by the Coen brothers was one of their best films. McCarthy's books are such potent and detailed material, that these directors and screenwriters admittedly are highly faithful to the stories. If any of you have read NCFOM, you would know.

It's scheduled for a wide-release on November 26, 2008... #1 on my must see list right now.

By saying "movie aside" does that mean you didn't like No Country for Old Men?

No, I think that Darkrain is suggestion that the movie has its own virtue of "awesomeness" that is separate from the book's "awesomeness."

I'm planning on importing "The Proposition" from Amazon.com the first chance I get. It looked very interesting to me and worth the money.

sounds interesting. and although i haven't read the book, so i have no idea of the characters, that is an awesome cast list.

But as i said, i haven't read the book and dont know the characters. For example one of my favourite books of all time 'Yes Man' by Danny Wallace, is the funniest thing ever, and is currently being made into a Jim Carrey movie. I love JC, but he is so wrong for this role that i'm now dreading the movie!!

So do you not live in the US then? Otherwise I don't know why you'd have to import The Proposition.

From what I remember, it's primarily an Australian film, and the cheapest copies of the edition I like are in Australia. I do live in the States, and there is a U.S. edition, but I like the Aussie version more.

Are they different cuts of the film?

No - the special features are different, but more specifically they are different covers.

The first is fine, I just prefer the latter.

Can we get a mod to correct the spelling mistake in the title of this thread. It's annoying the crap outta me everytime I see it bumped to the main page. :waa:
