Some of these I've never seen.

None of those need to be remade

Wow, those look like they should be burned, not remade.

I second that thought. :) I see no reason why ANY film should be remade. We need people with fresh ideas, not losers who just rewrite old stories. I understand what the article means by refreshing old stories, but to remake an entire film character for character, story for story... It's just laziness. Complete and utter laziness.

I'm only really against remakes when the original was handled superbly. Denying bad movies a remake is like depriving ourselves of it's true potential.

Three movies I'd really like to see remade:

Master of Disguise:
This movie had all the origins and rules laid down for the character. Basically, he could transform into any person he wanted to and even take on new abilities and skills with different outfits (sort of like Kid Chameleon.) But all Dana Carvey did was use the power to act retarded and spout out potty humor every five seconds. It's the basis for a potentially entertaining goofball superhero movie shot to hell.

Last Action Hero:
It has some good premises. What if you were in your favorite movie? What if a movie character came here? But they ended up turning it into a brainless action movie both in and outside of the movie's movie world. I imagine this film actually has potential for more of a Charlie Kaufman edge to it, where they travel through more than one movie, and nothing in the real world applies to a movie formula at all (including that ridiculous roof scene at the end.)

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy:
I'd just remake it by incorporating elements from the first two books together to form the story (since that's where Douglas Adams intended it to end.) I'd probably keep the opening musical number, but I'd lose all the added fluff, including the new villain and added love interest story, and spring for some more impressive special effects when it came to infinite improbability.

Idea's like this is why Hollywood believes in allowing crap over quality. So Hitchhikers Guide wasn't the best, and Last Action Hero was just action-packed crap. BUT that doesn't give crap-writers the right to keep remaking them over and over again within the same god damn decade. I mean, seriously now. These films JUST came out in our generation. What the hell? Of course, this is my opinion on the matter, so don't go saying that I'm attacking you personally.

I never saw the point of this debate really.

Everyone is a hypocrite about this subject. One person is furious about how much he hates the fact that movies gets remade, the next second he comes out of The Manchurian Candidate and ends up loving it.

Further, who didnt love Casino Royale? Ooops. Lets hate it instead. We hate remakes!

Hell, now that we're at it, lets just hate Dawn of the Dead (2004) and Night of the Living Dead. Oh lets not forget Oceans 11. Just kill that one. The Fly? Nah, its a remake. Cronenberg should be shot and killed!

Also, the Ring, The Departed, Scarface, Cape Fear, Lord of the Flies, The Italian Job, Twelve Monkeys, True Lies, Scent of a Woman, Insomnia etc should all be undone. Right?

Take your pick.

We all love remakes. Fact. We just dont like the bad ones.

But how is that different from any other movie? Yes we want the utopia. We want only good movies. But, sorry, not gonna happen.

I'd rather have remakes and enjoy those of the above listed movies which i simply love (such as scarface, insomnia and 12 monkeys), then have none.

Of course not. I just think you're assuming I'd like to see these remade right now. Such is not the case. A movie needs at least a good 20 years for everyone to forget about. But the topic is about films that need to be remade, so I'm just tossing my picks out there.

A lot of original bad movies have potential to be better films, and that years down the road can be remade into something ten times greater - but probably won't since Hollywood doesn't remake bad movies. Instead they try to improve what's already good instead of try to fix what's broken.

I dunno. With the right writer, director, and actors, even Gigli could win an Academy Award someday.

Except for Howard the Duck, I don't know any of these.

And they shouldn't remake Howard, still the best Marvel flick ever. :P

The Final Countdown (1980)

I always enjoyed this film but I'd still like to see what they'd do with it almost 30 years later.

New air craft and perhaps a little more dabbling and interfering with the Japanese enemy. :)

Not so much remade but the one franchise I think deserves to be resolved on the big screen is the show Sliders.
I would love for a big screen adventure with the entire original, and final cast.
I loved that show, and was so let down at how Sci Fi ruined the show, and even got rid of the main leads in the show.
I wouldn't want it remade, and re started but an actual conclusion to the show would be awesome.
Maybe pick up where the last season ended, and send it off in a grand 2 hour film.

I agree. That could have potenial to make a very decent sci fi flick. :)

I started losing track of it in it's last couple years though but yeah, lots of good stories in there.

I've been hearing rumors about it since forever, but Tron was definitely released before it's time. Creating the original Tron world would be no great feat anymore (circles and cubes are literally just click-n-place,) but it'd be interesting to see if they can remake the style of the movie to match up against today's technology.

I think they buggered up what could have been some good potential there. They went off base on how it was supposed to have gone down. There was no blond alien taking him on a tour of the ship in the movie for instance. I dunno, I was pretty disappointed in this film when I saw it.

I dont remember any blonde alien from that... you sure thats the one your thinking of?

They stuck globs of goo in his mouth to make him stop screaming then came down with a huge point of a knife going in his eye.

I think they should remake "Monster Squad"

Because, it's time.

A Remake of "A nightmare on elm Street" with an entire new cast, and yes a new Fred Kruger.

I would simply call it "Elm Street" and make it an origin on how he was caught, and then have him go after Nancy...

Battlefield Earth.

Yes I've read all the horrible reviews and posts concerning this movie, I even watched it. Personally it was bad, had it's moments but honestly I've seen worse, LOTS worse. Bolero, and Tarzan the ape man (Bo Derek version) to name a couple. I also made it a point to read the book, which IMO is 1000x better than the movie. It suffered from the same curse that affected DUNE, The Stand, and Tommyknockers. Too much book to squeeze into a 2 and a half to 3 hr movie. Crucial storylines, plot development, and the entire aftermath were deleted in the movie translation. A 6-8 hr made for cable mini-series (with a decent budget) would have been MUCH better. For example it was never mentioned that our planet was heavily mortgaged with the "Galactic bank" and after terrans defeated the Psychlos the "bank" decided to foreclose. Not to mention a small armada of other alien species looking to pick up where the psychlos left off in orbit around earth. In addition to showing how humans accomplished what no other race could in over 300,000 yrs,...figuring out the base 11 mathematics scheme which was how the psychlos developed teleportation.

I would like to see Idiocracy re-made. As much as I love the original, it's just not good enough to be anything but a cult classic - but the story could carry a longer movie, and I think it would be a more successful allegory if it were given some decent actors.
