View Full Version : If You Had A Movie Theatre For 12 Hours

I saw this on another forum and thought it was interesting. If you had 12 hours from Noon to Midnight in a theatre by yourself with all of the popcorn and refreshments and what not, which films would you watch?

1. Kill Bill (4 hours and 8 minutes) (12:00 P.M. - 4:08 P.M.)
2. Jurassic Park (2 hours and 7 minutes) (4:08 P.M. - 6:15 P.M.)
3. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (2 hours and 34 minutes) (6:15 P.M. - 8:49 P.M.)
4. Alien (1 hour and 57 minutes) (8:49 P.M. - 10:46 P.M.)

Total time: 10 hours and 46 minutes out of 12 hours
Total time left over: 1 hour and 14 minutes

I couldn't find a movie that I would want to watch that was 1 hour 14 minutes or lower. So what would you all choose? I wanted to put Back to the Future and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly in there but not nearly enough time.

Why do you have to be by yourself? :(

Bring some friends, I don't care ;) Most movies are even better with a full crowd.

Jurassic Park for sure! I never got to see it in the theater. (127 min)

Jaws. I only wish it could be like the first time I saw. (130 min)

Ben Hur. Sea battles and Chariot Races on the big screen. Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. (212 min)

300. Becasue that movie begs to be watched on the big screen. (117)

The Matrix. Movie blew me away when I first saw it. (136 min)

So over by two minutes......

Hmm... let's see:

1. Raiders of the Lost Ark 115 minutes
2. Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back 124 minutes
3. Back to the Future 116 minutes
4. Serenity (I know, it's recent, but I didn't discover it until long after the DVD release) 119 minutes
5. Toy Story 81 minutes
6. X-Files: The Movie 121 minutes

Left over time, approximately 45 minutes. I'll reserve that for bathroom breaks/leg-stretching time, I'm guessing it'd be advised.

I really have no idea.
It's just that with movies I have already seen, it won't be like seeing them for the first time, and for movies I have never seen - I can never remember a good list when someone asks me :D

All 3 lord of the rings and the original Star Wars:ANH. Then if there is any time left over I would just want to watch the scene in Jurassic Park where the T-rex cuts loose.

Jaws 124 min. 12:00-2:04
The Bridge on the River Kwai 161 min. 2:04-4:45
The Wild Bunch (Director's Cut) 145 min. 4:45-7:10
Blade Runner (Director's Cut) 115 min. 7:10-9:05
Apocalypse Now (Original Cut) 153 min. 9:05-11:38

22 minutes left over

All of the films will be shown in lush 70mm prints. I tried to pick movies that would benefit from a big screen, as much as I love Citizen Kane, I don't think I'll get much out of seeing it on the big screen that I wouldn't get seeing it on DVD. I ordered the movies from lightest to darkest. Note also that I've already had the chance to see 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen, both would be included if I hadn't.

Sometimes when I watch movies on DVD, I'm always like "Hmm...I wonder how this would've felt in a movie theater". Sometimes I say "packed movie theater". I would like to see movies I only got to see on DVD with an audience. I also of course want to just see them on a BIG BIG screen. Definitely. Also, I'll put (RA) if I want a regular-sized audience, and (HA) if I want a huge audience with the viewings. And of course I'd bring all my friends and a bunch of snacks.

MY 12-HOUR MOVIE THEATER:

12:00 to 1:30 - "The Simpsons Movie" (HA). I would've loved to see it with a HUGE audience. I only got to see it the week after on a Thursday night because I was at Comic-Con the weekend the Simpsons opened. It was a decent-sized audience but not what I was hoping for. I would bring all my friends too to show them how funny it was!

1:35 to 4:00 - "TRANSFORMERS" (HA). I did see it with a huge audience. Twice. Once on July 4th and then again on July 7th with some friends. I loved it and would love to see it again on a humongous big screen. But this time, I want to bring more of my friends just to see how they react. That'd be awesome.

4:00 to 6:00 - "Collateral" - (RA). I'm actually very curious to see how this would play out to an audience. I didn't get to see it in a theater but for some reason, I would love to on a relaxing breezy afternoon/evening with an Icee. On a big screen. I think it would be enjoyable with an audience and even with some friends who haven't seen it before. I really liked this movie.

6:00 to 7:50 - "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" - (RA). I would lovveee to see this on a big screen! I love this movie. My favorite. I would also like to bring alone some friends who didn't see it. That would be great.

7:50 to 10:05 - "The Prestige" - (HA). I DID see it with a huge audience on opening night. And then I brought my brother to see a week (exactly) later. I loved the reactions people gave to some of the scenes. And I would love to bring some of my friends and see how they react to it. I wouldn't mind a huge audience. Just not overpacked and stuffy. Just simply and comfortably filled. But definitely with a lot of my friends. That'd be awesome. I love this movie.

10:05 to 12am - Well when you think about it, if you're at an Edwards or Regal, they play like...15 minutes of trailers with each movie. So 15 X 5 and you get about 75 minutes. I'd love to watch 75 minutes worth of the best of new trailers...

Haha. I'm just kidding. Ummm...maybe "Ocean's Eleven" or "Ratatouille". They both fit the running time exactly. 1 hour and 55 minutes. Or maybe the 5 best episodes of "Scrubs". I'd like to see how a big audience (with a good sense of humor) and my friends would react to some episodes of "Scrubs". Or even "The Office". Yeah, "The Office" would be great.

But yeah, those are my choices.

1: "THE SIMPSONS MOVIE"
"TRANSFORMERS"
"COLLATERAL"
"ETERNAL SUNSHINE"
"THE PRESTIGE"
"OCEAN'S ELEVEN", "RATATOUILLE", or multiple episodes of "Scrubs" and "The Office". Or hey. Maybe two or three episodes each.

:)

Look, just because I'm a movie buff doesn't mean I HAVE to love all the ''classics''. I mean seriously, you guys would really want to sit through Jurassic Park again in a movie theater? I think I say that only because my younger bro got me sick of it when we were younger. I must've seen it over 15 times. yuck

Seriously, you guys would use a big screen, big audience, etc. on stuff like Lawrence of Arabia??

And hey, that one guy put Madagascar and The Wild in his list and he didnt get picked on. At least Eternal Sunshine and Prestige are beautiful quality movies that actually move me and Sunshine is one I can truly feel and relate to.

actually, your lack of love for the 'classics' as you put it, basically takes away the whole 'movie buff' title you threw around.

You seem to think I was taking the "pretenious movie snob" attitude with you, and that's not it at all. Eternal Sunshine of the SPotles Mind is one of my favorite's too. It's just that here is a hypothetical situation where you can watch ANY movie ever made on the big screen, movies that haven't been in theaters in decades...and you picked movies where I could tell you where I was sitting in the theater at the time. Your answers aren't bad movies (not all of them ;)), they're just a waste.

Yeah. Sorry. :)

Here's what I would really wish for though: If I had a movie-themed wish, I wouldn't wish that I have a movie theater so I can REWATCH a movie I've seen before. In fact, I'd wish that I hadn't seen Eternal Sunshine for the first time on a frickin' DVD and instead see it for the FIRST time in a movie theater. Because you see, the first viewing of a movie (in a big movie theater) is always special. I'd definitely choose Eternal Sunshine as one of the movies. If I hadn't seen Jurassic Park over 15 times already, then yeah, I would choose that one too as a movie I'd see for the first time in a movie theater. And definitely Lion King. I haven't seen that in a while actually. I did see it in the movie theater as a little kid but I don't remember the experience. I was probably 4.

I still wouldn't choose Lawrence of Arabia though. I really hate to sit in a movie theater for over 3 hours. Seriously. Here's what I think...if you can't tell a movie in less than 150 minutes, then you have no business making movies.

And no, being a movie buff doesn't mean you HAVE to love movies like "2001", "Lord of the Rings", "A Clockwork Orange", etc. etc. . You could enjoy them, of course. But HAVING to love them is BS. That's what fake movie buffs do. They feel they HAVE to LOVE all the movies that critics and awards have deemed "classics". I think a movie buff is honest about what movies he really likes, loves to watch movies, talk about movies alot, knows alot about movies, and wants to make great legendary movies. Personally, I didn't think LOTR was all that great. It was enjoyable but only for like...one or two viewings in a lifetime. Sorry, I'm not an LOTR nerd. I actually think some people just like LOTR to jump on the trend and be cool like everyone else although they probably don't even watch the movies alot. Lame.

Anyway, that's what I would really wish for: wish that I could have those movies wiped from my memory and go into a theater (still at my current age) and watch them for the FIRST time, on a BIG screen. Yeah, I'd really change my choices then. "Eternal Sunshine", "Lion King", and "Jurassic Park" would be there.

I should come up with a new list if that's the case.

:)

Most of mine date a few years back.

The Iron Giant (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129167/) - 1:26
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057193/) - 3:12 (Yes 3 hours 12 minutes)
Napolean Dynamite (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0374900/) - 1:22
Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080684/) - 1:24
Jaws (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073195/) - 1:24
The Great Escape (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0057115/) - 2:12
Blazing Saddles (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071230/) - 1:33

Gotta leave the theater with a good laugh.

Edit: Tell you what, after seeing Reign Over Me this year, I would kill to find a theater around me having a Mel Brooks film festival with Silent Movie, Young Frankenstein, and Blazing Saddles.

Grindhouse (191 min) - I'm sorry. I know this is extremely new, but let's say this marathon isn't for a few years, and we never see these films released on DVD as a double feature. I, for one, would be dying to see the original version of this film in theaters again.

Young Frankenstein (106 min) - We follow this with one of the greatest comedies of all time, just in case some audience members didn't dig Tarantino's shortened Death Proof, and are checking their watches.

North By Northwest (136 min) - This brings us to what is arguably Hitchcock's most entertaining film, and beautifully shot.

2001: A Space Oddyssey (141 min) - Because we all need our minds blown sometimes, and this one does it so damn well. It's also quite the looker.

Back to the Future (116 min) - And now I have a feeling we'd be ready for some good old fashioned time travel with Doc and Marty.

And then we'll just show the newest episode of the coolest half-hour show on TV at the time (Remember, I'm setting this marathon in the future).

Children Of Men: 4:20 - 6:10

A Clockwork Orange: 9:30 - 11:50

Well.... The Star Wars Geek in me says all 6 Star Wars Movies (which would run over the 12 hours)

The LOTR geek in me says all 3 extended LOTR movies (which would run well over the 12 hours.... not to mention except that ROTK was the unextended edition I did this)
