What the hell is up with these comertials and posters and trailers that say somthing like "coming 7/4/2007 only in theaters"
Who is this informing? Does anyone actually think these brand new major theatrical blockbusters are gong to be on video anytime soon or what?
Does anyone know why these ads keep saying this?

Because not everyone is totally informed about movies constantly like us. Heck, I avidly visit movie sites and forums and there's still a movie now and again that I'll see an ad for that I've never heard of. But the point is, if they didn't say it, some people wouldn't know if it was a movie coming to theatres, or if it was a movie coming to DVD.
Yeah, the word "only" part probably isn't needed, but who really cares whether or not they say "Coming to theatres this July" or "Coming only to theatres this July"? Either way, it gets the message out.

Pyschologicaly, it probably helps to get people to see it in theaters before it comes out on video. Everything goes back to "more money".

Probably to try and get people to go and watch their movies at the cinema. Crazy! ;)

I think it would be wonderful if we could also get them to go back to the old trailers where words splashed across the screen such as " a cast of thousands", "a monumental achievement", "now for the first time", "fury, passion, SEX, and then some"....etc etc.etc....

Whats even more stupid is the super quick flash at the end of every TV spot with 3 pages of credits. Its like 1 seconds devided by 3...
I read somewhere (maybe boxofficemojo?) that only about one THIRD of the American population (or maybe it was half) goes to the movie theater each year. So, it's not like everyone who reads movie posters and such will get it.
Besides, with video game ads, TV movies, and with legal downloads of movies, I mean, the whole "only in theaters" thing is important that way too.
Where's my elephant?

This reminds me of those "only on Showtime" commercials back in the late 80s and early 90s with that "Here you see it. There (HBO) you don't." slogan since they shared some first run movies from a few studios then.

I would like it better if it just said the date.
