I always thought it was funny how the Lord of the Rings ratings always mentioned "Intense Epic Battles". I understand why its there but...how can something be so epic that it effects the rating? ;)

When Harry Met Sally - R (no explanation!)

From MPAA:

An R-rated motion picture, in the view of the Rating Board, contains some adult material. An R-rated motion picture may include adult themes, adult activity, hard language, intense or persistent violence, sexually-oriented nudity, drug abuse or other elements, so that parents are counseled to take this rating very seriously. Children under 17 are not allowed to attend R-rated motion pictures unaccompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Parents are strongly urged to find out more about R-rated motion pictures in determining their suitability for their children. Generally, it is not appropriate for parents to bring their young children with them to R-rated motion pictures.

I love the ratings here. Here they rate the overall movie and how it can affect people. Not single scenes or single things in the movie. The MPAA system is a downright stupid rating system.

Speaking of MPAA...are they afraid to give a movie a rating of R now? I dont see alot of rated R movies anymore. When I was a kid thats all that came out and I couldn't go to the movies to see them. Now everything violent is PG-13 while romance chick flick stuff is rated R..what the hell?

No, they just didn't have to mention it in the NC-17 rating of it because the gore isn't what made it that way.

The MPAA isn't what changed, Hollywood did. About ten years ago they realized there was more money in PG-13 movies. So they've been toning down a lot of their action movies to get that kind of rating. For example Die Hard 1 was filled with strong violence and swearing whereas Live Free or Die Hard had tamer violence and no "Mother****ers".
