Ok I had to make a thread about this. I cannot believe that Jurassic Park, one of the best films of the 90's is not in the top 250 but the first Pirates of the Caribbean, The Prestige, Snatch, The Terminator, Cinderella Man, and many other sup-par films are in it. So many other films deserve to be in there and those films get put in. I know it's a user based voting and ranking system but this is just ridiculous. Just thought I'd blow off some steam here.

As much as I love Jurassic Park, I find my reasons for liking it resulting from my love of dinosaurs and CGI-animation (well, I love CGI in most cases). While I think it should be in the top 250 because of nostalgia, I'm not sure it deserves to be in the top 250 because of its acting and/or plot (is it creative? yes. but without the likes of Spielberg's directing talents and Neill's character of Alan Grant, it would have been just like a dozen other B-rated monster flicks).
Despite my criticism, Jurassic Park is probably in my top 25 all-time. I just have some problems with it.

What's wrong with Terminator?

Compared to some of the films that aren't on the list it shouldn't be on there.

Like you said, it's a voter based system. Return of the King is #4, that should already tell you something about the lack of credibility this list already has. Sure you can say "well it's more accurate because everyone can vote." Well, that's exactly why it's not accurate, because you're having every 13 year old Matrix fan voting 10s on Sin City and Equilibrium and a 1 on Dr. Strangelove because they "didn't think it was funny." Yeah, I started laughing at the IMDB list by the time I got to #20. Although I'm no fan of the AFI by any means, their Top 100 list from a few years back is a much stronger list to pick and choose from.

Just seems like an odd choice when The Return of the King (#4) and Sin City (#67) are so much higher. ;)
Out of curiousity, does it bother you that "Terminator 2" is on the list about 50 places higher?

I dig the fact that T2 is on the list, I think it's one of the best, if not the best, sci-fi/action movies of the last 15 years.
And Sin City at #67? I prove my point.

Sorry, I was asking iv3rdawg. I hadn't seen your post yet.
But I'm glad you think so. ;)

The problem with the IMDb TOP 250 isn't that 13-year-olds are voting 10s for Matrix and 1 for Dr. Strangelove. The problem is that it depends on how many people have actually seen the film and/or how recent someone has seen a film. Thats why you have Return of the King at #4.
Like a good example is with a poll they had recently. They asked users which was their favorite Bond film. Guess what #1 was! That's right...it was Casino Royale! Any real Bond fan would know that calling Casino Royale the best is nonsense! You can definitly says its top 5, but #1 is nonsense. But why was it #1? Well...because since the movie was released a month ago most people have probably seen that then Goldfinger which was released in 1964!

Nope. Like Dooms said Terminator 2 is a great sci-fi and action film. It deserves to be up there.

Much more important than how many people have seen recently is how many INTERNET USERS have seen it. How many 60 year olds who were there to see Goldfinger have accounts on IMDB you think? It would mostly depend on the younger users who watch old movies.
Personally, I think the imdb list is pretty good, considering. And it's not like a movie with 50 "10" votes can get on the top, they have a complicated equation for how to list them which tries to be as fair as possible. But with the sheer numbers of something like LOTR, what can they do? It's still an internet poll.

definately good posts on the subject have been made since the thread starters.. IMdB in general is a decent place to start when looking at movies.. but by no means completely accurate.. really in fact no place is, I think IMDB is better than say getting leonard Maltins book, one persons opinion on am ovie is the worst thing you should do.. even a place like Rottentomatoes isn't anything more than a more snobbish version of IMDB. IMDB is made up of people who are on this message board basically.. people who love movies, and watch a lot them, but also have internet access, and time..
and Snatch, The Terminator, Cinderella Man are all great movies.. and I would put on the list way before Jurassic Park. While I loved Jurassic park the first two times I saw it, it really gets old real fast. and that was back when the technology was still state of the art, its nothing more than a high budget action flick. Spielberg has made many movies better than Jurassic Park.

How come no one has pointed out the biggest fallacy of this thread? This man calling Prestige a sub par film!

I understand what you're saying. But there were greater injustices on the IMDB 250. And you're right, those films don't deserve to be in the top 250. But neither does Jurassic Park.

Well, that's pretty much why it does deserve to be in top 250. It might not be high art, but it's well written, well acted, has some AWESOME dialogue, and is incredibly well cast (Neill, Goldblum, Attenborough etc. perfect.) All that added to the fact that the effects and action are some of the best ever put to film, I'd say it easily warrants being in the top 100 at the least.

Disagree for the win.

No, it's not high art. And in my opinion, it's not terribly well-written nor well acted (like I said, aside from Neill's character). And I don't know about the term "awesome dialogue." If you like quotes like "Hold on to your butts," then neat-o. As I said, I do think Jurassic Park should be in the top 250 purely out of nostalgia. I feel there are a lot of films that should be in the top 250 (Superman: The Movie), but none of them ever will be.
Just because Spielberg was involved doesn't necessarily make it a great flick. It just stands to have a higher chance of being better than most other monster/action movies.
