Do forgive me is i don't put in your favorite director for there os so many but so few spaces. I will select 19 directors and a other selection for i am bound to miss someones favorite director. I will mix old and new selections.
Just to be fare to both modern and old hollywood eras.
Do give me a few moments to post the poll.

Gotta go with Spielberg. He has just made too many classics for him not to be my favorite director. In a close second though is Tarantino.

Gotta say Spielberg, because he has directed so many great films including the film I thought was last year's best, "Munich".

John Ford, if you haven't seen any of his movies then do so now. If you don't know who he is, please say so that I may ban you asap. Orson Welles was once asked whom he thought were the top 3 directors in the game, and he replied "John Ford, John Ford, and John Ford."

I voted Ridley Scott because he's my favorite and because he done so many different kind films.

I love Ray Harryhausen and pleased to him recognized ...but I don't know if he truely counts as a director. Cinemtographer and puppeteer abolsutely.....

David Lynch ftw

Agree on Kubrick.

I'm amazed (and some what sickened) that Roland Emmerich would even be mentioned in the same poll as Alfred Hitchock!

I'm not a Kubrick fan. I think 2001:A Space Odyssy is overrated.

Although I personally don't like some of his movies, I have to go with Speilberg for his commercial success and his industry acclaim. My personal favorite is Ridley Scott.

lol@you

Who Shouldn't Be on this list:

George Lucas - American Graffiti and Star Wars(ep IV), and thats it
Peter Jackson - LOTR's and thats it
Roland Emmerich - lol, huge Joke
Kevin Reynolds - just as bad as Roland Emmerich, if not worse
Ray Harryhausen - more of a producer directed very little

Questionable calls:

Christopher Nolan - does he really have the body of work to make the list
Sam Raimi - you take away his two Trilogy's and what have you got, A Simple Plan was good, but For the Love of the Game? The Quick and the Dead? Darkman?

I will also throw in there, Oliver Stone, Michael Mann, and Ridley Scott are good directors, but not really in the same class as the other guys I haven't mentioned

oh and did i mention, No Stanley Kubrick

some guys I would put on the list:

Ingmar Bergman
Orson Wells
David Lean
Billy Wilder
Roman Polanski
Woody Allen

hell I would put guys like these over Lucas, Jackson, Emmerich, Reynolds, and Harryhausen:

David Lynch
Joel Coen
Quintin Tarantino
Milos Forman
Kevin Smith
Ron Howard
James Cameron
Sidney Lument
Richard Linklater
Wes Anderson
Paul Thomas Anderson
Tim Burton
Terry Gilliam

How about

Sergio Leone
David Fincher
David Cronenberg
Sam Peckinpah
John Frankenheimer
Frank Darabont (sure he's done only 3 movies but his films are amazing)
Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous enough said)
Sidney Pollack
Taylor Hackford
Spike Lee
Mel Brooks
Harold Ramis
Barry Sonnenfeld
Ivan Reitman

George Lucas, Peter Jackson and Roland Emmerich should be removed from that list. Agreed on Kubrick indeed.

I agree Kubrick and Lynch should be added. But all of those directors are so different, it seems almost impossible to say who is better.

Another director who really should be considered.

Akira Kurosawa

After all the Hidden Fortress was a big influence on Star Wars.

Out of that list, Steven Spielberg simply because he's directed some of the greatest and most memorable movies ever made.

(i.e Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, E.T., Schindler's List, Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, Minority Report)

But if Tarantino was on there I would've voted him.
