I want to see "The Departed" and I'm 16 years old. Now, I have seen my share of R-rated films, but it's just that this is R for "Strong Brutal Violence, Pervasive Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Drug Material". I've seen plenty of violence and hear enough language in the halls at school. But anyway, due to the fact that I enjoy these types of smart films on a normal basis, do you think the content in "The Departed" is too questionable for anyone under 17?
I ask just out of curiousity.

I personally think a 16 year old is old enough for just about anything. Go ahead. If you're familiar with other Scorsese films like Goodfellas, Casino, and Taxi Driver you should be fine. Those are all about as violent as The Departed.

I'm 16 and I watched it with my brother and my mom. It was fine. No nudity, just profanity and violence. That's about it. Not as much violence as language though. There is A LOT of profanity. I've also seen a lot worse films so maybe that's why it didn't seem as bad.

There was "Strong Sexual Content" in The Departed? I don't remember that...

I think its refering to the scene where Billy and Madolyn are kissing and Billy starts taking off her pants. Even though we don't really see anything.

That doesn't constitute for "Strong Sexual Content" though, for that rating there has to be some heavy duty stuff. I pay attention to this kind of thing. ;)

Maybe it was Frank's dildo. ;) or that whole porn scene j/k
But I'm with you, there was no "strong" sexual content in The Departed. If this was strong.. then well other movies must be considered porn material.

The MPAA always seems to do this kind of stuff. They also (a lot of the time) say "sexual content" a lot of the time for films that actually have nudity in them and leave out the "nudity" part. The Last King of Scotland being an example for that.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm fairly positive I'll be seeing "The Departed" Monday afternoon, I can't wait.

I bet it was the dildo that did it. You know the MPAA and their standards. Certain "keywords" in a movie make them get all hot and bothered, pun intended. It's like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang when Val Kilmer builds up to the derogatory word of the female body part(can't say it since it's censored even here lol) and finally just says it. MPAA cringes at certain words. Implications and showing/saying it are two different things with those numbskulls.

I got back from seeing this a while ago, and I absolutely loved it! Best movie I've seen all year! Although the language was a bit out of control, I didn't notice it after a while. Anyway, teriffic film.
