When Darth Vader strikes down Obi-Wan, do you think Vader has actually killed him, or has Obi-Wan "hit the eject button", so to speak, and voluntarily merged into the netherworld of the force? Seems to make more and more sense to me that Obi-Wan learned how to become one with the force during his years in hiding on Tatooine. Either that, or GL couldn't show a body get cut in half out of fear of losing a PG rating???

I would think it was both really. Obi-Wan pretty much died, but by doing so, he became one with the force.

Yoda would have done the same when he died. You all saw how he disappeared right? Pretty much like Obi Wan.

Obi-Wan disappears a second before Vader's blade strikes him. He chooses to depart and become one with the Force, rather than have Vader feel like he has won completely.

I always thought the heat from Vader's saber evaporated him? ;)

I always thought he disappeared just so he wouldn't have to repay the five bucks that Anakin lent him waaaay back in the Clone Wars. In fact, there was a line that was cut out, just as Vader struck him down. Obi-Wan said, "Lets see you get your money now, *****!" ;)

has anyone seen the doc. that came with the OT Trilogy dvd set? Empire of Dreams. they show clips of some of the original (pre-special edition) and it does actually show a body getting cut in half. But in the actual movie it shows him disappearing. Anyone else notice this?

I've heard some people say that he was looking for his lightsaber.

i've always wondered why he did that...I mean shouldn't he KNOW that Jedi's evaporate into thin air?

But I like todd philip's theory...now I have a logical reason when I see the movie in the future

:D

You have to wonder how Obi-Wan practiced for that moment...you can only do it once.

What do you mean "shouldn't he know that Jedis evaporate into thin air" Name one Jedi in the PT that evaporated? none of them. Qui gon taught Yoda and Obi-wan how to do it, and they are the only 2 surviving Jedi, so when Obi-wan sacrificed himself to the force, Vader was surprised because he'd never seen that before. I'm sure he was also kinda worried based on the "if you strike me down I will become more powerful then you could imagine" line that Obiwan delivered before he died. I would be worried too, if someone threatened me like that, and then just dissapeared into thin air which has never been done before.

I think when Vader cuts him down and he stands there and looks at the pile of clothes like "WTF???" - that says a lot.

Either he:
A) thought "damn, now when Obi-wan visits me as a spirit, he's going to be naked because he left his clothes behind; or
B) He was admiring the Armani throwback design of his robes.

Personally, I think Vader just gets a little tired of wearing the same thing all the time. Think about this - how stinky must his mask be? I mean, it's not like he can readily brush his teeth anytime he wants, and he doesn't have another helmet when that one reeks like total s**t.

Sorry, I didn't put two and two together.
I assumed when a Jedi is taught everything about the force...he knows EVERYTHING...not a few details passed here and there amongst 2-3 Jedi's.

Guess I better watch those movies a bit closer.

Then why doesn't Qui Gon evaporate when he dies? He is cremated on a funeral pyre.

Because he was killed by Darth Maul .You can't just get hit witha lightsaber and dissapear and become one with the force. It takes years to learn this skill. Did you not watch ROTS. Yoda tells Obi-wan that he has training for him while he watches over Luke, and tells him that Qui-Gon has learned how to become one witht he force, and tells Obi-wan he will teach him how to talk to Qui-Gon and learn how to become one with the force.

a) Plot hole... SW is full of them

b) He knew before he died... and kept his "spirit" together after he died. At that point he was able to learn more like how to talk to living people. It probobly took him several years to learn to comunicate with the living. After that he was able to talk with Yoda and Obi-wan. Each of them surpassed Qui-gon in their abilities and were able to merge with the force before physical death.

In terms of Obi and Vader, in the video game, there's a bonus level in which you run around as Vader and you get to beat ole Ben's butt. The thing is, he's as hard to beat as a 70 year old as he is when you battle him as a 30-is year old in RotS...

I saw ROTS. But if he did get hit with a lightsaber and died then how did he become one with the force?
