View Full Version : Question about ANH...

At the beginning of A New Hope on the ship, C3PO tells R2 that the Princess will not escape this time, referring to the situation taking place. However, when he is with Luke and the message from Leia is found, Luke asks 3PO who she is and he responds "I'm not sure. Someone of importance I believe" and acts completely clueless about the situation. I'm still unclear on this. Was he purposely hiding what he knew from Luke. Obviously droids soak up information in enormous amounts, so much so that their memories must be wiped. Was there a purpose for 3PO's change in character or was it simply a mistake in the film? Or am i just an idiot? Probably ...i dunno. Can some1 clue me in?

You're not an idiot, this is yet another plot hole courtesy of George Lucas that we're all supposed to overlook.

Being a protocal droid C3PO probobly is programed to serve his present master... Which at that point is Luke and Owen... anything left over from his previous mast is irrelevent.
I'm not even sure if C3PO has ever met the Princess.

well he belonged to owen and beru for awhile before. But he wasn't like "who are you?" when anakin came by.

That doesn't make sense. One minute he clearly knows who the princess is, next he doesn't, plain and simple. He doesn't "forget" just because he's been sold.
Furthermore, being a protocol droid belonging to Captain Antilles, he probably would have served the princess whenever she was onboard.
It's just like Owen and Beru not remembering C-3PO in ANH. It doesn't make sense, it's a plot hole.

I never said that C3PO didn't remember who the princess was.... just that it no longer mattered... he was there to serve Owen.

Okay....well that brings us back to the basis of this thread. Why, when one of his masters (Luke) asks him who the princess is, does he tell him he's not sure? A protocol droid doesn't decide what is and isn't important for his master to know, then lie to that effect. That makes even less sense.
Why can't you just accept that it's a plot hole? It's not the only one, you know...

I think he just knew of the Princess, that she has had close calls before no real relationship between them. He just knows she's important or perhaps he's never seen the Princess and didn't know what she looked like.
Haven't seen ANH in awhile, might be a scene where they're together on the Falcon.

Yeah, but that's like knowing the president. You know what he looks like, and you'd be able to identify an image of him, even if you've never met him.
Even then, I find it hard to believe that on a small ship like that 3PO would never have even run into the princess.
But like I said in my last post, they probably would have met, since 3PO was the captain's protocol droid.
I don't see what's so hard about this. The simplest explanation is that it's simply an error. Lucas did NOT sit down and think this out, and I wouldn't expect him to, it's so minor. "Now let me think, 3PO might not have actually SEEN the princess, but he knows of her...maybe he can't recognize her because he's forgotten about her since he's owned by Owen now." Why are you guys going to these lengths to try and justify some reasoning behind this?

I just realized something R2 could have been beebing messages at her for fun, like so.
Leia:R2 go down to the hangar bay....
R2:beeb bob beeb beeb bob (vader is your father)
Leia: and take this to general....
R2: you have a brother named luke on tatooine.

Well 3PO DEFINATELY saw the princess. Before seeing her programming a message to R2, he acknowleges her which seems strange. He obviously knew what was going on because when the battle was taking place he spoke of her as if he knew the purpose of this battle was to capture her. "She won't escape this time!" only cloud buster seems to get it. guess ur right, its a plot hole. thanx for clearing that up. i never noticed it until earlier today.

Well they belonged to the captain of the ship at the time and the ship obviously carries the princess around the galaxy and get in some trouble from time to time but manages to scrap by most times.
he prolly know of her but notabout the intricate details of her

They barely ever saw C3PO, not to mention there are many robots that are the same shape as him. He even ran into one of the same color on Cloud City

I agree that there are tons of plot holes... I just don't think this is one of them. To me it seems more like it was pourposely done... maybe something more likehe didn't want to get involved... which seems a bit more plausible.

Yeah If I remember correctly, he didn't even have his outer covering on - Anakin was still building him - plus then I believe he got a silver covering - the gold was later.
Yeah Droids have a certain number of "personality programs" but the various types look very similar and there are thousands the people in those worlds must come into contact with on a yearly basis - to them they are just tools.

You're right, I never noticed that plot hole before. You can read the whole script here:

so I looked it up and you're right, he does say that. The only logical explanation is that it's a plot hole I think.

C-3Po knows how the princess is, but I think the problem is that he did not recognize her because she had her hood on so no one would see her. Notice after she programs the message to R2, she takes off her hood.
Chiakier
05-23-2005, 11:56 AM
Irekon he knew the princess Leia was on the ship but hasnt seen her in person so thats why he said she wont escape and why he didnt recognise her on the hologram

Or the fact she was wearing a hood?

i'm assuming he knew who she was, but didn't want to disclose that kind of information..... due to former programming.. cause doesn't he say that R2 is playing the wrong message?? i could be mistaken

Either he chose not to disclose the information on her, or he didn't know what she looked like, but was aware that the princess was on board the ship.
One or the other. More likely a mistake, but you kind of have to fill in the blank with one of those two.
One other possibility I guess is that he didn't notice who it was from the holographic image....
I don't know. I don't care.

Uh, regarding Owen and Beru not remembering C-3PO......unless you want Lucas to go back and change ANH some more, that's not a plot hole - the storyline of Anakin building 3PO came about afterwards so of course there was no mention of it in ANH

In that case, it would've made a lot more sense had he written the prequels to go along with the OT, instead of writing the prequels any damn way he wanted and then having to go back and either fix, or totally ignore the plot holes he created because of it. ;)

Exactly, C3PO and R2D2 had no place in the PT. (Neither did Chewbacca, if you watch the movies in order you're like...how (or why) the hell did that one wookie end up with this Han Solo guy?)

Well, in defense of the C-3PO/Lars situation; keep in mind that there are dozens of droids with the same coverings as C-3PO. There's one behind him on the Corvette in the beginning of ANH, theres one in Cloud City in ESB, there's one on the Federation ship in TPM, and I think there may have been one in the other two prequels also. Either way; it's the most common droid that we've seen in the series, so it's no wonder Owen doesn't pay it any attention.
Fanible
05-23-2005, 09:13 PM
The Wookies, and especially Chewbacca were the dumbest addition in the PTs. Maybe just the Wookies (although they were still pointless), but it's totally dumb that Chewbacca was there. I liked him just being some random alien pirate, just like Han Solo was just some random human pirate (no real emphasise on 'pirate', but you get what I mean).

But...there's no situation. Anakin building 3PO was not a storyline when ANH was made - there's no reason for him to pay him any attention.

The wookies were definitely unnecessary. They looked cool in the previews, but they were so insignificant in the movie.

Anakin only met them for a few brief moments in AOTC. That's the only time they meet. Owen must have heard what happened to him and feared the same would happen to luke, but they never saw him again after he left Tattoine. Am I missing your point?

If Lucas is who I think he is, Kashyyyk was really just an advert for:
1) Clone Wars Volume III - Kashyyyk is actively involved in the Clone Wars so we'll see it for certain.
2) Rage of the Wookiees - SW Galaxies expansion pack
3) Battlefronts II
4) SW Live Action TV Series - Tarful is not a main character, so perhaps he'll be involved in the TV series, thus so is Kashyyyk. Lucas didn't end up using the Wookiees-in-chains footage filmed, so Kashyyyk is still active post-ROTS
flukeman
05-23-2005, 09:24 PM
drjones, my point is that the Anakin building 3PO/Anakin meeting the Lars storyline in the PT has no bearing on ANH because ANH was filmed before the PT so there's no reason to justify it not being included. Is that making sense? Just think about it chronologically from the filming point of view.

That's stupid. This is the big movie into which $150 Million was poured. The big shots are in this film. It isn't a commercial for everything else -- everything else is a commercial for IT.
