If I had any idea I'd tell you...

Moe Szyslak
02-08-2002, 10:31 PM
It's a unique identifier to your computer. A host(say a cable company that sells packages) is alloted a certain amount of IP numbers to distribute among its customers. Since they are givin a certain amount this numbers are sequential and are really close in appearance.

Knerys
02-08-2002, 10:34 PM
So the closer you are, the more similar the number.

Moe Szyslak
02-08-2002, 10:36 PM
Pretty much, yeah. It's very similar to the addresses of homes.

Kyle Katarn
02-08-2002, 10:38 PM
So in other words, me and Elisabeth (same county) should be close. How do you find them out? And how dangerous is it for others to know them???

tyler_durden
02-08-2002, 10:39 PM
So basically it is a way that you can identify someone's computer when they are online. Interesting....thanks Moe.

Security VS. Freedom... a classic conflict. It would make an interesting discussion.

bbf2
02-11-2002, 10:52 PM
I'm kind of in the middle . . . where I have no option but to live with my parents. I would definately prefer freedom, but once I have it I'll probably look back and desire some sense of security.

I'd like to not have to decide when to go places, where to go, when to eat, etc. but I also do not enjoy the idea of having to mess with taxes and the stock market and money management.

tyler_durden
02-11-2002, 11:00 PM
Now I would argue that security isn't real no matter where you are or who you are living with. Something could happen (hopefully it won't, but you never know) whether or not you are living with your parents. I know you live in the Midwest Olorin, so during the summertime there are all sorts of tornados around here. There could be a house fire. You could be robbed, you actually probably have a higher chance then me since you do have all those valuables laying around. So how secure are you, or any of us? Personally, I think that makes independence all the more important. If I can't have true security, then I definitely want independence. :o :D

And just so everyone knows, while I love my parents dearly, I would NEVER give up what I have now, to move back in with them. Well, I have turned this into a serious debate, so I will shut up now.... :p

bbf2
02-11-2002, 11:05 PM
Obviously accidents can happen to anyone. The security here is talking about not having to worry much about financial future or paying, etc.

tyler_durden
02-11-2002, 11:12 PM
Ahhh...but what if (and I really hope that this never happens to any of you) one or both of the parents die. One of them gets laid off or fired. There are still factors there that would wind up affecting your security. I know it is unlikely and all, but I am trying to play devil's advocate.

bbf2
02-11-2002, 11:19 PM

Right now I am reflecting on the last few posts. I have finished my homework (an hour past my self-appointed deadline) and am about to play a little PS2. As for the current conversation that seems to be arising in this thread, well, I, too, happen to know the feeling of true independence. Both of my parents have passed away (my dad when I was younger, and my mom in recent years), and everything that happens in my life now happens because that is the way I want it. I have almost everything I want (material-wise): a computer, PS2, Dreamcast, new car, $1300 apartment (with roommate, of course), crapload of movies, bass guitar, Bose system, $40,000+ a year job. Am I bragging? Sure I am, I'm proud of my acquisitions in life. I'm proud of the fact that I have $hitloads of homework due for classes that are squeezed into the cracks of my 40+ hour workweeks. I'm proud that I can crank my heater all the way up so that when its cold as hell outside, I'm actually starting to break a sweat by just sitting inside while wearing shorts and a t-shirt. I love my independence, but I would give it all up just to spend one more, just one more, minute with my mom, or at least just to let her know I'm doing good. Who's to say who is truly priviliaged? The one who is independent? Or the one who is on the pathway to independence? Material things don't make me happy, and they definitly don't define me as a character. What makes me happy is knowing that my family and friends are there for me if I do need them, as well as I for them, that one day I will finally get the degree I hope for and actually do what I really want to do in life, and seeing my loved ones happy. We all have our stations in life, wether out of priviliage or necessity, it is up to us to make the most of where we are.

*BTW, I know I pretty much babbled through this, but I did have a caramel frap with a shot of espresso, and I'm still wired as hell from it, so whatever.

Right now my fingers are very cold, which makes it harder to type. I'm also being a little bit festive for Mardi Gras. I guess this comes from taking 3 years of French in high school. Merci, Mme. Nance! :)

Currently, I am installing Default Domain (security) Policies for Windows 2000 Active Directory. (in our test environment)

Exciting huh?

How many here actually have a clue as to what that is?

Nilade, just so you know, if I were in your situation I would feel the same way. All I was saying is that I would not give up my life (my material possesions don't matter to me, I mean my wife, job, friends, etc.) to go back to living with my parents. I am too much of a free spirit for my parents to handle. I can barely stay with them one weekend anymore. But I love them dearly and want them to be around for as long as possible. My only point that I was making is that there is no true security in an insecure world. But thanks for sharing your story. :)

In reply to Nilades post...
I am happy with my life, I just need to reduce debt...
I have a new wife, a new computer, two cars, a 2000 sq foot townhome, and a nice paying job (not going to give the salary, because someone may actually read it).

But I want more. But I need to pay off debts first, so, no going to Vegas this year....
