Out of the three movies that won 11 Academy Awards, which one do you all like the best? The Return of the King, Ben Hur, or Titanic?

To me, the best is Ben Hur.

I haven't seen Ben Hur so I'll abstain from voting.

What's so good about it? Beside special effects, and other techical stuff.

What's so good about it? Beside special effects, and other techical stuff.

It's a classic grand ol' Hollywood epic that has likable characters who have good chemistry and is very well directed.

The only reasons people hate it is because it sits atop the all time World Box office holdings and their favorite movie doesn't, and it won a crap load of Oscars and their favorite films of 97 didn't. It's class envy. They're so blinded by their hate of it's success that they can't really see that it's not a bad movie at all.

Oh please. Why there has to be hate involved? Can't people just dislike it because in their opinion it's not good, not because it won so many Oscars and their favourite didn't? Personally, I don't care what movie wins an Oscar.

Return of the King. Before you rip me apart: Titanic sucked all ass, and I haven't seen all of Ben-Hur. So ROTK wins by default.

The only reason Ben-Hur isn't kicking the crap out of ROTK is because no one's seen it. Without a doubt, Ben-Hur is by far the superior of the 3 movies. ROTK and Titanic were awarded because of the hype.

If you haven't seen Ben-Hur, I strongly, STRONGLY recommend it.

I know, not a lot of people have 3 1/2 hours to kill watching a movie on tv. But when you watch it, you'll reconsider your vote.

On the one hand, you have Ben-Hur and some of the most classic scenes ever filmed. The charoit race, "RAMMING SPEED," etc....

And then you have.......the other two.

I find it funny, it's not really a topic for debate.

ROTK. I haven't seen Ben Hur, but even if it is great, ROTK is my favorite and I doubt Ben Hur is going to pass it up.
I used to hate Titanic, I guess because of the hype, because I liked all the other nominees of that year so much more, and because the love story part feels contrived. But I watched it again this week, and the part where the ship goes down is awesome enough for me to at least not hate it. All the work put into the set and costumes is impressive, too.
But it's no equal to ROTK or any of the other LOTR films, IMO.

I picked ROTK, and yes I have seen all three movies and yes I think all three were good however, Titanic although good should not even be considered, and Ben-Hur was an excellent film...........If you are into films of yesteryear...........which I am not, so I picked ROTK. The only reason ROTK is overhyped is because it was that damn good, and even then it didn't come close to how overly overhyped Titanic was.

ROTK gets my vote, this is unusual for me since I'm usuall one of the boards lee enthusiastic LOTR fans and I usually champion older movies. But I really don't like Ben-Hur very much, it's over long, has a bunch of needless subplots, and just very lame pacing (although it does have a few VERY good action pieces.) As for Titanic, I basicly agree with Mat, peoples preceptions of that movie are really skewed, it's basicly one of the most under rated and over rated movies at the same time.

Trust me, you missed A LOT in ROTK. I definetly think its the best of the three. Go see it, i guarantee you will love it.

I think im alone when i say this. I think the reason why ROTK got all the hype and the oscars was because of all the work PJ put into the trilogy. Meaning, he didnt get it just for ROTK, it was kind of a tribute to the trilogy.

I've seen ROTK and Titanic. Out of those two, I like ROTK much more. But I don't think it deserved 11 Oscars. (Out of the LOTR trilogy, it was FOTR that deserved the highest honor.)

Haven't seen Ben Hur yet. I've seen snippets of the chariot race, but that's it. It always makes me nervous watching and thinking how they filmed the race with horses in such close proximity, crashing and falling *shudders*

ROTK waws superior to any film of the last 30 years in my opinion. Ben-Hur, like ROTK was a big budget movie of its time. ROTK is simply better, the acting in ROTK is always good while in Ben Hur it is hit and miss, where only the leads give good performances. Titanic is definitely not even within striking distance of the other two.

Actually, the story (if it can be called that) in Titanic was a pretty run of the mill and contrived romance that happens to take place on a ship that sinks.

Return of the King is a rich story from a richly detailed trilogy of books written by a great scholar of language and man of imagination.

Ben Hur is one of the greatest of all history based epic movies, and will still be considered a marvel of film making for many years to come.

That's the EXACT reason I don't like that movie. I would have probably liked it if there wasn't a stupid romantic plot. The directing/cinematography was great, I thought. The ship sinking scene was very well done in terms of special effects. But the story of Jack and Rose pissed me off. It was so sappy and typical. Upper class girl (with, of course, a "mean" fiancee) meets "wild" lower class boy. They fall in love. Girl CHEATS on her fiancee. "I love you" is said way too many times. Jack's death was retarded. Seriously. Horrible scene. I don't even know why I'm putting this in spoilers, it wasn't unexpected at all. Not to mention one of the most irritating songs I've ever heard. THAT WON AN OSCAR? Martin Scorsese is Oscar-less and Celine Dion has one? That's unbelievable. I can understand it getting special effects/cinematography Oscars. But Best Picture of the year and 10 others? I don't think it deserved that many.

My only problem with Ben Hur is Charleton Heston. That man cannot act. If you watch the movie again, notice how "friendly" Messala is to Ben Hur. Stephen Boyd purposely played the role that way and 'ol Charleton never caught on. William Wyler, the director, was in on it too.

Well, doomsday and all the rest of you so called "movie experts" can ***** about it all you want. Grow up.

I've seen Ben Hur and though it was a good movie I often found myself borred durring the movie. So god damn slow..... But thats me. doesnt make me worse then you.

Titanic was good too.

WTF? I never said I was *****ing about anything. I was simply saying that had more people seen Ben-Hur (and hardly anyone has, look at the previous posts) then the vote would be closer. I don't see why LOTR fans get so defensive when it comes to this sort of thing.

As for me being a "movie expert" I'm sure there are plenty of people on these boards who have seen more movies than I have, but I at least know enough about movies to know that you don't judge a movies "greatness" on how many Academy Awards it has (a habit most commonly found in LOTR fans). They're all good movies, I'm just saying that people shouldn't vote if they haven't seen Ben-Hur, because I'm sure many people would vote for that over ROTK had they seen it (mostly people who don't get "bored" when watching movies that don't have millions of dollars in CGI).

Relax.

Andrey83
11-25-2004, 03:00 PM
"i dont see why lotr fans get so defensive"

Think before you speak. What was it you just got? defensive. Right when your favorite movie (or whatver) doesnt get the vote - you jump right into defense and says "if more people had seen it then it would have gotten more votes" etc.... I dont know, but you are the one getting defensive here...

And i dont actually need to relax, because i'm totally relaxed as we speak. I just think that you should accept that not everyone likes the old classics that you praise so highly. That there is another world beyond yours...

you know?

Doomsday
11-25-2004, 03:26 PM
Lord.

Ben-Hur is hardly my favorite movie, but the reason I and so many other "movie experts" hold it in such high regards is because it's a great movie. I guess if you did compare it to LOTR, it would be boring, after all CGI was basically non-existent back in 1959, and a lot of people can't comprehend the concept of a movie having a "plot" unless it's surrounded by dazzling computer eye candy.

Besides, it's one thing to "praise the old classics." Not everyone likes them, I understand. But people who completely disregard them and their influence and place them under movies like ROTK, those are the people who need a movie lesson or two. I just want the ROTK hype to wear off, when people start using their heads and rationality before saying how it's the greatest movie ever.

Andrey83
11-25-2004, 05:51 PM
Well, i actually like FOTR much more then ROTK just so thats said (since you brought up rotk)...

Anyway, i also said i thought Ben-Hur was a good movie.

But i see your point. I do. But i just feel you shouldnt judge people who puts newer movies in front of old classics. If you know what i meen. Alot of "you people" often do that. Not you personally. More like those who favor the old classics often tend to say that the ones who favor new movies "know nothing about quality". Know what i meen?

I really liked Titanic back in '97..Ben Hur made me fall asleep just like ROTK, plus, Kate Winslet rocks (especially if she's nakkeee.) Fanboys, don't kill me, I know I just broke a law by admitting that I do not worship and love ROTK, don't kill me!

Edit: I actually have seen Ben Hur a couple of times, so its not like i'm giving an uneducated opinion. It was good, just...not great.

I disagree with the person that said that Ben-Hur is losing because no one has seen it. I am a huge movie buff who has seen a lot of movies from every decade from the 30's on. Actually I have seen all three movies and I am going with ROTK hands down. Ben-Hur was melodramatic (although you could plausibly say that for all three), overly religious and it had Charleton Heston, not a good actor at all. I could never understand how such a horrible actor landed such good roles such as in Soylent Green, The Planet of the Apes, etc. I liked his other historical religious epic The Ten Commandments much better. The Chariot race seen was badass however. :)
