Spielberg or lucas? Who do you like better? This is a tough one but I'd have to say spielberg. Oh, by the way, I would add kerry conran( what a genius) but he only made one movie so when he goes further into the business maybe I'll have him in a thread like this.

Are you insane?! Geroge Lucas one of the best film makers in Hollywood history?!!! HELL NO!!!! He may be on of the worst in history, he is no where near the top.

Spielberg is up there though. But to include Gerge Lucas in this is blasphemy, insanity, and horribly incorrect.

Quit making threads all the time, contribute towards others, but make the contribution at least half decent.

Moviemaker , I'm sorry but stop making stupid threads , it's getting ridiculous.

Lucas is a marketing genius , I'll give him that , but to say he's one of the top 2 film makers of all time is just absurd.
He may be down the bottom of the list like Glordreen said , certainly nowhere near the top.
Spielberg , is up there , he's a workhorse and is possibly the greatest POPCORN filmaker ever but Lucas can sometimes come off as a joke.

Moviemaker... here's an idea. Since you like making stupid threads, just do one in the CS! Community titled "stupid threads I felt like making" and whenever you feel the urge to create another pointless thread, just post your idea in there.

Out of those two, Spielberg.

I don't consider Lucas one of the best. Spielberg yes, but not Lucas.

coming from frizzo, that's damn funny

Lucas has some great stories but his directing is very hit-and-miss. therefore he's not going to be considered as one of the best 2 directors.

Spielberg, he rarely makes a film that disappoints. You gotta love Lucas for Star Wars, but, other than that he hasn't done a whole lot as "filmmaker", sure he created ILM, Pixar, THX, Skywalker Sound, whatever. I don't count those as things having to do with being a "filmmaker" though.

Spielberg.

Pielberg is a great folmmaker, whereas Lucas makes what I would call a product - yes I love Star Wars but thats more for the action and excitement, not for the narrative, story or use of fvarying film stock or anything like that - which is what I consider to be the tricks of a Film maker.
I would put Peter Jackson over George Lucas anyday- not just for LOTR, but provong he can do other things like Heavanly Creatures whereas Lucas has only really ever done Star Wars.
But yes Spielberg would still win thru sheer body of great work.

lucas started out great, with thx-1138, american graffiti, and the original star wars trilogy, but after the indiana jones trilogy ended, he really went downhill. he's by no means a great filmmaker, even though some of his films are great. spielberg has made some great films as well, and i woiuld say he's a great filmmaker, but not the best. recently, his films haven't been that great either, in my opinion. i'd say of the two, spielberg is better.

Ok kid, if you honestly believe that Lucas and Speilberg are the two best directors in Hollywood history, you need to get out more, and watch some real movies.

I agree. Pielberg makes outstanding folms. But I prefer Spielberg and his films.

Lucas has made THX, American Graffiti and Star Wars which is one of the most important movies in the history of Hollywood but he has made only three movies !!
Spielberg has made a lot of movies more than Lucas. He has made any kind of movies: science fiction, drama, comedy, war. He is the director of masterpieces like Schindler's list, E.T., Saving Private Ryan, Close Encounters of the third kind, jaws, Indiana Jones.....
So I've voted for Spielberg.
Anyway they're two great directors. :)

Spielberg easily.

I'll go as far to say that Steve is the King movie director alive today.

Even though my favorite movie is LOTR I'll still admit the Steve easily surpasses Jackson.

If Jackson makes a lot more movies then he might have a chance.

Well considering I've enjoyed 98% of Spielberg's movies, as well as I've already always stated him as one of the best directors, and then as well also that his name attached to a picture usually gets me to see the movie... Yeah, in other words I picked Spielberg.

Besides all THAT mumbo jumbo, I wouldn't consider George Lucas one of the best film-makers... at all. He's made three really good movies... and it pretty much stops there. And while he also had co-writers and directors on those films, that doesn't say much either.

I consider Star Wars and the Star Wars universe that of my favorite, and I love to listen to George Lucas talking about it, but I'm sorry, he is very very far from being the best director of all time.

-Glordreen was a bit harsh, but yeah, he's right.

Oh, and yes I will aknowledge Lucas' triumphs. He has paved way for technological advancements and helpful utilities and tools for movie making, Along with his helpful hand and funding, putting together keen minds and whatnot, he's developed quite a bit for himself. However, that does not make him one of the greatest directors. =P

Spielberg, he consistantly makes excellent films, both popcorn and serious. Lucas on the other hand can be great (American Grafitti, Star Wars) but then he also made terrible movies (Howard the Duck, Radioland Murders). He's a better producer than a director but I wouldn't call him one of the worst filmmakers of all time.

I can take Schindler's List and its enough to know that he is better than Lucas.Well, that's just me of course.

I agree. I don't even consider George Lucas the creator of the classic trilogy. So yea, he directed how things should go and told actors what to do, but he didnt create the rich story, the powerful dialouge, and storytelling that made the classic trilogy such a classic. So no, I wouldnt pit George against Spielberg, because he is nowhere near the expertice of Spielberg.

OK, in terms of GOOD movies those directors directed, we've got:

Lucas: THX-1138, American Graffiti, Star Wars: A New Hope.
Spielberg: Indiana Jones Trilogy, Jurassic Park, ET, Close Encounters, The Color Purple, Schindler's List, Minority Report (hey, i liked it), and Jaws...and i'm sure to have missed some.

On the strength of those, I'll go with Spieley....BUT I think neither of them are one of the two best filmmakers in the history of hollywood. Kubrick was better, Hitchcock was better, hell, even Sam Raimi is better (in my opinion).

I also get kind of sickened by Spielberg's incessant sentimentality. He's the reason for AI's (relative) failure...if only Kubrick had lived to make it...it would have been a far better final film than Eyes Wide Shut, had he made it.

I'm sure hitchcock is better than them both and maybe kubrick too but i never saw their movies so those two are my opinions. About sam riami...i loved spidey 1 & 2 but face it, spielberg and lucas are better.

uhhhhh, have you seen the Evil Dead (directed by Sam Raimi) films? they display much more inventiveness than Spielberg's films, certainly (Lucas's earlier work though, that was simply class). They're better, too.

Personally I don't think either is the best but Spielberg has an imagination that Lucas could only dream of. Star Wars, while one of the greatest stories and movies period, was bad for Lucas because his whole life for thirty years has been Star Wars. I am dying to see what he will do after this is over and if he decides to make more Star Wars, I will kill myself.

Back in the 80's, this would have been a toss up.
Since then, Spielberg has made some phenomenal films (Private Ryan, Schindler's List, Minority Report) and Lucas has made 2 Star Wars movies, neither of which are very good IMO.

Actually, his name was originally Indiana Smith, but Steven didn't like the name. So then they changed it to Indiana Jones.

George still came up with the name, but that's worth noting.

Agreed 100% with my buddy Snik. Lucas is more of a marketing genius, and nowhere near being one of the best. He wouldn't even be in the top 50 for all I'm concerned, whereas Spielberg would be in the top 15.

So? He's directed 4 of the 6 films now, 1 of those being really good and another one of them not even out yet. Since this is a question of filmmaking prowess, Spielberg owns Lucas in every single way.Just because he's the mind behind Star Wars doesn't mean you have to give him a B/J for it, figuratively speaking.

So, if you want to talk Star Wars, let's all give a big round of applause to Irvin Kershner

I havent been here in awhile so i dont want to read all the arguements, but i think spielberg takes this one easily. George did a great job with the star wars but in the old trilogy(which is the better ones) he only directed the first.
