Not sure if someone have had a thread on this before, but i doubt it :) I think i would have seen it.

So, (even though i hate the translated names) whats the names of Caracters and locations and stuff in your language?

I can start with some Norwegian:

Merry - Munti (damn, thats so ugly)

I'v always wondered why they bothered to change location and character names for foriegn translations of LOTR, I seem to remmber Tolkien not being too pleased about it.

I know that often the name in other langage are silly but if we take the original name, the pronounciation change with the language. I know that Tolkien wanted that the name to be spelt correctly. But for example "Shire" if we speak it in the natural French manner that sounds very strange and not common. In French "Shire" will sound like this: "Sheer". So some things must be changed to correspond in a certain manner at the way of speaking of the country. Myself I don't like neither the translation into another language but it's because I understand easily English and know the way of pronouncing it(but I don't write it easily, I'm sorry for the many mistakes I write down without noticing it :-/) and not everybody in Belgium or France know how to pronounce English.

Agree. And since your example is from my language i can say that we have no problem saying "shelob" in Norway. Though it would become "shelop" probably when we pronounced it. But not Hutula. Thats just stupid. I never liked the translations, so thats why I read the book in English :)
