View Full Version : Movies That Deserve Better Treatment

Any movies you think could have done better at the box office had the studio been easier on it, or a movie that you think deserves a second chance?

The Girl Next Door
http://www.impawards.com/2004/posters/girl_next_door.jpg

Sure, Fox gave this a good DVD and I'm thankful, but I think The Girl Next Door just got lost in the shuffle. If they gave it another chance, this time with better-done marketing, it could be huge. I found it to be a charming, witty, and heartfelt throwback to John Hughes comedies, with a 21st century edge. It was not a gross-out movie.

I dont really need to say much about how this film was mishandled by its distributors.

Disney tried to squeeze a standard summer actioner out of what should have been a gritty, realistic dark ages war movie. It doesn't work and the final product has suffered at the box office as a result. I can't wait for the R-rated DVD.

Oh and the "from the producer of Pirates of the Caribbean" is a bit misleading way to advertise for it. People were expecting some sort of cornballish fun they got with that movie and were probably disappointed.

Heck, I couldn't get through a few hours without seeing a commercial for this movie, many of which overblew everything and pretty much just stopped short of touting it as one of the more important experiences you'll have in your life!

The Iron Giant, dammit!

The movie that is #1 in the "movies that deserve better treatment" category is Once Upon A Time in America. The film was re-edited by the studio without the filmmakers desire and ended up completely butchering the film Sergio Leone almost died making. He had a bad heart throughout the entire production. To top that they preferred to market Police Academy and didn't even enter Ennio Morricone for Oscar Consideration.

Citizen Kane

Unfortunately, that happens to many films. The worst example is probably The Magnificent Ambersons. The last third of the film was refilmed, and Welles's footage was destroyed.

Neverending
08-05-2004, 10:46 PM
That also happened on Superman II. The Salkinds fired Richard Donner and brought in Richard Lester (A Hard Day's Night) to re-write and re-film the movie.

It's not the lack of it, it was that it was all gross-out teen comedy marketing, advertising some sort of sex comedy that isn't really the movie GND is. None of them revealed it was actually a romantic comedy, and a charming and sweet one at that.

But I agree with Iron Giant.

None of them revealed it was actually a romantic comedy, and a charming and sweet one at that. I don't really know about that. Some of the ads did feature the gross out type of stuff (namely after the film was released) while its main marketing seemed to focus around a sweet coming of age type flick and avoided the whole gross out stuff. In fact, I remember Ebert & Roeper commenting about it on their show where they aired one of the "coming of age" type ads for the film and said it was misleading audiences because it was mostly gross out. I personally can't say since I haven't seen the film. I guess I just saw more of the sweeter ads and you saw more of the raunchy ones.

The Punisher. Lions Gate did very poorly marketing the movie and should have pulled it as soon as QT and Miramax announced Kill Bill 2 was coming out at the same time. This would have been good for a very early Spring or late Autumn release. I love this movie and think it's one of Marvels best adaptations of their characters, but it just got lost in the rest of the revenge movies of April.

there was a fair bit of hype over here for it.

Prob in disagreement from everyone, but I think Club Dread had little hype, and I loved it. Sure it was chock full of cheese and badness, but that was the point. It was awesome.
Also, another is Wrong Turn. It's promoting was halted after the MPAA found the first trailer a bit too "risky" for television.

versus is a japanese movie, made for like 400,000 dollars so it's very low budget. The story is confussing and the movie tells very little plot but it's the action that really makes the movie fun. It's basically a zombie movie, with samurai swords. And this is the first movie where zombies fire guns!!. It's a very gory movie, with lots of action!. ANd also the characters really have no names. it's really funny how the people in the movie fire hundreds and hundreds of bullets and they only show them reloaded once. Theres also a funny matrix spoof of someone trying to doge bullets. Make sure you listen to the japanese track with the eng. subs, because the english dub is bad. Plus the lines in the movie are so funny

"your slow bullets are no match for me. I'm 500 times faster than mike tyson"
