Who or what determines if a movie gets theatrical release or a direct to video release? I often wondered this because I have seen some good movies that would have been great in theaters and some that were in theaters that should have been dtv. And I have been shocked to see movies with actors like Dustin Hoffman, Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro go direct to video.

It's all about money. It costs a lot more money for a film to be developed for a theatrical release than straight to video. I heard it cost somewhere from $3000 - $5000 per reel.

I actually thought it was more than that per reel. I dont know for sure but that is a bunch of money none the less.

Well, I see the Al Pacino one at Wal-Mart. It's a pretty new release and I don't remember seeing it advertised for theaters. I think it was called "People I know"
Here's a pic of hit from Amazon. http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0001XAPWY.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

I heard it had a limited release and they were Clerics. I've only seen the movie once and thought it was great. I need to pick it up on DVD sometime.
