What's a movie that you really like but you don't think most people know about?
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00002RASJ.01.LZZZZZZZ.gif
Today's choice for me is Running Time. Bruce Campbell stars as a crook in this movie that's meant to look (and, while it's obvious where the cuts are, gets a lot of visual style out of) like it was filmed in one, long, continuous shot. Bruce Campbell's great in it. Anita Barone is very attractive and puts on a good performance as Campbell's love interest.

A hilarious version of MacBeth with fast food and Christopher Walken. It feels sort of like a Coens comedy and it's always hilarious. Walken even has one of his great monologues in this one. It also stars James LeGros, Maura Tierney, and Andy Dick (though his part is more of a cameo). It's very funny especially if you know MacBeth.
Rent it, buy it, love it.

Documentary filmmakers André and Rémy have found an ideal subject in Ben. He is witty, sophisticated, intelligent, well liked-and a serial killer. As André and Rémy document Ben's routines, they become increasingly entwined in his vicious program, sacrificing their objectivity and their morality. Controversial winner of the International Critics' Prize at the 1992 Cannes Film Festival, Man Bites Dog stunned audiences worldwide with its unflinching imagery and biting satire of media violence.

THE KID STAYS IN THE PICTURE (2002)
Kick ass documentary on the life and times of legendary producer Robert Evans.
With the unique twist of Evans himself narrating it.
Evans is one ****ed up but fascinating man which describes this film as well.
Fans of "Kid Notorious" should check this out!
Highly recommended for movie buffs too.

SUCKERS (1999)
Suckers is an amazing film which quite accurately shows the sleaziness of car salesman.
Like Jaws kept people out of the water this will keep them out of dealerships.
Great Directing , Great dialogue and one of the best performances I have ever seen by Daniel Benzali. The characters are supposed to be unlikable which adds to this films charm.
Recommended for people who dig Tarantino flicks.
Director Roger Nygard Directed The cult Documentaries , Trekkies and Trekkies 2.

It's so weird because I just remembered it like a day ago and couldn't remember the name...one I recommend. no prob vic. yeah it's a weird movie but still pretty good. i know you really don't get a history of the characters or anything but its mainly the events that accour around Ross(Jason S) for 3 days. i like at the beginning of the credits where it says "This is about the truth and the lies about the truth." but overall i rate it a 8.5/10. and the soundtrack by Billy Corgan(Smashing Pumpkins) couldn't get any better

DEAD MAN (1995) Written and Directed by Jim Jarmusch
"Dead Man is the story of a young man's journey, both physically and spiritually, into very unfamiliar terrain. William Blake travels to the extreme western frontiers of America sometime in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Lost and badly wounded, he encounters a very odd, outcast Native American, named "Nobody," who believes Blake is actually the dead English poet of the same name. The story, with Nobody's help, leads William Blake through situations that are in turn comical and violent. Contrary to his nature, circumstances transform Blake into a hunted outlaw, a killer, and a man whose physical existence is slowly slipping away. Thrown into a world that is cruel and chaotic, his eyes are opened to the fragility that defines the realm of the living. It is as though he passes through the surface of a mirror, and emerges into a previously unknown world that exists on the other side."
Staring: Johnny Depp, Gary Farmer & Lance Henriksen
Cameo Appearances by: John Hurt, Robert Mitchum, Gabriel Byrne, Iggy Pop, Alfred Molina, Billy Bob Thornton
Deadman is a surrealistic art house film that is driven more by image then plot. It has the ethereal feel of early morning fog, and is as hauntingly beautiful, to listen to (thanks to Neil Young's soundtrack) as it is to watch. Though most will hate it, I recomend it highly.

A frequently overlooked masterpiece from John Carpenter. It contains Sam Neil's best performance and probably the best of Carpenter's direction. The dvd's not very good, but it contains a commetary from the always entertaining Carpenter and somebody else I can't think of right now.

Tequila Sunrise.
The movie was on Encore not to long ago. They might re-air it. The cinematography by late Conrad Hall is amazing. You won't be disappointed. The film is written and directed by Robert Towne. Towne is the man who wrote Chinatown. The film has its flaws, but it's a cool late `80s romantic-thriller. Oh, and about the Michelle Pfeiffer moment, you'll know what I'm talking about when you see it.

Kalifornia
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/0792846435.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Well-performed, well-acted and well-directed thriller that has some slow points but ultimately builds to a very satisfying conclusion. With this cast, it's a surprise that it's so little-known, but when I bought it, I hadn't met anyone who'd heard of it.
David Duchovny and Michelle Forbes are a couple. Duchovny's a writer, Forbes is a photographer. They decide to write a book on serial killers, by going from place to place where some of the worst murders of all time had occurred, and take pictures and write down notes. Before they go, they pick up a couple for company, but as their luck would turn out, they've picked up a serial killer in Brad Pitt, and his clueless girlfriend Juliette Lewis.
The performances are what drive this low-budget atmospheric movie, and Brad Pitt's is perfect. Pitt is a very good actor, as he's proven in Fincher's movies, and Kalifornia deserves to be higher on his resume. Duchovny is also excellent as the writer, and the reactions of all the people involved to the secret at hand, in Pitt's character's true identity of a murderer, are a turning point in the film. The movie has an excellent conclusion, and this movie definitely is worth the $9.99 you can find the unrated DVD for anywhere.

Coppola made The Conversation in between The Godfather and The Godfather part 2, and is considered his most personal project. It stars Gene Hackman as a Harry Caul, a surveilance man who questions the morality of his profession after a job that could threaten somebody's life. It's a deliberately slow and meticulous thriller with some stunning twists toward then end.
It features one of Gene Hackman's finest performances as a paranoid, lonely man who discovers his own conscious before his own tragic result. This was actually filmed during Watergate and the parallels are quite startling as Coppola points out during the commentary. The climatic scene has the same effect the shower scene in Psycho had before it had been parodied and shown hundreds of times on television and elsewhere. It even features a young Harrison Ford in a surprisingly chilling supporting role. Whatever happened to that kid?
Anywho, a great film.

A techno-punk Sci-Fi adventure with Jude Law and Jenifer Jason Leigh. It's one weird, twisted, fun ride. Of course that practically defines Cronenberg's work. It, along with Dark City, was over-shadowed by a little movie called The Matrix, which contains more stylish gun battles but not as fun or challenging plot.

I don't know how, I don't know why, but, somehow, this is one of my favorite movies. It's about a pathetic comedian who grows a third arm on his back. The film is sort of like Eraserhead, but a bit lighter (only just a bit). It's not exactly hilarious, but it's weird, compelling, and fascinating. And James Caan cameos in the film as a doctor (Dr. Scurvy) in what must be on of the most bizarrely interesting doctor's office scenes ever.

I think maybe people have heard of Triumph of Love but maybe not many have seen it. It's based on a very old French play with a Shakesperian romantic comedy plot. Mira Sorvino plays a Princess who falls in love with the rightful heir to her throne, her enemy. In order to make him fall in love with her she disguises herself and seduces the young man as well as his guardians - a philospher and his sister - also her enemies.
Mira Sorvino is awesome in this movie. Also starring: Ben Kingsley (also great), Fiona Shaw, and Jay Rodan. That's the primary reason I think it's cool. Top-shelf acting, all around.

Good choices but I wouldn't call those four as underground as you might think, especially Dirty Work. I think most people know Dirty Work.
whats red vs. blue about?
Red vs. Blue is like a TV show. A bunch of guys (and a gal) took Halo, debugged it, and then recorded the in-game cinemas and added voice-overs, creating essentially the Halo sitcom. I'm no fan of Halo, but this is one funny-ass show. The writing's better than anything you could actually watch on TV, and while in the middle of the 2 seasons it gets a little dry (the show was obviously nudged by Microsoft to tone down some of the language and things), it recovers. Funny stuff.
Brotherhood of the Wolf
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00006I04R.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Made some strong, small waves upon release, but I don't think it was ever big. Anyway, Brotherhood of the Wolf is great. It has the vaguest traces of Raimi, as if maybe he made a monster movie as seriously as he possibly could. Action is somewhat Matrix-y, but it still rocks, and the creature is cool. The final fight scene is awesome. Assuming you can sit still for the three hour running time, I guarantee you'll love it.
Idle Hands

I suppose if TenD's picks are known enough, this one is too, but I might also be overestimating it. Anyway, Idle Hands is a comedy about demonic possession. Devon Sawa of Final Destination (where is he these days? He's cool...) wakes up one morning to find his parents missing and his reefer all dried up. One of these concerns him more than the other. But soon, he discovers that it was him -- or rather his demonic hand -- that is the reason his parents are missing. More than a trace of Evil Dead II here, it's a shame it's not on the TV when he's flipping channels. See it for Sawa's inspired comedic performance, and for Jessica Alba in her undies. :D

Idle Hands is damn funny. Seth Green and an almost naked Jessica Alba steal the show.

I absolutely LOVE Brotherhood of the Wolf. And the fight scenes aren't "Matrixy" they are actual historic english kickboxing with some slowmo for accent. Truly a remarkable film.

Kevin Bacon and Charlize Theron square off in a smarter-than-average kidnapping thriller. Joe (Bacon), Cheryl (Courtney Love), and Marvin (Pruitt Taylor Vince) are a kidnapping team with the perfect plan. Perfect, that is, until they pick on the wrong wholesome but incredibly feisty young family.

The coolest Yakuza film you've never heard of...
Brother
http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00005RYKV.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg
Takeshi Kitano directs and stars in this gang war masterpiece. This is a gangster movie that makes you think while you're being enetertained. Takeshi Kitano plays a character called "brother" who is a disgraced Yakuza and starts his rise to power in L.A with his half-brother and his friends. It's violent and intense. The ending is pretty powerful too. A must-see!

I've been meaning to find this ever since I saw a movie with Kitano. I'd seen the posters and things, so I remembered it...
Also want to see Six-String Samurai.
Idle hands was an alright movie.
That's what I thought at first. But when I watched it a second time I just totally suspended any disbelief and enjoyed the movie. Of course, you kinda have to for that type of movie........

I actually saw that movie on DVD at a yard sale one time for 7 bucks. i guess I should have gotten it

The City Of Lost Children Directed by:Jean-Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro Written by:Gilles Adrien & Jean-Pierre Jeunet
Krank is a mad scientist, who is tormented by his inability to dream. An affliction that is aging him prematurely, so with the aid of this brothers, who are four identical clones. He kidnaps children and takes them back to his lair, so he can steal their dreams. But since they always fear him, Krank can only extract their nightmares. That is until he discovers the fearless little brother of a circus strongman known as One. When little brother is kidnapped, One along with Miette, a young orphaned girl, sets out to rescue him from The City of Lost Children.
Staring: Ron Pearlman & Daniel Emilfork
Another love it or hate it film, TCOLC is eye candy, surrealistic and just flat out fun to look at. It’s easy to see the connection between Amelie and TCOLC, Jeunet’s visual style is all over both. This film though is much darker, and more of a cross between a Burton & Gilliam fairytale. Very metaphorical, and yet easy to follow and watch, this film appeals to the inner child, while it entertains the mature side, very artistic, and one of Pearlman’s best performances imo. Visually this film won’t disappoint, as a side note, I think anyone who was taken by Cuarón’s visual style in "Harry Potter & POA", will be blown away by look of TCOLC and so should check it out.

Heheh yah Nick Stahl. He's such an ass in the movie it's great. On the DVD special features they have pictures of the real kids too. It's great to see the comparison.
Kids is Larry Clark's most well known movie, which I also love, but I definitely prefer Bully.

Fans of Heat and Collateral should enjoy one of his early works. Even though the ending shootout seemed too much like it was made for tv, the rest of the movie really works. James Caan is magnificent.
