Danny Elfman is a brilliant composer in my opinion. It is true that he hasn't been as good as he was in the late `80s and early `90s, but I feel he is still doing interesting and creative work.

By the way, I noticed I made a mistake with Big Fish. I put 2002 instead of 2003. A mod can fix the mistake.

My personal favorite is Black Beauty. It's so beautiful and sad, yet cheery when it needs to be. I love the main theme.
Although Big Fish runs a close second.

That movie was directed by Caroline Thompson. Elfman's former girlfriend and screenwriter of Edward Scissorhands. I think that could explain why he wrote such a beautiful score. I remember at the time I read an interview in which he said that her p-u-s-*-y was his favorite thing in the world. LOL. :p

WOW! You're the only person I know who has said that. I know people who believe that he hasn't made a good score since Batman. Of course they're wrong and should get slapped across the face. Rick James style!

I liked his score for the Hulk quite a bit, but Spider-Man is still better. Same with Batman.

I picked Sleepy Hollow. It's just so creepy and erie, and it's great to play at your house on Halloween to scare the crap outta the youngins. :)

Hes so awesome, but if I just had to pick one I gotta say Pee Wee. So weird and original, yet good and fits in really well.

I'm amazed at how many people voted for Spider-Man. I honestly wouldn't call that his best work. While Edward Scissorhands is a masterpiece in my mind I still consider Batman to be his greatest achievement. That soundtrack is still as fresh and original as it was 15 years ago. The Batman Theme, First Confrontation, Batman to the Rescue, Descent Into Mystery, Attack of the Batwing, Waltz to the Death, The Final Confrontation, Finale, etc. Those are all amazing scores. He should have gotten an Oscar for that.

Sleepy Hollow is quite possibly his best score, but i generally like all his scores, still Sleepy Hollow is my favourite, i also love Batman Returns score though
I love what he did with sleepy hollow. but come on, this is the man responsible for the Simpsons theme. I bow down to him, we are not worthy.

The Sleepy Hollow music worked great for the action scenes, but I wasn't too crazy about the actual main theme.

Like Droidguy said earlier it is impossible to actually choose some of his scores over others because the man can work wonders with every movie, put Danny Elfman down and ask him to pen a score for the movie he'll produce some great stuff

The Nightmare Before Christmas doesn't just have a good theme, but great songs as well.

Hard choice, but I would have to go with Batman.
Whenever I fight crime, I like to have the Batman soundtrack popped in my CD player.

Batman
Hulk
Nightmare Before Christmas
Nightbreed
...In that order.
IMO his scores to both the Spiderman films
aren't his best work. They lack much of the originality
and impact he showed in Batman and Hulk.

I agree! Batman in my opinion is a masterpiece. That was Oscar-winning material. Spider-Man's theme was very well-done and he did a good job with the entire film, but its simply not his best work. I only saw Hulk once, so I don't recall the theme that well.

I downloaded this score online. It's very good, but not he's best. Although I've actually heard the score before. I'm not sure where, but I've heard it before. Perhaps it was in a trailer or something.

I know I'm bumping a three year old thread, but there's some things I wanna point out. Since creating this thread there has been some Elfman scores that have grew on me. For example, I used to think that the music in Spider-Man was pretty good, but nothing special. Now I think he did an incredible job. And its sad that Raimi cut most of his music for the sequel which resulted in Elfman dropping out of Spider-Man 3.
Here's a deleted track from Spider-Man 2: (I think its better than what it was replaced with)

The Hulk score has also grown on me. Check it out:

And there's also some Elfman scores like Back to School, Big Top Pee Wee, Hot to Trot, and Midnight Run which I never really paid any attention to but now I consider some of my favorites. Check them out:

And some of his recent work like Willy Wonka, Corpse Bride, and Meet the Robinsons have been pretty good. :)

Edward Scissorhands but I wish Burton was convinced to make this Idea from Elfman - he wrote a whole plot and this is one of the songs

I like Batman Returns and Dick Tracy too

He is a musical genius. The complexity is the interpretation of storyline and the relationship of the musical presence required.
Pee Wee was a stupid little movie that is a guilty Pleasure with the whimsical music that amplifies the characters.
Imagine Batman without the dark tones of the low brass and strings, with reoccuring undertones that are demonstrated many different variations.
Edward Scissorhands melodic uniqueness when Depp is cutting.
He is a freakin' modern day musical marvel. He is the Williams of our generation. Rent any other movie released at the same time as any of Elfman's listed above, then compare. Elfman is head and shoulds above the field.
Animations belong to Alan Menken
the 70's and 80's belonged to John Williams with Star Wars, Jaws, and ET.
the 90's are all Elfman. Little slow other the Spidey this decade, and the compete of the Lord of the rings and Harry Potter music.
Just my opinion.
Compare
