I loved the movie and bought it, but my one and only problem was the American arrogance behind it, which while not only totally historically inaccurrate, but just is plain stupid to think an American came over and saved the legacy of the Samurai for Japan... Maddox actually had a funny thing for this the other day...

hahaha but what more can you expect from a Hollywood film? good bless 'em!
the movie was actually better than i thought it would be. i always think "tom cruise? pass" but when i'm watching him i remember that he really is a good actor.. nice scenery (that would be NZ and not Japan though right?!?!?!!) and pretty good fight sequences..

I'm going to say it again, they were not referring to Algren as the Last Samurai.
I really liked it, but the ending disappointed me.

It doesn't matter. It's the idea that they needed a dumb American to come in a help them save their culture that's insulting...

well as someone said he was not "the last samurai" but i dont think he was needed either, in fact if you actually watched the movie you would see that had nothing to do with it. it was a film, about a war torn place (japan) and a man (algren) who was sent there to take a rebel leader out (katsumoto) after getting his ass kicked algren is captured (and this is saving the country?) where he learns and admires the way of the samurai, he then fights with them to help savea way of life (not a country) and he only fights along side the man that saved the country--katsumoto. in my oppinion the best part of the story/dynamic is that katsumoto and algren are the same and they needed eachother to lead them to enlightenment, thats what they movie was about, any fool would know that...well obviously except dogbert.

As a Native American I can actually say that there have been people outside the culture that actually did kinda what Kevin Costner's character did to an extent. There were people out there like that loved the culture.

I was comparing storylines between the 2 movies, they are very similiar. I know that movies use characters to introduce general audiences to the culture of the movie's subject as Dances With Wolves and The Last Samurai did. The viewer takes the same journey as the main character through his experiences in the movie.

It's a good and well staged film. It's also refreshing to see a battle scene in a recent film where the army ISN'T CGI.
I didn't think it was insulting to the Japanese. It respects the culture and only introduces the American to tell the story for an American audience. Algren didn't save the samurai. Though he fought for them, he isn't really a samurai which is shown at the end when he doesn't commit seppuku, something that sets him apart from the real samurai.
Also in regards to the title, I took it that the last samurai doesn't mean Algren but Katsumoto and his samurai (the word's also plural).

I didn't like this movie, and my Japanese drama professor said that it was riddled with historical inaccuracies.
Plus, i dont think Tom Cruise is a talented actor. I fail to see his appeal.

i think he's one of the best actors around. this man can act. even though he appears to be arrogant, he isn't i think. a man who understands his work. i loved him in MI1 and Minority Report, he realy is a believable actor. of course with his other/older movies he has proven that he's hollywoods best (i.e. Interview w/a Vampire etc.).
i love how he chose to play the villain in Collateral. he looks bad ass. check out the trailer for this movie. i believe this will be the underdog to beat any other suspenseful/thrilling movie this year. Tom Cruise rocks!

i couldnt agree more!
Tara-there are not very many historical innacuracies in it at all actually, while certain areas do take liberties in story telling most of what happened really happened.

I agree.:D
Don't forget Magnolia. Easily Cruise's best performance.
As for The Last Samurai, I really enjoyed it. Everything about the movie looks great, especially the landscapes and the village. The battles were wonderfully put together, despite Cruise's uncanny superhuman invincibility. Cruise was very good in this movie, but I think Watanabe's performance was the best of the film.

Your professor may be right, but I doubt historical accuracy was the aim of the film. It's a movie, not history class.
