View Full Version : What is the most disappointing third movie of a trilogy?

I saw this as a daily poll question on IMDB.com and thought it might make an interesting thread. Hopefully it won't turn into another Lord of the Rings vs. The Matrix or whatever else type of thread.

Not sure which one is most disapointing, but scream 3 sure is the worst so i voted that

Scream 3 was awful, but then again so was Scream 2.
I voted for Beverly Hills Cop 3. It had next to no story and worse, had next to no funny jokes. At least the second one was mildy enjoyable, but this was just pathetic.

Yeah I don't think you can call a Scream movie disappointing. I thought they all sucked. But Beverly Hills Cop movies were hilarious with the exception of 3. So I voted that one.

Well, I enjoyed the 1st and the 2nd to a certain point, but the 3rd was just dumb..... :)

i find it hard to be disapointed by the third installment in a series i love so even if they are disapointing i dont consider them so. also a lot of the ones on there i didnt really care much for any of the series' so my choice is ROTK: really enjoyed the first two, severly disapointed by the 3rd.
I can't say I was disappointed by T3 since I had a feeling it wasn't going to be good. I never thought The Godfather part 3 was that bad either (just sofia coppola shouldn't act).
Probably the last matrix disappointed me the most.

I liked Scream 1 and 2 but 3 is absolute garbage.
However, I can't honestly say that any third in any seires has ever dissapointed me, that would imply that I expected it to be good. I don't expect anything from the third in a movie series.

I took The Godfather Part III. It wasn't like it was even that bad, and it's certainly one of the better movies up there, it just had no chance from the begining. Anything would have been a disappointment after Parts I and II.

People are just voting for what they think so far. At least we haven't got into any of the back and forth bickering, yet. The hardcore fanboys must not have seen the thread yet. Also, the possibilites given were just the ones they had on IMDB. No one has voted for Indiana Jones or Die Hard as of now.

Revolutions is not the worst movie on that list but it was the biggest letdown. No one was expecting much from say, Jurrasic Park 3, but Revolutions dissapointed a lot of people.

1. Its about opinions
2. This is not the "worst" part 3 thread. Its the most "disappointing" part 3 thread. The two words share something in common, but a disappointing movie can still be good.

Ah I see, I guess what I consider disappointing is the fact that some of the films actually got a thrid movie. ;)

who on idmb would put return of the king on as the worst movie to end a trilogy this movie was surly one of the best movies of 2003 imo and it won best picture and personaly i think this is the best eneding for a trilogy period i honistly thought back to the future 3 was a good endeing too but it still left open for a 4th same with revolutions but thats why there having the matrix online in my opinion the worst was scream 3 i still dont know how they made a 3rd after how bad 2 was

I agree but most people will say that winning all those awards means nothing, which technically it doesn't if you don't like it, but they do have meaning. The movies are voted on and ROTK won nearly everything except for like one I think, its clearly the popular opinion that it was the best. Again I know popularity doesn't mean something is great, but its hard to deny that most people enjoyed it. As for that, "It only won them all because it was the last", thats bull. If they were really only doing it to honor the trilogy they would have only needed to give it best picture. I mean I doubt they went, "Meh, lets throw in Best Song just for the hell of it." That excuse is just used by haters to make them feel like their opinion is more valid then it really is.

Yeah, this whole RotK hate thing was cute at first. But now it's just downright annoying now. You know people, there are far more worst movies created out there that are poorly made( like Jaws 3 and Retro Puppetmaster). I'm going to say this to all LotR bashers. You are now absolutely obsessed in bashing this movie, that it's making you guys look a little odd because there are far worst movies out there( like Jaws 3 and Charlies Angels Full Throttle) and you people completely ignore bashing them. Word of advice, bash something that deserves bashing. Don't go bashing something that is good and not bad. Bash poorly made films, not epics like LotR. P.S.- Don't even think of bashing Ben Hur!

I was replying to Snik, oh and Invalid I don't mind your opinion but its when people just go out of there way to bash it, you know, they see LOTR and its like, "Bashing mode activated" I don't bash every single movie I don't like when I see them mentioned.

The return of the king
It should have been so much better than that, because the book is one of the best books, but the movie ruined many things from the book.
Only for that I voted for ROTK, because it is supposed to be "The portrayal of Tolkien book" and is not that good , and change too much and ruined a few things.

1-Jurassic Park 3
2-Robocop 3(wow, this movie sucks.)
3-Scary Movie 3
4-Austin Powers in Goldmember
(Funny film, but it tries too hard to surpass part 2.)
5-Back To The Future III
(This is the only trilogy I know that got progressively worse, but that I still enjoyed a lot. This was a good film, but it pretty much repeats what Part 2 did, which repeated what Part 1 did. However, I didn't realize this fact until I watched Part 2 again on ABC Family a couple of months ago. Again, though, I still liked it.)
(The last two films I really enjoyed, but they just aren't the best of their series and could have been better, IMHO. In Revolutions case, I thought it was better than Reloaded, but not as good as the first and a disappointing ending to the saga overall. In ROTJ's case, I find it to be the worst film of the SW saga but it was still a pretty good film.)
5-Return Of The Jedi
6-The Matrix Revolutions
As for the others; I though Scream 3 was pretty good, ROTK is my favorite film of the LOTR Trilogy and The Naked Gun 33 1/3 was hilarious to me. I didn't see a lot of the rest of those films.

I think since people are mentioning Police Academy and Jaws I can get away with mentioning Alien 3, and for me, Alien is still a trilogy because I hated number 3 so badly I refused to acknowledge its existance and think there is a further extended cut of Aliens that will fill the gaps between it and Resurection.
And yes, although it worked as a cheesy and pretty funny movie good for a laugh and not much else, Robo 3 was pretty bad, 2 was **** as well, neither can live up to Verhoven's original

I'm sorry, I don't mind if ROTK wasn't your favorite, or if you think it was the weakest, but you need to understand that its A MOVIE not the book. No one said it was the portrayal of Tolkien's book, its a portrayal of his world. It was never meant to be word for word and if it was a lot more peopel wouldn't have liked it. The LOTR books couldn't be translated into film they way they were written, its impossible, and by impossible I mean it would have made for terrible movies (even worse for the ones who already dislike it) The movies were meant to house the spirit of Tolkien's creation and it does that without a doubt.

exactly, imagine watching frodo and the other hobbits traveling and singing for like 30 minutes or longer
and if the films were the exact same as the book, ROTK would have been like 6 hours long
