Well, Mr. Frodo did answer your question. They did fly around killing things. Also they must be carefull because the fell beasts can be killed by arrows and stuff......

is there any real explanation where they were?

Didn't you see them flying around Minas Tirith causing chaos? Not that there was a great deal of killing they could do in comparison to the 10's of 1000's of Orcs anyway. The fell beasts could grab hold of and kill maybe 3 or 4 soldiers at a time, and 1 horse, but that was it.

Only in the heat of the battle on the Pelennor fields could they have been perhaps slightly more visible, but with the heard of Mumakil rampaging around I could see why they didn't decide to have the Nazgul getting in the way, especially as they'd already been the main focus during the retreat from Osgiliath.

The Weta computers would have blown up if they added any more beings to that battle.

they are often seen flying overhead, like when the trolls are pushing the siege towers, and when the rohirrim arrive you can see them flying about.
Also adt is right theyd just be in the way when the mumakil turn, plus most of the combatants on the field at the start are orcs, trolls etc

They were used enough, BUT...seing how they are so badass, i would have liked to see them used more, ecspesically in the siege of MT. I know they were there, but they could have been shown more, but what was shown of them was BEAUTIFUL. The Nazgul swooping down on MT has got to be one of my most favorite scenes out of any movie of all time. But i wish PJ would have shown them causing more havic;)

i love it when all the nazgul swoop down from out of the clouds above MT and all the freaky music... i love them picking men up especially when the witch king picks up four from the top and lets them fall to the bottom cirlce, you can hear the echoing thump of one landing on a rooftop

seeing the nazgul zoom down out of the cloud was just awesome. hope that we get to see a bit more of the nazful flying around in the EE

i like it when the witch king rushes past the camera as it's moving from the army to the troll smaking the door at the top with a giant hammer thing

that is one cool shot Lurtz. just something that i came up with just then, why didn't the people behind the door go up to the next level above that gate, and get some bows and arrows, and try to take out some of the orcs and the troll?

Maybe that was the top level.....

But I agree with everyone, one of my favorite parts of the Seige is when the Nazgul swoop down and that music plays.....hmm..
*goes and puts in the ROTK DVD*

it wasn't. the top level is the citadel, and that is only accessible by the tunnel. so at the most the troll was on hte 5th level
