Due to the roaring piracy trade the idea of releasing dvds of movies at the same time (or even before) the movies general release in theatres has been suggested.

I'd rent DVDs of most movies I wanted to see instead of going to the theater. DVDs are cheaper and many people can watch for a single price.
I would only go to the theater for movies I feel benifit from the big screen, mostly action movies and movies with great scenery.

Well, obviously the price scheme would be changed...
But it would come down to whether or not I wanted to see a movie on the big screen. I would go out and see Kill Bill Volume 1, I probably wouldn't see stuff like the Star Wars prequels in the theater at all, or not without previewing it first.
And if you like the movie, you could go right out and buy the disc, and share it with your friends. :D

i dont think this would work. the problem is that studios would stand to loose lots of box office income (because multiple people could watch the one DVD and they could view it multiple times - think would Titanic have made as much money in this case?)
therefore the price of hiring and buying DVD would increase alot, probably 5 times as much.
anyway i would prefer to watch a movie on DVD anyway, i've got a sony tv and a good 5.1 system anyway, and i think that even though the size of the image is bigger at the cinema, my tv has a much better picture quality. but im not willing to pay any more.

if this happened they would get less sales because no one would see it in theaters before they bought it

Would never happen. The whole reason they introduced the separate regions thing was so that they could keep to their system of theatre release, then rentals, then cable, then tv. It's all about the money.
