"According to a report on Counting Down, director John Carpenter has a script ready for THE THING 2. The reason for Carpenter's interest in making a sequel to his 1982 film apparently stems from the success of THE THING video game released two years ago.

Corona's Coming Attractions first received reports from industry insiders in late August 2002 that Carpenter had been approached by Universal, the studio that owns the rights to THE THING, about the possibility of working on a sequel. At that time our spies told us that there was a hold-up resulting from contract negotiations between Carpenter and the studio. We never heard anything further about the rumor nor did Carpenter ever comment on it until today."

I am a big fan of the first film, and if they bring back Kurt Russell as well, then I think this would be a good idea. It would be interesting to see where they take it. I remember an interview awhile ago with Russell, and he said if it happened he would be there, so I hope so.

Wow they would be incredible. I'm a huge fan of The Thing and to see a sequel by Carpenter would be awesome. Although I think they should start a new story and have no more than a cameo for Russell.

Bring it on. Love Carpenter, love Russell and loved The Thing. Those guys always work together so well and I'd think it'd be great to see them team up again.

I would literally **** in my pants if Carpenter actually had the balls to go through with it.

Bring it on.

To anyone that thinks this sequel would be a good idea - let me just say this: Escape from LA.

Thank-you.

Yeah, but Escape From New York is no The Thing.
I think if Carpenter were to make a sequel, he'd take it serious and really try to blow people away.
I seriously doubt he's going to go through with it though.

I liked Escape From LA, and am hoping they go through with a third film. The last I heard, it was Escape From Earth. If they go all out, it could be pretty good. They should just try and not repeat the same story this time.

First of all, John Carpenter's The Thing is a bonafide classic with old day Horror FX unlike today with Horror movies that have CGI written all over it, one has to wonder how the sequel would look with CGI vs Rob Bottin's FX work on the first one which after 22 years, still stands the test of time.. They would also have to bring Kurt Russell back for continuity sake as well as Keith David by showing both men frozen or neasr frozen when the rescue teams arrives to pick them back up..

It's interesting. When I go to CountingDown.com, I don't find any mention of this supposed news.

Ah, very good point. I'm completely against the sequel if only for the reason that it will tell us what happened at the end of the first one. I loved that ending.

Inferno I couldn't agree with you more!!! The ending of The Thing is fantastic and is a large part of the films appeal.

Damn these rumors, damn them to hell!!! I'm so fed up with them! Well thank god this one isn;t completely false. Earlier this week, rumors circulated the web that John Carpenter had a script prepared for Thing 2 and that there was a good chance of it being made. Well it was bullcrap, thank god we didn't report it! Inside you'll find confirmation on why it's false, false, false!

First reported on Countingdown.com then Aint it Cool News received the following bullsh#! scoop, "Just announced on Fox News that John Carpenter has stared work on the sequel to one of the best Horror / Sci-Fi films of the 80's - THE THING. Now, when I met John Carpenter in Atlanta for Dragon Con he stated that he absolutely loved the Dark Horse comic book sequel (released in the Mid Nineties) and was very interested in making the film if he got the funding. Having been a big fan of the original, the Dark Horse comic was an extremely well put together sequel. The events in the comic book follow MacReady & Childs sojourn out of the camp to try to find another arctic station. They were still unsure wether or not either of them were infected with the virus... until they are picked up by a US nuclear submarine and the horror starts again. It has some elements of Cameron's Aliens in it (Marines going into the station where the first movie's action unraveled) but all in all a great read. Considering that Kurt Russell and Keith David (two John Carpenter staples) have aged extremely gracefully, it would be plausible that they could reprise their roles. We will just have to see."

Harry Knowles destroys the news by writing, "Ok, so that's what I got. Then I called up John to see what he was up to. Turns out that the story is COMPLETELY FALSE. John is not directing THE THING 2. There is no THE THING 2 with him doing it. He told me that the last thing he heard was that Universal was looking to make a SCI FI CHANNEL Miniseries - and apparently he wasn't doing anything on that.

So what is John up to? Oh, he's playing around with a few things, but nothing that he's ready to start talking about yet. So let it be known, this THING 2 rumor is total bollocks!"

Might be good. Should they bring it out of Antarctica, or should the story just stay there? And should there be any female nudity?(And possibly male for the girls)

I love the idea behind The Thing - the whole you can't trust anyone story. Making a mini-series (with new characters and setting), could be great - if done well. Of course, that's a big "if".

The Thing is a master piece, should stay that way.

Inferno

And it will always be a master piece, but they could do a new film unconnected with the first, except for using a new thing. This way if it sucks, it doesn't destroy the original in anyway.
