its had really no plot (that revenge plot is played out)

I admire the hell out of what he's done for fimmaking. I just wish he'd sit back and let others take the reins like he did with ESB and ROTJ. I don't care about "his vision." I care about the quality of those visions and frankly they haven't been very good lately.

Hmm...since he's done the most writing and directing on the prequels, I can say I am not a fan of his writing. His ideas, sure, I love those, but his dialogue, action, plotting and characterizations not so much.

As for Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, for which he only wrote the story, I very much admire Irvin Kershner's directing -- it's brilliant, and this is a testament to why The Empire Strikes Back is my favorite Star Wars film. The movie is perfect from beginning to end, with brilliant hints at what Darth Vader is like behind the mask (not to mention a key revelation...;)), brilliantly devised space battles, fantastically done romance, and the introduction of Yoda (no, Episode I is not the introduction of Yoda).

And Return of the Jedi is a fine conclusion. I'm not so thrilled with the Ewoks, and maybe it's just me, but I always felt Death Star II was a bit redundant (although the whole half-built thing rocks, and without it, there would be no uber-important question in Clerks). But the movie is still great, and Luke's journey has a fitting conclusion.

But Lucas does have a place in Star Wars. He is the beginning of a collaborative effort to bring characters he created to life, and he gets things started mighty well with the original.

It's just that with the prequels, he's lost his focus, his purpose, and he's too control-insistent over the whole enterprise. What Lucas has lost is his ability to collaborate, his ability to make choices for the characters, and not just setting up future events, and most importantly, the desire to bring his love for his sources out in a way that other people can enjoy.

There was a time when Lucas was a giving filmmaker. I loved him then. Now it's all about take, and I'm not so enchanted anymore.

Reputed mobsters face off, again

One of the last times reputed Bonanno crime boss Joseph Massino talked with crony Frank Lino, they were meeting with lawyers at the federal detention center in Brooklyn in early 2003. Things didn't go well.

Lino, a captain in the crime family, got into an argument with Massino over legal fees, said one legal source, and both men -- who differ radically in physical appearance -- had an angry face-off.

"It looked like Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton," quipped the source to "Honeymooners" characters.

Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court Lino and Massino will again face off, but this time, far more than legal fees are at issue.

Lino is the first of many cooperating witness testifying for the prosecution in Massino's racketeering trial. The 61-year-old Massino is accused of complicity in seven murders, as well as loansharking, gambling and money laundering stemming from a 10-year stint as crime boss. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Lino, 66, is expected to continue on the witness stand today under cross-examination by Massino's attorney David Breitbart.

Last week, under questioning by assistant U.S. attorney Greg Andres, Lino placed Massino at the scene of the killing of three Bonanno captains -- Alphonse Indelicato, Philip Giaccone and Dominick Trinchera -- in May, 1981. He also said Massino had a role in the slaying of another captain, Dominick Napolitano, later that year.

An old criminal from Bensonhurst, Lino, who never made it out of high school, testified in a matter-of-fact way about the inner workings of the Bonanno family. As he spoke he was under the constant gaze of Massino's family and his own relatives, including son Joseph, whom he asserted was a soldier in the crime family.

Frank Lino plead guilty to six mob homicides when he agreed to cooperate last year. He said the name of the family changed in the mid-1990s to the "Massino" crime family after retired Cosa Nostra leader Joseph Bonanno Sr. wrote a book and talked about the workings of the ruling mob commission.

Lino lost his composure only once during his testimony when he retold the story of being present when the three captains -- Alphonse Indelicato, Philip Giaccone and Dominick Trinchera -- were shotgunned and attacked at a Brooklyn social club run by one-time Gambino turncoat Salvatore Gravano. The killing was done to halt factional fighting within the crime family, Lino said.

Though combative with Breitbart, Lino has so far not changed his story in any significant way on cross examination. He bristled when Breitbart suggested he hadn't disclosed all his wrongdoing to prosecutors.

"If I was going to admit to six murders, I would admit to a dozen murders," Lino said.

Lino testified he helped set up Napolitano for his August, 1981 killing in the basement of a Staten Island home. But one thing bothered him: His own son Robert was given the task of digging a grave. He was only 20 years-old, Lino said, and he was against it.
