View Full Version : What's the single best movie you've ever seen ?
I don't know if this topic has been posted before, but someone asked me this question the other day and it racked my brain for quite a while. People are usually able to recall a list of a few movies, or separate them by genre, but it's usually hard to pinpoint one movie alone.
So I ask you this question: what's your single favorite movie of all time?
(P.S. My pick is the Shawshank Redemption; I hadn't even heard of this film before a friend told me to rent it. I trust the opinions of many of the movie buffs on these boards, so therefore I'm interested in renting several more great films I may have never heard of.)

Requiem For a Dream - Aronofsky is definately the best director around at the moment. I can't wait for his new films.

I have to join the chorus: Fellowship of the Ring. And all signs point to Return of the King to come.

If you are looking for advise on a movie to watch, then let me help you out.
Look for....(drum roll please)...
HEAT
Director
Micheal Mann. He is the guy who brought you Miami Vice (TV), The Last of the Mohicans, The Insider, Ali, Manhunter, etc. This guy don't mess around.
Cast
Not only is Al Pacino in this movie, but Robert De Niro plays his counterpart. That alone is enough to watch this movie. Both actors deliver on every level, and out-perform the supporting cast. You can truly see why these two are the best in the field (Al Pacino is better and you know it, De Niro fans. HA). The supporting cast includes Val Kilmer, Tom Sizemore, Ashley Judd, Jon Voight, and on and on and on. Unbelieveable.
Story
This movie is an epic. The difference between this movie and other epics is the fact that other movies usually rest on a gimic of involve the past. This movie takes place in LA in the present. It is as simple as a cops and robbers movie, but there is nothing simple about this movie. The similarities between cops and robbers is more clear than the differences. DEEP.
Overall, the cimematography, the music, the story, the acting, and the directing are breathtaking.
It will make you smile.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK

The Stalker
A Soviet-era Russian sci-fi masterpiece by Andrei Tarkovsky (most famous for the earlier, weirder, better adaptation of Solaris). It's out on DVD. Prepare yourself for Eastern European pacing (read: S . . . L . . O . . W . . ) but IMHO it's more than worth the intellectual effort.
Otherwise:
Best All Time Screenplay: Woody Allen -- Manahattan
Best All Time Editing: Aliens
Best All Time Cinematography: The Godfather
Best Performance: Meryl Steep in Sophie's Choice (she spoke German with a Polish accent -- don't try that at home!)

Can't believe no one has picked this, Braveheart. This is my favorite movie of all time, it does everything perfectly, action, romance, comedy, tension and a depressing, but at the same time satisfying and somewhat happy ending. William Wallace gets his dream, but it costs him his life.
Lord of the Rings takes a close second, but it's not done yet, I don't consider this as three movies, it's really one loooong movie. Also, there was just something amazing about Braveheart no matter how good LOTR ends up being when it's finally finished in November next year (when it's truely done, with the extended edition of ROTK out).

Life As A House, probably... I'm sure my view is biased on this, but I do like most of the movies that Johnny Depp has been in... a lot. Even if he wasn't dead sexy, like in Fear and loathing in Las Vegas. That made me laff.
