Alright. So, The Digital Bits does indeed report that Lucas may have made his extensive changes to the Original Trilogy of Star Wars that's coming to DVD. But I think we should write a letter requesting two things. They connect to each other (if A is done, B must be done, and A is very important to me).

A) That we only have one box, or the bonus features besides the versions of the film remain the same.

I do have interest in this box, but if Lucas does it the way jpdill says, I'll have to buy the damn box set twice, and I don't really want to, but I don't want to not get to at least see what Lucas has done once.

I suppose if he insists on making two boxes, then he should at least give us the same bonus features. Otherwise that's more stuff that some of us who don't like what he's doing will miss out on.

B) That the completely new scenes, shot during Episode I and II be presented optionally, as an alternate play version.

If he is indeed updating the effects, I want to see this without being required to watch the sequences on the highly likely chances that I don't like them. I hate the prequels, and others to do too (check out "Episode I and II: Balance if you want to read how I propose to fix them).

Anyway...I figure we should try a snail mail campaign to Lucas. Maybe someone else on the board is willing to help out...as of last time I checked, my poll did confirm that people basically do not like the 1977 over the original cuts (most of them had no preference), and that it is the general consensus that both versions should be on the DVD. Come on, people...

1) The Original Version will be on this Archival Edition. Lucas is a business man, so if by having the originals on there will imporve sales, he'll do it. It's not like he has to do anything with them - they'd be 2.0 audio, so he doesn't need to do anything other than pop them on a disk.

2) Lucasfilm have comfirmed that the originals will be on DVD - and seeing how Lucas yesterday revealed he WON'T be doing anything else with the originals after Episode III, i guess this release will be the only one he's doing for it.

Also, i think i've found a Lucasfilm worker on the boards...

I won't tell you their name, but when i know for certain, i'll PM him/her about it.

But I'm not asking for the Originals, I'm asking for the sets with the "Archival" cuts and the "Original/SE" if there are separate boxes, as you've said, to contain the same special features, so I don't have to buy both boxes to get all the bonus material.

My second demand is that if he refuses and releases two boxes, the truly new sequences that are not in either the SE or 1977 cuts be presented as an alternate cut. On the likely chance I don't like the new scenes, I want to be able to watch the movie without those scenes, but still have the again updated effects.

And again you are wrong. You just do not understand.

There will not be a sub-par transfer or audio track for any Lucasfilm release. Whether you believe it or not, it will make Lucasfilm look bad.

If he does in fact include the originals, then, as I have repeatedly stated, they will be 5.1 audio and include a frame-by-frame restoration. Lucas, Lucasfilm, THX, and fans would not allow the movies to just be "thrown on a disc" as you say. Trust me.

For one thing, the 5.1 audio track for the SE is not wildly different from the originals -- maybe about 10 minutes of difference between the films total. Not only that, but a 5.1 track already exists. Ben Burtt redid the entire soundtrack for the 1993 "Ultimate Edition" Laserdisc that I mentioned -- the picture was also completely remastered.
