Today, November 1st, is apparently delivery day for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
So, is the final part of the trilogy complete. Will it have been signed sealed and delivered to New Line by the end of today?

Of course it will...
PJ is a miracle worker!
The theactical version or return of the King is in the can. But IMO it won't be complete until the EE is done.

The delivery date I heard was 1st November (which is actually about a week later than delivery for FOTR and TTT). I suspect that if required they could delay it around 1 week, but no longer.
After completion it has to be sent to ratings boards for approval, this takes around 1 week. It then takes around 1 month to get all the prints created and distributed. Therefore the absolute latest date for completion has to be 5 weeks prior to release. The worldwide release is 17th December 2003 (11.00pm on the 16th for 'Trilogy Tuesday'), so it can be no later than the end of the 1st week in November in any event.
The World Premier is 1st December, and I read that on the 5th November a top executive of AOL/Time Warner will be getting an advanced screening.

well if the running time is not yet set in stone like coming soon! reported, then that pretty much means the film isnt quite finished yet......

The cinematic version of Return of the King is completed but i heard that Peter Jackson is going to bring back some of the cast to New Zealand to film extra scenes which may include the scouring of the shire or Frodo Sam Merry and Pippin in the old forest in the fellowship of the ring but im not entirely sure its true it could be a rumour
Isiden
ps could someone help me get a lotr avatar plz i dont no how!!

Even if everything wasn't 100% finished, and they needed another couple of days, I'd be sure that they would actually have a final cut with the exact running time.
Once scoring is underway they have to have a pretty much final edit, any changes and finishing touches (SFX etc) will simply be done within that cut. Minor changes can occur, but that would only likely affect final run times by a few minutes.

Don't get you're hopes up Isidien. There was a rumour around a month ago that some of the cast may be going back to NZ next year, but if they are then it won't be to film any new scenes. Billy Boyd said as much in a report recently I believe.
There may be some minor additional shooting for the EE, though I doubt even that frankly. If any of the cast are going back it will likely just be for interviews etc for the EE features.
Definitely no scouring.

i dont think its in the can at all. apparently there is no running time at all yet so that leads me to beleive the film is still not finished.

im quite disapointedi would have thought the scouring of the shire would have been very entertaining to watch i was annoyed when i heard it wouldnt be in return of the king either

same thing mentioned a lot of times...i do i agree with PJ that its really a anti-climax..and it wont fit into the film really..
downflow311
11-01-2003, 12:24 PM
i dont think it would either. galadriel's mirror is the closest you'll get to seeing a scouring of the shire. its extremely anti-climactic.

11-01-2003, 12:26 PM
and with the scouring ROTK might go all the way to 4 hrs...i dont think a lot of ppl would wanna sit thru a 4 hr long movie...decreasing the box office..
downflow311
11-01-2003, 12:27 PM
yup, i agree. i think even the supposed 3.5 hr running time may hurt ROTK's BO. most people who arent fans might think it'd be better to wait until its on DVD cause its so long.

Definitely, no Bombadil and Scouring where the right decision for the films.
As for the whether the film is 'in the can' or not, I'm only going by the original delivery date given. We know that to make the worldwide release of 17th December they can't have anymore than about 1 week.

im sure its finished for the most part, but maybe not quite finished yet. all i know is it better be ready for trilogy tuesday or im gonna be pissed;)
Isidien
11-01-2003, 01:20 PM
true that neither bombadil nor scouring fit in the film but i thought that they were rather interesting parts in the book and i would have liked to have seen them on the EE but PJ knows what hes doing it doesnt affect the film in the long run

Now that we are in the final days of the production team working on the theatrical cut (if it's not already completed), I almost feel slightly sad. I know it sounds daft, but we've been waiting for the screen adaptation of LOTR for years, and ever since FOTR opened we've been following the project intently for nearly a further 2 years.
All the rumours and reports, the spoiler pictures, the teaser posters and the trailers, and now we are coming to the beginnning of the end of this journey. No more re-shoots, no more storyline decisions, no more ADR or scoring. The end of this remarkable project is almost upon us.
Let's hope that the film reel that is about to be signed off by New Line within the next 7-10 days, will be a masterpiece that is fitting to finale The Lord of the Rings. :)
I try to convince myself that we are still only haflway through this LOTR movie experience:
FOTR
FOTR EE
TTT
<--- we be here
TTT EE
ROTK
ROTK EE
Still lots of fun left :D

All in a days work. :)
Don't want everyone getting to excited after what has been in many ways a year of disappointments at the cinema. The 5th of November is already looking a little less promising than before, so we don't want the same fate to befall ROTK.

i dont think that those 2 films are even in the same league. but i agree, this year has been a year of disappointments. though i think ROTK can rise to the top. i think you would really have to [i]try[/i[] to make this a bad movie. the source material is so good and PJ's vision is so precise how could it not be?

ROTK will rise to the top. matrix doesn't have the same scope, and they're 2 completely different genres

Plus, don't forget a POSSIBLE The Hobbit film. Add that on and we're good to go! :D

that is the best way of thinking of it.
how many people out there remember seeing the first trailer, which had the fellowship walking over the ridge past that big rock (the first trailer) when they put up the titles FOTR: Christmas 2001, TTT: Christmas 2002 ROTK: Christmas 2003, and thinking that it's gonna be sooo damn long till we see ROTK?

the fact is that once ROTK comes out, we will have only the EE to look forward too--and then of course the compilations, the director's specials, year after year, perhaps. but what we have had here is that so many fans have come together and really supported this venture. We've come closer together--even if it's only on these boards. And maybe someday we'll get the Hobbit.

but i doubt that there will be director's specials

i just saw a new tv ad for the ROTK game, and it had about 45 seconds of movie footage in it. 5 seconds of it was new, showed catapults launching on minas tirith. it was bad ass. so keep a look out if your watching tv!!!!

I'll admit that when I heard that they were making the trilogy, I was split on it. I didn't want to see FOTR, have it ruin what I had pictured in my head, and then I couldn't enjoy the books anymore. But I saw it, and I loved it, and now I'm glad that PJ and New Line allowed Tolkien's vision be realised on the big screen. I'm greatful it's happening in my time, especially with all the outstanding technology out there for visual effects. I don't know if I feel closer to other LOTR fans (i.e. you guys), but I know that once it's over then it'll be like a piece of history that I lived through and can only reminisce about.
But behind these EE's, we will outlast them!

TORn has posted a story saying that in Sweden, ROTK received an R from the ratings board. Subsequently, they are going to remove one scene from it to drop it down a level. But what really matters is that, if the ratings board has the movie, it must be finished and in the can. :D
PsYkOoOoO

what scene can that be?and that scene will only be removed in sweden right?
