View Full Version : Was Gondolin Gondor in another age?

I've never read the Silmarillion, so...was it? And if not, where in ME the kingdom was located? I know this has nothing to do with the films, but it's something that has been lingering in my mind for quite some time. Thanks in advance.

no it was not. gondolin along with nagrothond were the fortresses of the high elves when they came back with feanor to wrestle back the silmarils. both were the destroyed.

Gondolin was the last main kingdom of the elves to fall to Morgoth. It was hidden in the mountains, and only through a traitorous elf was it revealed. I think Tuor fought and killed like 5 balrogs, but I don't remember if he lived or not (probably not). Gothmog, the king of the balrogs, was killed there by Glorfindel (who in Tolkien's notes, was resurrected and is the same Glorfindel who meets Strider in FOTR).
It along with the other kingdoms in the Silmarillion were located west of the Blue Mountains. If you have a ME map, find the Shire, then look left of it. After the final battle when the Lords of the West came and threw Morgoth down, the land was drownded by the sea. So most of Beleriand (which is what that land was called) is now under the ocean.
Hope that clears some stuff up for ya. :)

anyone have a map of ME before Morgoth was overthrown, ie, with Beleriand not flooded or something similar?

I don't think there is one. There are 2 maps of Beleriand in the Silmarillion, but if you just have the LOTR map of ME, then I guess just imagine the land stretching out about 3 inches to the left, and some to the north. That's how I pictured it anyway.

Search the net. I once found a map of Middle Earth WITH Beleriand, they way things would have been before the flooding, so you saw how it all once would have fit together.

Thanks to everybody, especially Turin Turambar, for answering my call...I'm now more than interested in the Silmarillion, and may read it after I finish reading The Return of the King. I've been told that the Fall of Gondolin kicks Pelennor Field's ass in terms of scale...I would like to confirm that for myself when I read it.
Thanks again. :applaud:

Welcome!
But I don't know if the Fall of Gondolin was on a larger scale than the Pellenor Fields, but the final battle of the first age... that was my favorite!

i think that ecthelion killed gothmog and the scale was much much larger than at pellenor fields.
