View Full Version : Info About Return Of The King And Sauron!!! (big Spoilers)

This comes from AICN-D:
Okay, so last week we printed the ROTK running time, which was all cool and funky and quoted in other places. In further conversations with the NZ Spy Network, it became clear that it was the running time *at the moment*. They are still shooting footage for the film, things are still being added. The 3 ˝ hour running time is what it is at the moment. But it was made clear that it’s unlikely to be any shorter than that, so our scooper Mr Fusion has done good.
I mention, because Mr Fusion sent in some more info about a sequence that wound up the end of the film (sort-of spoilers coming)............ It seems that Aragorn is to fight Sauron, all dressed up in the armour that we saw Sauron in during the FOTR prologue. Sauron comes out of the Blake Gates, whips the bejesus out of Aragorn, and is about to do him in when Frodo does what he does and saves the day. Now, PJ took some liberties with TWO TOWERS, so I was willing to believe this to be the truth. But just to be on the safe side, I checked with others in the know.
According to regular scooper Johnny Bartlett, that was the case about three years ago (When principle photography ended, by the way!). Johnny mentioned that battle did indeed feature in earlier draft of ROTK, and he assumed that’s the info Mr Fusion is working off of.
Then, information came through from super-spy Dr Lynskey. He tells us that, “Sauron DOES NOT APPEAR IN PHYSICAL FORM at the end of the film”, and goes on to hint that there’s a good chance Aragorn will fight something big at the end... Unfortunately, due to the hippopotamus oath Dr L took when he signed up for fake medical school, he decided not to say what it was that Aragorn fights (considering that piece of information would spoil something that actually *is* in the final film, he opted for “classy”).
So, there you go: a taste of what could have been, and a murky promise of the potential for a fight scene! Who says we don’t deliver?

So, there was some truth to that TORN rumour about Sauron fighting Aragorn at the black gates and Frodo saving him at the last minute. It seems though that PJ has changed his mind on the matter, which for me is probably a good thing
The big question is though: What BIG thing is Aragorn supposed to fight? Any suggestions?
As for the running time, it seems that we most likely we are going to get out 3:30 hours ROTK theatrical cut!!!

Does anyone else think that running time "at the moment" thing sounds kinda fishy? I think I'd cry if that is really "the at the moment length" before they are finished cutting. The EE would end up about same as TT... 3hrs. 45 min. Absolutely horrifying!

I wouldn't worry about the running time, ROTK the theatrical version will have a running time that will be satisfactory. Just remember what PJ said,"ROTK will be the longest of the 3 films..."
I can imagine the running time having an odd number like 3hr 23 minutes or 3hr 27 minutes.
Also factor this: If NL was really concerned about the film being too long, then I think they would have told PJ and PJ along with the rest of the crew would have backed off on the pick-ups along time ago.

I agree with Jedi. But the most common and reliable reports do state the running time to clock in around 3.5 hrs, and Jedi seems to agree with that.

He might extend the role of The Mouth of Sauron as in the books this guy only has a few taunting lines and then dissappears. PJ might make the guy fight.

The mouth of Sauron will have a decent role in ROTK...

jedi, after all is said and done, are you finally gonna tell us who your connections are and how you know all this stuff? or are we gonna be hidden behind the smokescreen forever?

i don't want to see Sauron fight, but MoS would be cool, but could lead to some confusion, if the armour is similar, as some people say that it is.

Maybe after THE HOBBIT is made into a feature film and is released on DVD in a theatrical version and extended version...

I dont think Aragorn should fight anything besides orcs in the battle at the black gate.

I THINK- I THINK that the might fight an army of trolls or some other large creatures at the black gates. I say this, because check out the scene of aragorn in front of the gates- the characters behind him move a bit, and you can see they are a bit large, and their movement is staggered a bit.
All that from half a second of footage ;)
Remember, Boromir said "it's black gates are guarded by more than just orcs. There is an evil there that does not sleep."
of course I might just be seeing htings

at what time? good point about what boromir said

I thought The Evil That Does Not sleep was Those gargoyle creatures that could prevent things from passing them by and Samn had to use his trinket to get past them.

Well, Sauron was also the lord of the werewolves, so maybe Aragorn will tangle with one of them? That or some dragon-like creature, to cap off the epic battle.
Didn't PJ say that they had 4 hours of footage, and he wanted it to be cut back to 3 hr 15 min? If it ends up being 3 hr 30 min, I still think there will be plenty for the EE, so no worries there.

It's Black Gates are guarded by more than just orcs
I think he simply is talking abour Uruks and Trolls and stuff, and
there is evil there that does not sleep
is Sauron or Sauron's Eye.

I tempted now to be very sceptical of this 8000th rumour of Sauron/Aragorn confrontation. Hardly dealing with Sauron 'pretty much like in the book'.

I was just thinking, daft thoughts maybe, but a possibility I suppose -
We have seen pictures of Arwen in Lothlorien by Galadriel's mirror. (How these treks between Rivendell/Lothlorien work out I've never known, being that you have a huge mountain in the way, but let's assume that's in ROTK).
Could it be that just as Frodo saw the Scouring of the Shire in the mirror, Arwen could see and vision of Aragorn vs Sauron. This 'may not come to pass' but could be a powerful enough image to prompt Arwen to ask to Elrond to 'give him the sword of the king'.
Just a thought.

That would be great. Then it could explain those shots being filmed. They'll probably make it so Arwen sees Aragorn getting his arse kicked and very near death when the image stops and she wants to give him the sword. I think that would be one of the best ideas if they do it.

Well, there is supposed to be a scene where Arwen approaches the shards of narsil and she sees a vision of Aragorn being killed in battle, the vision is supposed to happen on the blade of the broken sword.
The trailer did show Arwen aproaching the shards of Narsil...

That scene was orginally in the trailer for Two Towers that they put on the end of FoTR in March of 2002.

Which way would you guys like it . . . I mean, obviously a bout w/ Sauron would be cool, but I loved the books and I think that would be deviating too much from them. Your thoughts?

I don't mind my idea, but I don't want an actual fight between Aragorn and Sauron near the end. Like a computer games 'final boss fight'. It would be going totally against the story simply for those inthe audience that might consider it 'cool', and would be incredibly cheesy IMO.
PJ says that they've handled it similarly to the books so I am inclined to believe we won't have any daft 1 on 1 fight at the the Black Gates.

You have a good point there. I don't really want to see that fight for some reason. But the Arwen thing should be neat, I think.

if they really want an Aragon/Sauron fight I would be happy with a mental (but looking physical) fight when Aragon uses the Palantir to reveal himself.........anything else would go aganist everything Tolkien wrote...

Richard taylor said that they have another week of pickups to do, and i think that he said that it has to be ready for delivery on the 1st of November, which seems really early
here it is from TORn
Radagast sends in this direct quote from WETA frontman Richard Taylor. Seems the team down in New Zealand are going for perfection in their third outing! Take a look!
RICHARD TAYLOR: Another week has just been added to filming the pick-ups and we now still have two weeks to go. We have to deliver the complete film in five weeks (Nov. 1st) and because we're still filming, it's a bit tight. Peter is still in London, editing the film while doing the orchestral music with Howard Shore, and every day he corresponds with Weta Digital and the other departments, by video conferencing, to keep the machine going forward. He'll be coming back to Wellington in early October.
Meanwhile the second-unit directors are directing the acting on set, because there's a necessity to get more and more detail. I think it's admirable that both Peter and New Line are willing to push it to the limit. Considering they've had such a huge success with the first two films, there might be a natural tendency to rest up a little bit, but never, ever would Peter do that, and now he has pushed to make the third film the greatest film he could ever have created. That's required him putting a huge effort into getting the film as heavy in textural detail as he possibly can get, in order to keep the integrity of the overall visuals going.

1st November seems about right because they'd have to get it to and from the censors and NL to check over before producing the final 'reel' (or whatever it is) don't they.
I'd have thought that they'd have potentially another 1 or 2 weeks if they really had to push it, because while the World Premiere is on the 1st December, the wordlwide release isn't until the 17th, when all the 1000's of copies have to be produced and distributed.

I wonder what they are still filming? None of the main actors are in New Zealand so I guess it must just be extras...

it is extras. they had a thing on the NZ news about a week ago, and it said that they were just filming some more scenes with extras, and we saw 2 sitting around, and they were in battle armour
