Character Question,

This is a book question rather than a movie question, sorry about that but it was really bugging me!

At the council of Elrond in FOTR Tolkien says Frodo sees "a strange elf, clad in green and Brown, the colours of Mirkwood -" bla bla bla. (I dont have the book with me for refrence). So why does Tolkien discribe Legolas as "strange"? Theres nothing there to really set him appart from the other elves at the council or wlves in general, so whats the deal?

I thought someone might have some ideas.

I think perhaps Tolkien means "strange" in the sense that he is not familiar to Frodo...he has just arrived, he is from a different place and a different line of elves, and is clearly not of Rivendell as his trappings would indicate.

If you want to get technicial, at that point in the story, ALL elves would be "strange" to Frodo, since Frodo has never really seen elves close before.

Actually, you forgot about meeting Glorfindel and the other wandering elves in the Shire woods...so, yes, Frodo was familiar with the elves. I think it really was just a matter of Legolas not being familiar, not that Legolas was "freaky" or anything :)

yeah. the wood elves would have imprinted an elf to look like that in his head, so he would expect others to be like that too. just a bit of a change.

maybe its because the mirkwood elves are just different..and if im not wrong they ARE different from elves from other regions..

yeah, he would be "strange" in that sense, but there was a contingent of elves from Mirkwood, as well as all the elves from Imladris, Frodo wouldn't have seen them all at the feast the night before either.
