You know what I've noticed about this board and its die hard LOTR fans? 90% of you are jerks. I constantly see you jump all over people for posting a picture that you've seen already. How are they supposed to know if you've seen it? They're only trying to get involved and are trying to contribute something to the discussion. But you guys get rude and pissy right away. "There's no reason to post this picture!!!!" "Why did you start a new thread, idiot" These types of attitudes, in my opinion are rude, immature and completely uncalled for. As if a newbie, or just someone who wants to post a picture, is should be expected to search through the HUNDREDS of pages of LOTR info, just to see if a certain picture is posted.
I am targeting a few people in particular, but I'm not going to name names. That wouldn't be right either. But you know who you are.
I just want to say: grow up, get some class, stop being jerks and treat people with the same respect that you would like to be treated.

Wahayyy, I've been asigned 'Jerk Status' - can I get my av position changed? I'm fed up of being director. :D
I can understand your point Kris, as I'm sure can everyone else, but you could try and look at it from the other side as well. I made my own little rant about this a few weeks back when things were really getting pretty ridiculous, and making the board almost unusable to an extent for regulars, or at the very least, seriously irritating. I genuinely considered leaving there and then because it was becoming a waste of time posting anything.
Sure the 'banishment parchment' thread is IMO totally different to this, and I think that case there you could say we were being slightly over-zealous. :o
If you didn't have regular posters though this place would become pretty irrelevant an a source of little debate or information. Why not just delete all the threads after every other day if you can't expect to users to actually bother looking through them before posting new threads.

I can see your point as well adt, but all it takes is a little link to the original pic. I think there are alot of posters that get scared away because they get treated like crap when they're newbies. These are people that could be great posters, but quit before they start because they think we're jerks here. I'm quite happy here, and I think Coming Soon is one of the best message boards in the entire internet. Everybody (for the most part) gets along great, we don't have NEAR the spamming problems that alot of boards do and there is always tons of info on here. It just seems that when people act overly hostile towards people just starting out, it's the same thing as standing at the gate, swinging a sword around, if you know what I mean.

I can imagine at times it could be quite daunting for certain 'newbies', we were all in that position once of course. These things come in phases though. I mean, in that period last month, when all the new pics and information was coming out, it was just getting ridiculous, and you understand regulars just getting more and more p***ed off which can lead to posts being perhaps unitentionally aggressive. It's hard to be all nice and friendly all the time when some newbies pay absolutely no attention to threads that are already filling the first page, and show no respect to exisiting users.
Most users though will not gernerally come to a board like this, immediately become a member and start posting, then if they get a negative response leave never to return. The kind of poster that, as you say, could become great posters and valuable members of the community will likely spend a while just browsing the threads before they actually join and start posting, and therefore will get a general feeling of the board over time. They will also realise the topics that are regularly posted and talked about.
I suppose it depends on what kind of message boards your used to using. Take a look over at TORC for example, and you'll see that we are quite light hearted in these matters in comparison. :)

Agreed. This board is very tame compared to some. But that's the way it should stay in my opinion. With some of the posts I've seen lately, it almost seems to be taking a turn towards those other boards. All I'm saying is Peace and tolerence are the key. I know it can get really irritating when someone posts the same thing over and over but, like I said before, just providing a link to the other pic is the diplomatic and peaceful way to handle it.
I do applaud your willingness to discuss this with a mature attitude. I was expecting the diehards to gang up and crucify me. Maybe that will happen yet. :)

You know, to some extent I agree. I have been a member for a quite a while, and I hardly ever post. Not because I don't have anything to say, but because I for one am afraid to say something that has already been said and get jumped for it. I read this board every night, and I don't really care about the repeat pictures. Honestly, it only takes a second to tell if you have seen it before or not. I would rather have someone post something they are not sure about than miss something really good because someone was afraid to post it.

The thing is to be respectful, if I see a pic that has been posted I let the poster know in a nice way and I always give this ending:
"thanks for looking out..."
That way they know their effort is appreciated.
IMO, I think everyone is on a short fuse since the day we had found out that there would be no official release of a teaser trailer and now there is an uncertain vibe in reguards to the theatrical trailer.
Just be PATIENT, it will come. I promise. Try not to take your frustration out on other members.

Yes, but everyone has a breaking point as it were. It's sometimes hard to be so polite and respectful all the time (in life as well as on these boards, as pleasant as it would be if we all were like that). I still think that it is a two-way street, give and take on both sides.

I totally agree with Kris. People need to be more respectful. I remember when I started posting here I got jumped at for starting a thread that had already been started 10 pages back and it almost made me not want to come here again. Try and be civil and have some patience. There's no need to scare people from posting here.

I think u got the figures wrong, cause there are only a few jerks not 90%. The one thing i like about the LOTR board is that ppl really know what they're talking about.
I dont think u can condemn a whole board because of a few outbursts.

Thanks for pointing out what a huge jerk I am, Kris. I didn't realize it before, and now I'm going to change my ways and be extra considerate to everyone, forever and ever...
No, but I am a jerk. :) However, I do see your point. I know when I was new, I really tried to only contribute when I knew I was posting something new, or relevant. I would have hated to have someone jump all over me over a double-post... But, while I feel sorry for those people who just make a mistake, they should still use SOME caution and take just a LITTLE effort before posting...
Anyway, in conclusion, I am a huge jerk. We should be nicer, and other posters should be smarter and not so lazy.

Yeah, I agree that a lot of newbies get struck down the moment they first post. I got lucky and I didn't get that reaction from the regulars. I guess I just post sporadically (sp?) enough that I don't get any backlash lol (hopefully people think I'm somewhat of a useful source here!). Unless there's a killer topic that I jump right on. But I think now that people read this thread, the newbs won't get yelled at as much....hopefully :).

You know, I don't care if someone starts the same thread with the same picture 500 times if it means we are getting new members interested in Tolkien. Not everyone is as familiar with the way these things work, and rather than having every post that is a repeat answered with a cryptic IS this on topic? or This has already been seen, it would be nice if a couple of people just extended a little common courtesy. And were maybe a little more welcoming. What about the poor guy a week or so ago who started a thread because he was new here and wanted to introduce himself? Maybe not totally appropriate but cut him some slack. He was excited. A lot of things and people here are getting way too fanatical and unforgiving. Cut people some slack and let them be excited for a change.

Thanks for the reminder, Kris, because as a month-long member, I can totally relate to feeling kind of embarrassed about some of the things I've said because I'm afraid of being slammed. One thing I do love about this board, though, is that we're one of the most personality conscious. And no doubt, with your warning, we'll get the message with repeat posters in no time. :)

I see your point and everything but if you see how almost 10 newbies to the LOTR board started posting in BUNCHES about almost the same things about a week or 2 ago... if you saw how many of the same thread we had then you would know what i mean... it just got way out of hand. Now its fine tho... they are all good now.

Kris, people should look around before they post. The reason people jump on that is because it happens so darn much. No one takes the time to look at all the pages before creating a new thread about an old subject. It's a pain in the ass for mods and forum members alike.
And why single out this board? It happens everywhere on the Internet.
I'm new around here and I am certainly not the most knowledgeable about LOTR. But I only post when I have something good to say.
And if you were targeting specific members, why didn't you PM them, instead of starting a whole new thread like this? :D ;)

Exactly... this happens in every board... even in your community board Kris... this is not just LOTR fans. If people cant take the time to look for a thread there about to make then they deserve to be yelled at.

It's a pain in the ass for mods and forum members alike.Ok, I have recently had the pleasure of being targeted myself. Your above point makes sense, and makes it difficult for newbies and regulars alike. But is a common phenomena on boards everywhere.
However, it should go both ways. Being a regular should in no way grant you leeway to overlook these basic rules of conduct yourself. The initial response to my thread (you know which one), was a regular who seemed to jump at the opportunity to bash another newbie for posting an old picture, yet he showed no signs of having taken even a minimum of time to read what it was all about.
Secondly, some regulars seem to feel obliged to make an appearance in every single thread, and comment on everything nomatter if they have an interest or anything of value to add to the topic. If a thread is indeed unworthy of your attention, then by all means stay clear of it instead of turning to insults and ridicule. Threads tend to die on their own, and I for one do not feel particularly special by attracting the attention of regulars.
Thirdly, postcount does not (/should not) mean a thing. Some of you seem to behave as if this is a chatroom rather than a messageboard. It clogs up the board, and does not help you regulars keeping track of things. Personally, I think all indications of "rank" should be removed from the board, as it will inevitably tempt some to see it as a competition regarding who can achieve the highest rank. Incidentally, those are quite often the same people who have little else to show for it. Regulars would know who is who anyway.
So, that was the rant of the newbie. I am going to respond to my parchment-thread later when I get the time. PsYkOoOoO, you are very free to consider it a stupid argument, but also similarly free to stay out of it. I do not know what your problem is with this, but do not make it mine.

and i agree people should chec kto see if a thread has already been created BUT don't jump up people's asses for posting a picture if you don't like them being reposted then go through all of the picture pages and find out where they are and ask a mod to make a "for this pic go here"

Yeah, how can you slam people for reposting pics? It's a contridiction. You say that people aren't obeying the rules of the forum by cluttering it up, yet you aren't obeying the rules either, by being rude to them. This shouldn't be a big debate. I don't understand what the difference is if a newbie or a regular posts nonsense...it is still nonsense. And the spam hurts "newbies" and "regulars" alike.
Hell, I am a newbie on this board, but I do practice some awareness.
Imagine us all being in a big room. If Member A stands up and talks about a certain topic, and after he is done talking Member B proceeds to get up to say exactly what Member A just said. You see why it angers a lot of people?

Well, walking in and calling everyone a jerk is a great way to solve it.
I agree there are trolls here. There are also trolls on other boards, but I haven't played anyone like that, and I get a little upset when someone I don't know just rolls in and starts calling me "jerk". So I'm not a die hard fan, a lifelong member, or a 4-digit poster. I come by here on my rounds of internet boards, this being the only one LOTR related, just to hear what's up and maybe contribute a little bit.
I don't have to please anyone. This board is for fun, it's not a way of life. I don't like being talked to that way by anyone face to face, and I sure as hell don't like it from God knows how far away by someone who doesn't even know me.
