Why is it that it seems that every Movie ever made seems to have a Sequel? I mean, some movies are meant to like Star Wars and The Matrix and a few others but it seems as though any movie that makes 50+ million gets a Sequel.

Why

I like sequels. I have no problem with them unless they're awful.

I remember hearing about a sequel in the works for Se7en. Now that's scary.

As I said in another thread, Hollywood execs. are too scared to take a chance on new material. They would rather have a bad sequel of a proven success than take a chance at something new.

That said there are some good sequels, usually when a sequel was planned from the beginning (star wars, matrix, lord of the rings). Some slasher movie sequels are pretty good, well at least as good as the original (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elmstreet).

Overall, most sequels are poor imatations of the original.

There is absolutly no reason to make a sequel for this movie because it just wouldn't work

Oh, God. I read at IMDB that Morgan Freeman will return as Somerset to crack a case about a guy with "psychic ablities." That could possibly prove to be the worst movie ever. They should just leave the greatness of the first alone.

why does Freeman always get these **** detective roles? I'm sure he enjoyed it the first time, but come on...I hate to see a fine actor be type-casted

anyway, Hollywood is so scared to take chances, so if a movie is a hit, you can bank on it that there will be a sequel. But its not all the blame lay on the Execs. Yes, they are greedy, and go for sure-thing crap movies, rather than take a chance on something that might be special, but its not all their faults. Part of it is the fact that they have to pay SOOO much money to the actors nowadays. It drives the budgets of some films so high...take a look at a film like "Fight Club", I think it actualy ended up losing money at the box office, because Brad Pitt had to have his 25 million dollars.

they are making sequels to bad films that is the problem. not trying to offend anyone who liked the first films of charlie's angles, or tomb raider, but i thought they were just bad films. they didn't need a sequel at all. but most people i know liked the movie potc, and wants to see a sequel to that movie, especially since you can tell they were planning a sequel based on the title. they wouldn't have added the curse of the black pearl to the title if they already weren't planning one.

Hollywood does sequels because they're a better bet to make money. But you're right, sequels should only be made to good movies (Terminator) or movies intended to begin stories (Star Wars, Matrix, LOTR). There's no excuse for sequels to horrible movies (Tomb Raider, Bad Boys, etc.) or movies for which sequels just don't make sense (Gladiator or Se7en). And now that I've spoken out, I expect the industry to change.... Still waiting....

Production studios know sequels equal money. Period. Even if a movie sucks and the character in it is goofy if enough people like it and want to see more then the studio will gladly give it to them if it means more money in their purses.

Personally I like sequels as a way of seeing further development of a character or to see the further adventures of said character.

For example: Spiderman. The first movie dealt a lot with with his developing powers and sense of responsibility. I would hope the next movie would show us a more mature and able-bodied Peter Parker. We got a glimpse of this at the end of the first movie when he fought Green Goblin for the last time.

Anyways, yeah.
