Another fave of mine, and a classic trio of Japanese horror films that were quite violent for their time (mid 60's.)
Essentially, Majin is the wrath of God himself, embodied in a giant stone statue sitting on top of a hill in a lush valley. He is a called to life by the cries of the oppressed, and once he comes to life, he cannot be stopped, and those he moves against are utterly crushed by his anger.
I recently got the trio of films all on DVD for $24.95 and the quality is quite nice. Allegedly, there is a green light for Daiei films (Gamera's old company) to do a new DaiMajin film. But the attention to historical detail in feudal Japan, the atmospheric sets, and the ever haunting music of maestro Akira Ifikube make for a true trio of horror classics, even if a bit repetitive and dated.
I'd get the series before they stop making it, and 3 movies for $25.00? You can't go wrong with that..
Daimajin....Ichiban!
