She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb is a great novel about perserverance in a young woman's life. It follows her through her life, the traumatic experiences that happen to her and how it shapes her and how she survives.

Slaughter-house Five by Kurt Vonnegut. If you haven't read it- read it! It's a must read for anyone.

1984 by George Orwell. It parallels so much of society today and what can become in the future if we aren't careful that it's almost scary. A great political novel with a humanistic approach to it.

This is a tough one. I've read SK's "Dark Tower" books so many times I damn near have them memorized, and I'd probably have to put them at the top of my list. But coming in at a close second would be Orson Scott Card's "Speaker For The Dead" series, the whole thing, with "Ender's Game" being my undisputed favorite of the bunch. But I'm also very fond of Jack Whyte's "Camulod Chronicles". Brett Easton Ellis' "American Psycho" is no doubt up there on my list, as well as various things like "The Church Of Dead Girls," "Murder In The Solid State," "Places In The Dark", et cetera et cetera. The list goes on.

i know its an old topic, but here goes anyways:

Stranger in a Strange Land, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress - Heinlein
Hitchhiker's trilogy - Adams
Neverwhere, American Gods - Gaiman
Cats Cradle, Siren of the Titans - Vonnegut (these two beat Slaughterhouse V any day of the week with 2 hands tied behind their back, wearing a blindfold, and hopping on one leg)
The Eight - Neville
Choke, Survuvor - Palahniuk
Da Vinci Code - forget the author

those are just a few of my favorites (in no particular order)

Darkness
06-05-2004, 10:43 AM
The Phantom of the Opera- Leroux
There's always been something about this book for me. Maybe it's because I've always been strongly sympathetic to Erik, I don't know, but I love it.

The Scarlet Pimpernel- Orckzy
Mystery, romance and humor. How do you not love Blakeney?

The Count of Monte Cristo- Dumas
It's a huge book, but watching Edmund extract revenge in a truly inventive and complicated way is worth it.

The Dark Elf Trilogy- Salvatore
I love Drizzt. Horribly out of place in the world he was born into, but not willing to go down without a fight.

The Lord of the Rings- Tolkien
What can I say? Yeah, it's wordy, but it's an entire new world and probably the best fantasy novel ever written.

The Harry Potter Series- Rowling
It made a believer out of me. I thought it was all hype, but when I started reading it I couldn't put them down.

Beowulf or Beowulf a New Telling- Nye
It influenced Tolkien to write the Lord of the Rings and it really is fascinating. I started out hating it, but the more I've read it, the more I enjoy it every time.

Dracula- Stoker
I love vampires and this is the father of all vampire genre tales. Dracula is the first, the best and the baddest. Sure, the modern vampire novel characters are slicker and sexier, but when it comes to being a vampire, Dracula is the most effective.

You see, using that word..well..it kinda spoils your arguement. Now, if you'd said "haven't ever" we might be able to take you seriously. In fact, since you said "ain't never," you're in fact saying that he has read a book. You see, thats what what we like to call a "double negative." I read that in a book.

Sooner ask me to pick a favorite child... (bonus pt if you know what film that's from)
btw people on this website have excellent taste in books.
Well personally, I go for beauty, truth and love all the way. If it's dark, it better have redemption or humor, or else I can appreciate but not love it. Most of my favorites have been named, but for posterity:
Lord of the Rings
Harry Potter (esp last three)
To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee, someone was wondering)
The Chronicles of Narnia
These are old friends that I have read over and over so many times.

Some I haven't seen named here:
Winnie-the-Pooh - why didn't I discover kids books until after I grew up?
The Last Unicorn - This book was so beautiful that I wish so much I hadn't seen the film first.
The Little Prince - I cry every single time.
Merlin by Stephen R. Lawhead - my favorite old-school hero
The Stand by Stephen King - great characters
Beach Music and Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy - Outrageous Southerness that's totally unbelieavable and yet surprisingly close to the mark
Watership Down by Richard Adams - Bigwig and Hazel, great heroes, great adventure

I have to read and love a book at least three or four times before I can call it a favorite, but here are some recent reads of mine with potential:
The Day No Pigs Would Die
The 21 Balloons
Until We Have Faces (CS Lewis)
Idylls of the King
Mama Makes up Her Mind by Bailey White
The Plague Dogs by Richard Adams - heartbreakingly real and far-fetched but beautifully redemptive...
I better stop. but there are so many more, it seems.

I can borrow it from plently of people it is just that I want to get it in paperback so taht it can fit in my backpack when I go down to school. Right now a paperback is the only extra book that would fit in my bag.

I better stop. but there are so many more, it seems.
ho hum. I feel like shamelessly bumping my own post today.

I have a few things to add;
The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis
Shardik, Richard Adams (I am really starting to like this guy. All his books are so different from each other.)
Lady Chatterly's Lover - this is a life-changing book. I seriously think that people who plan to have sex should read this. It really makes you think about the male/female relationship and some things that have sort of gone wrong with it. No it is not a morality tale - but it kind of is. It's about having really good sex the way it's supposed to be had, and I didn't realize how important that was until I read this.
Pavilion of Women by Pearl Buck - because Madame Wu is one of the best-written and interesting protagonists I've ever read.
