View Full Version : So how long do you think ROFTK Will be
tHe_JeKzTaR

Cause i remember hearing some where that Peter Jackson is going throw a 3 hour cut of the movie, a 4 hour cut of the movie and even get this a 5 hour cut of the movie.
I know this movie will be the better of the first two all reports say so and i belive Peter Jackson's word.
But really how long do you think the movie will be cause there are some many great scenes from the book that should or would be in the movie and if the movie starts getting cut back for time limit's do you think it will hurt the movie.
My guess is
A 3 hour movie will be good but a little too short for the last chapter of a classic movie (Freaking when does a person say 3 hours is too short but for this movie i think it will be)
A 4 hour movie could just be the perfect choice this way the audience will be left with all great moments on cinema rather than DVD which i think is best.
A 5 hour movie would be way way too long even die hard fans would have a hard time watching for that long i know i would.
Anyway 2003 is the year for big movie and this one is going to be the best of all of them.

All things considered I think the most likely and most appropriate length for the theatrical cut will be arpund the 3 1/2 hour mark. I expect the extended edition to be between 4 and 4 1/4 hours though!

I want it to be long! I love it so much!
The only thing is, I'm going to need a bathroom installed in the seat, because I can't hold it in that long with all the soda and popcorn.

I've heard for this film they're going up to 3 1/2 to 4 hours. When PJ was first accepted to make these movies, newline told him that each film has to be under 3 hours. I remember reading somewhere since they've made soo much damn money, that Newline dropped that parameter and is letting him go all out for ROTK. It's kinda like they know people love these frickin movies and the old & new fans don't care how long it is. The longer the better..........

I don't mind it being up to 4 hours, as long as they don't have 20 minutes of adverts before the film starts - I doubt that'll happen though. An intermission would be good, because however comfortable the seats are, it can start to get uncomfortable after that long!
I can only remember twice having an intermission, about 12 yrs ago, but they're impractical at modern multiplexes.
I hope it lasts forever!

Yeah, my best friend saw FOTR with me and I was so mad. He kept making these stupid comments that he thought were funny.
I even missed the last of the line of the movie when I yelled at him to shut up.

I don't know how long it will last, but I'm sure the length will vary depending on which members of the crew you ask. If you ask a guy, he'll tell that its twice as long as the actual length. If you ask a woman, she'll tell you that its not even half as long as what the guy says. :) ;)
Of course, what this really means is...I have no idea how long the movie will be! :p

The Prussian Emperor who appointed Bismarck, possibly the greatest politician in the last thousand years, rises from the dead..
Er, excuse me.
A 5 hour cut too long? Man, the night TT came out they had a FotR/TT marathon. 6 hours flew by.
And I think most die-hard fans would sit through a 20 hour movie which mirrored the book exactly. Three of them.

The latest rumour from TORN is indicating over 4 hour running time for ROTK! :D
Personally I'd be happy to sit through that long a film if it meant doing justice to the story, however I do think that for the theatrical cut such length is pushing it a bit far. I'd expected no more than about 3hr 45 for the theatrical, and 4hr 15 for the EE. Of course this rumour is only concerning a rough cut, and I would be pretty surprised if it did reach the 4 hour mark.
It shows though how it might have been better to have kept Shelob and the Smeagol/Gollum transformation in TTT as the book.
"ROTK: 4hour and 20 Minute Running Time?
5/08/03, 2:37 pm EST
The following is from bikkit.com and should be classified as a RUMOR only.
(ROTK) is indeed, far and way better than both Fellowship and Two Towers. It was a 4 hour, 20 minute cut of the film. Feeling that he has proven audiences will gladly sit for 3 hours of quality cinema, Peter Jackson will try to leave the film's 1/6 of a day total time as is."

05-08-2003, 05:16 PM
I wouldn't mind sitting for rotk that long and i don't think people who saw the first two would either as long as there is an intermission of some kind. i seriously think theaters should do that half way through so people don't pass out because its so exciting and they don't want to leave.
And they have to have an intermission for it if they show it on imax like they were thinking because the reels can only hold two hours and need to change part way through.

Yeah, even with modern comfy cinema seating much beyond 2hrs it can start getting a bit uncomfortable. Thing is, with such a long film a lot of cinemas might be unhappy devoting even more time to just 1 showing.

"Here is a report that comes from VERY reliable sources within the LOTR camp. In regards to this story we posted yesterday (which wasn't even our story, it came from another site). Take a look at what our insider has to say:
This is nonsense. They are still cutting the movie and do not know how long it will be, but it definitely won't be 4hrs & 20 minutes, nor should it be" from TORN.

This is the latest news from TORN on the length:
ROTK Running Time: 3hr 10mins?
Ingve writes: According to the biggest newspaper here in Norway, the running time of ROTK will be 3 h 10 min. PJ is working to make his first 4 hour cut into a 3 h 10 min cut. It is confirmed in the article by the LOTR distributor in Norway, SF Norway.
First thoughts, of course, are Noooooooooooooo!, no, no, no, no, NO! :(
That's just not long enough to fit in all that is needed in ROTK, given that so much was chopped from TTT. Hardly making it 'as long as it needs to be', as I thought PJ originally said.
Second thoughts were, how genuine is this? How privy would a Norwegian newspaper be to such information? Having said that, realistically I'd think the final length would actually be getting fairly much decided upon over within the next month or so, given all the SFX work that is being done. It's surely not very efficient to create a film and all the SFX for say 4 hours, if the film will only be 3hrs.
Rizor
05-30-2003, 03:04 PM
Well, I still wouldn't trust 3 hours 10 minutes just yet. There's still a good six months for everything, and who knows what'll happen? Last year several official sources gave us running times, but they all came out false.

With the amount left to fit in, and all the talk of 'however long it needs to be' I seriously thought that it wouldn't come in short of around 3 1/2 hours, with a maximum of 3 hr 45.
I can understand PJ and NL not wanting to go about 3hr 15, because that is a damn long movie anyway, and given the 43 minutes added to TTT EE I would certainly expect the same for ROTK, giving an almost 4 hr Extended cut! My only concern is that quite a bit may have to be cut/merged in the theatrical cut, which won't then really be possible to redeem in the EE w/o dramatically altering the story.

Gone With The Wind (1939) - 3hrs 44 mins
Ben Hur (1959) - 3hrs 33mins
The interesting things to note here are that these 2 films are to are 2 of the most succesful in movie history.
1. Ben Hur won the (equal) most awards Academy Awards of all time 11, Gone With The Wind is 3rd with 10 Oscars.
2. Taking into account inflation, GWTW would still top the worldwide total box office gross of all time.
Now, doesn't that tell PJ something about how well films between 3 1/2 and 3 3/4 hrs can do! :)

Nope. Ben Hur and Titanic both won 11 (clearly the Academy had gone a bit loony in '97). Next up is actually West Side Story with 10, Gigi, The Last Emperor and The English Patient with 9. Gone With The Wind actually only won 8 now I've checked.
Not that Oscars mean all that much of course, (until ROTK sweeps the board next year ;) )

I actually wouldn't mind missing that. It would probably be on the ee anyway. It's not very key to the story. I only picked up on some hints in the book about it. It wasn't given very much focus- almost nonexistent. Now, come to think of it, it's kinda like Aragorn and Arwen's story -how it was barely in the books. We all know how that turned out for the movies....
