Just to keep in touch with the thread I did last year, I'll just go ahead and do another one. :D Here I invite all of you to contribute in a discussion and the posting of DVD news!

Here's the annnouncement, as worded by The Digital Bits:

the 2-disc Theatrical Version will street on August 26th (SRP $29.95) in both full frame and anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) versions. The 179-minute film will feature Dolby Digital 5.1 EX surround sound, with English and Spanish subtitles and English closed captioning. The exact features list includes: 2 in-depth documentaries (On the Set - The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and Return to Middle Earth), Sean Astin's The Long and the Short of It short film, The Making of The Long and the Short of It featurette, 8 production featurettes (Forces of Darkness, Designing the Sounds of Middle-earth, Edoras: The Rohan Capital, Creatures of Middle-earth, Gandalf the White, Arms and Armor, The Battle of Helm's Deep and Bringing Gollum to Life), an exclusive 10-minute preview of The Return of the King, original theatrical trailers and TV spots, the Golllum's Song music video by Emiliana Torrini, a preview of Electronic Arts' Return of the King video game, and a preview of the Two Towers: Special Extended DVD Version. This represents some 2 hours of bonus content.

And, as we mentioned last night, the 4-disc Special Extended DVD Version of the film will follow on November 18th. It's currently in production, so specific features and specs will be announced at a later date. But you can reasonably assume it will be similar in format to the previous 4-disc version of The Fellowship of the Ring. As with that disc, no content will be repeated between the 2-disc and 4-disc versions of The Two Towers, so you'll get your money's worth if you buy both versions. The film will be 30+ minutes longer (we've heard 40+) than the theatrical cut. It will be rated PG-13, and will be presented in anamorphic widescreen video with Dolby Digital and DTS surround sound and audio commentary. It will also feature 2 full discs of all new bonus material.

Wonder if the EE will be red. It'd match the Harper Collins 1999 paperbacks (black cover with green, red, yellow rings in the centre), but the gold written titles on top of a yellow ROTK would look odd.

Incidentally, I notice the 'widescreen' and 'fullscreen' (ie pan & scan butchered) versions of the DVD. Is this a global thing or just the US versions, because I've never seen FOTR in fullscreen version before, and there no such bands along the top of the UK DVD?

Hmmm. looks like better business than last year. :)

Pretty much, I find the 2-dsic set to be typical. The only surprise is the inclusion of Sean Astin's short. Everything is pretty much uniform with what they did last year. The WB's "Return to Middle-Earth" special, Encore/Starz!'s 13-minute "On the Set," the web featurettes and previews. I'll probably rent it save my money for the EE. :)

Here's my DVD thread from last year. http://www.comingsoon.net/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=771 ;)

My bet is that it will be blue ... or green ... or red. One of those anyway! :)

BTW, everyone should experience LOTR in anamorphic widescreen, whether you've got a large TV or not. It's one of those films I can imagine having an awful lot chopped up in full screen pan & scan mode.

I know we gone through this before, and it may seem a bit pedantic, but I really can't understand them making TTT EE red.

Looking at the many book covers for the individual titles, there seem to be 2 running themes in colours: FOTR = Green, TTT = Blue, ROTK = Red or FOTR = Green, TTT = Red, ROTK = Yellow.

Now, watching the general colours and the mood of TTT (ie Helm's Deep, Storming of Isengard, Osgiliath etc), blue would best suit TTT IMO. Equally red would suit ROTK (Pellenor Fields, Mount Doom etc), and the gold titles on red look very 'regal'. An all yellow ROTK could look a bit odd though IMO, with gold title lettering.

The set I have is:

FOTR- Blue
TTT - Red
ROTK - Purple

So according to that, Red for TTT works out just fine. :)

But a purple cover to anything would look horrible.:D

Had a quick check on Amazon and the 'movie covers' publication of the 3-book boxset are green, blue, red, so as first thought, I'm pretty confident these will be the colours of the EE's. :)http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/000714914X.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

Yeah, we're going to have no clue what the three some together would look like until ROTK comes out in theatres. That and it almost bothers me a bit, knowing that they'll probably put out a threesome with some bonus on it, and then all the Extended Version's together with some bonus, so you'll buy it even if you have it. Though, if they put the EV together, I'd buy them like that, since I never have bought one.

Purple would look even worse than yellow IMHO! It was a pretty recent edition (okay, maybe 3 years ago) with art by Ted Nasmith on the cover. It says something like "soon to be a major motion picture from New Line Cinema" on it.

Also, I checked a copy of ROTK out of the library maybe a year ago and it was also purple linen, maybe from a decade ago.

It certainly looks great, better than the green of FOTR, but, my point still stands as before, imagine how fantastic that would have looked with the Return of the King title on! What colour will the make ROTK, it can only be yellow or maybe purple. neither of which will be able to top the red IMHO.

How about Black and Silver like the Gondor flag, that would be cool. But i think it will be blue.

adt100
04-25-2003, 03:36 PM
No, thinking about it, if they can sort out the differentiation in colours/tones between title and background, a deep yellow/gold could look really good if done right.

Black and silver would go totally against the theme, and as I mentioned a few posts back, I just think blue would be totally wrong for ROTK.

You know, anyone else would I'm sure think me really strange to have such an apparent obsession with the colours of the damn case! :o :funny:

DVD Extended Edition Info!
Xoanon @ 2:32 pm EST
Eogwyn writes:
Recently a friend of mine, Colin Duriez, was interviewed by Brian Sibley for the TTT extended DVD, it was a 30 minute piece devoted to the life and work of Tolkien. Colin is a Tolkien expert and has written several books including The JRR Tolkien Handbook, his earliest, which was used as a reference for the piece.

He says the interview lasted several hours and covered a vast range of topics but as the whole piece is only 30 minutes and includes other interviewees (as well as Brian Sibley) he's not sure how much will be used.

He just missed meeting Christopher Lee who was also being interviewd that day for the extended DVD although maybe not the same bit.

A new spy in our legion, Iry sends along this info that he/she/it/they claim to be some of the missing scenes to be added into The Two Towers Extended Edition!
1) Boromir saying goodbye to Faramir and Denethor, a flashback obviously.

2) Faramir sees a ghost or a shadow of Boromir and understands that Boromir died.

3) After destroying the Haradrim, Faramir says: "Interesting, who is he, where is his home, his family. Is there evil in his heart.... why is he travelling so far from home?' (or something like that, dont renember directly)

4) Faramir showing the road from Olgiliath to Sam and Frodo.

This report from USA TODAY who got an early look at the extended version of TTT:

"Bean's ring-craving Boromir, slain at the end of 2001's The Fellowship of the Ring, is resurrected in a lengthy DVD flashback after brother Faramir (David Wenham) finds a boat bearing his body..."

Wyn
06-12-2003, 07:44 AM
Oh wow that sounds brilliant a long flashback of Boromir and Faramir wohoo :D
I soooooo cant wait for the EE!!

PsYkOoOoO
06-12-2003, 07:46 AM
and also,

Not only is there more Bean to savor, but the twisted emotional ties that ensnare ruler Denethor (New Zealand actor John Noble, who officially joins the cast in King), his favorite son, Boromir, and scapegoat Faramir also are exposed. The scenes also help explain why the noble Faramir is rather rude when he meets heroic hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin).

Other DVD additions to the middle tale that heighten the drama and lighten the mood:

• Rohan horseman Eomer (Karl Urban) finds his mortally wounded cousin Theodred and brings him home, where his subsequent death goes all but unnoticed by his spell-stunned father, King Theoden (Bernard Hill).

• The plight of Eowyn (Miranda Otto), Eomer's sister, deepens as she sings a mournful dirge during Theodred's funeral. Meanwhile, her unrequited passion for visiting warrior Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) is further inflamed when he tames an unruly horse by whispering sweet nothings in Elvish.

• There are more tree treats as the once-truncated encounter between ancient Treebeard the Ent and hobbits Pippin (Billy Boyd) and Merry (Dominic Monaghan) stretches its limbs. At one point, Treebeard's droning rumble of a voice causes the halflings in his branches to become drowsy.

• Jackson injects much fun with food and beverage. Eowyn, not especially deft in the kitchen, serves Aragorn a vile-looking bowl of homemade stew, which he politely chokes down. Boromir and Faramir share a couple of victory brews, and one declares in beer-ad fashion, "Today, life is good." Pippin and Merry greedily guzzle the magical elixir known as Ent-draught, adding inches to their wee stature.

The most surprising revelation in the longer Two Towers? That hale-and-hunksome Aragorn is 87 years old. Maybe it's something in that stew.

hey jedi, what about helm's deep...the report did not say anythng about it....are u sure that helm's deep will be 20 minutes longer?

JEDI5150
06-12-2003, 12:21 PM
It will be longer, you have to remember that it will be tough to tell because the new scenes will be interlaced with other scenes, it won't 20 minutes straight.

Latest LOTR DVD news -

'A tiny bit of info on the Two Towers DVD. At the DVD in 50 Conference we learned that Peter Jackson has held back some exceptional stuff from the first two Extended Edition DVDs which is slated for inclusion in the final Return of The King Extended Edition. This was done in an effort not to spoil the third film for movie goers before it was released. One scene which was at one point part of The Two Towers Extended Edition (a flash back to the creation of Gollum) has been actually pulled from the Extended Edition DVD to be used in actual upcoming theatrical release for The Lord of The Rings - The Return of The King. One very encouraging note for Lord of the Rings fans who have bought or are planning to buy the Extended Editions - New Line has stated that they are not going to punish loyal fans who buy their Extended Editions buy putting out some sort of other 'Super-Ultimate' Edition or Collection after the third film is out. So your investment in the Extended Editions is safe.'

The source thread is here -> http://www.dvdtalk.com/ourweek/

I have to say I'm actually a bit disappointed about there not being a Lord of the Rings complete Box Set. After all, this isn't like most film franchises, it's essential one film divided into 3 parts like the books.

They can't really improve on the EE's, so I think that it would be best to keep all the EE's exactly the same in such a set, but just combine them in 1 combined 12-disk package. For people who have only bought the theatrical would have a reason to pay full price for the whole boxed set, and for those like me buying all the EE's it would be great if they could do an offer a deal whereby you could just buy the special packaging in which to put your existing DVD's. It wouldn't cost a great deal, and it would actually be a good example of New Line rewarding the loyalty of it's fans. :)

Well that's reassuring, though I would've loved a nice big box set with the films edited together with some changes like changing Gollum from FOTR to be consistent with him in TTT. Not to mention the added goodies of even more deleted/extended/aternate scenes, and that 36 minute film PJ and the crew used to sell the picture to NL.

I noticed that too, it's strange in 3 ways - i) the colour ii) the shape ('squashed') iii) the 'New Line Platinum Series' line which doesn't appear on the UK versions.

Don't worry, it's definitely the same red version for the UK as everywhere else shows it. Strange thing is that Amazon had the red version when (the pic) was first released, but they also used dfferent artwork for the FOTR: EE - and still do!

a snippet from an interview with the EE DVD producer Michael Pellerin supposedly from Ultimate DVD magazine in the UK:

Will the extras on the extended cut of The Two Towers reflect those on The Fellowship of the Ring ?

The appendices were designed to be like the films - three parts as a whole. The stories that you saw begun in the first dvd are now continued in the second and will be concluded in the third. There is another documenatary on book to script, another one on Tolkien...
All of this was a fascinating experience for me because I got to design a multi year project, where the stories get unfolded.

That being said, what's different ? We're doing an entire documentary on Gollum, which isn't just a visual effects documentary. It's about how was the character written ? How was he rewritten ? How was he designed ? What part did performance play in it ? How was he animated ? All these things affected one another, so it's a documentary about all the aspects coming together to create the character. Also we're doing an entire documentary on fight training and the stuntmen.

I think the essential difference between the first extended DVD and the second is that on the first we did about 60 interviews just for the dvd - about 180 hours. For this dvd we're doing close to 120 interviews, close to 450 hours. So there are a lot more faces on this one, a lot more stories. You'll see a much more rounder face to the production and cast.

Gandollum

Nice!!! The extras look really good, cant wait, November is sooooo far away.

I had thought that of all 3 films, the EE may be slightly more difficult to pack out with the quality of features than FOTR and ROTK (though still better than almost any other 'special editions') but these new reports lead me to think it will be every bit as good as FOTR EE.

I expect we will have quite a bit on the SFX workd of Gollum/Helm's Deep this time around, which I'm really looking forward to.:)

For some reason, I really love the one of Faramir choking Gollum.

That must be where, as JEDI told us, they make an uneven truce... I hope he says something like, "If you hurt either of these brave hobbits, or succumb to the ring once more, I will track you down and show no mercy when I slit your slimey throat.... Well, off you go now :)"

Ok everyone, I know the TTT Theatrical Cut DVD will be out in only 1 week, but not everybody will be getting hold of it on release, so here is the most exhaustive collection of screen caps of the TTT EE DVD and ROTK previews I have found. There are so many pictures that there's no point posting them all in these forums, so I'll just provide the link below. Enjoy. :)

I know, I don't quite understand why people don't just check the other threads on the front page first when posting all the pics. It's not difficult as the 'official' TTT and ROTK threads have been in the top half of the page for most of the time I've been at this place.

Newbies I can forgive, but Gandollum, tsk, tsk. ;)

The Moose

this wasn't even a picture thread to start with, but the pictures are stuff from the DVD, so they are relevant to this thread. yeah, i agree that there are too many threads with pics in them. someone needs to get them all together, links too, and put them in the thread by the name of ROTK spoiler pics inside. that was the original piture thread. or we could just get all the pics, and put them in a thread, with no other thxt, so it would pretty much be a photo gallery, with no words. is it just me that finds the writing and all the other stuff in the thread?

adt100
08-20-2003, 03:26 AM
Jedi5150 started the ROTK pic thread and Rizo started this thread. If I get the time I may do an update page with links to every single pic in the ROTK thread.

(BTW, just seen the first TTT DVD advert while typing this :) )

so have i. the first, i saw on NZ TV a few weeks ago, which was pretty good for an ad, and the second i got earlier today, i think that i got it from TORN, but i might not have. it was in WMP, and overall, it was 30 seconds, but about 10 seconds was movie footage, 10 was an ad for some phone or something like that, and the other 10 seconds was just titles, like August 26 and so on

Note that Scene 12 in the EE is called "The Fate of Merry and Pippin", whereas in the Theatrical version it is titled as "Traces of Merry and Pippin". I wonder why they've changed the scene name? :clown:

Also, just to note: there seems to be 2 totally new scenes before "On the Trail of the Uruk-hai", 7 new scenes before "Gollum and Sméagol" and 8 new scenes before "The Story Foreseen From Lórien". :applaud:

I asked that question on TORn a few days ago, and apparently there hasn't been any news of EE chapter listings. I suppose it won't be long now, though.

Maybe the blue hue on the menus are due to their locations.

A colder (bluer) location for Disc One and a warmer one for two.

jedi, how long does that sequence last for? that's the same one that we saw boromir saying "The city is reclaimed..for Gondor (soldiers cheer)" or is that at a different time?

JEDI_THE_WHITE
09-05-2003, 11:40 PM
It is a good long scene. Yes that part with Bormir reclaiming the city of Osgiliath for Gondor is part of the flashback.

One reason it is a long one is because we don't just see Faramir and Boromir, we meet Denethor and see this family interact.

DolAmroth
09-05-2003, 11:44 PM
I cant wait to see Denethor. He was always an interesting character. I never really new why he loved Boromir so much more. I mean in the preview he doesnt even seem to care about his son. "Do not bother me with faramir, I know his uses and they are few"
