I hate to say this, but Equilibrium IS the most underrated film of 2002. Since I know someone will disagree, who's ready to argue?

A lot of people disliked Signs and Minority Report didn't win the oscar it so richly deserved

I would have to agree... it got no press coverage... the press didn't even fart on this title and most people never heard of it.

FRAILTY (just saw it three days ago, a brilliant thriller!)
THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO

Personally, I think "Minority Report" is overrated.

Yup, and it's a damn shame too. That movie is better than most of the stuff produced by Hollywood in 2002.

Spirited Away- maybe. It won the Oscar, but I don't think too many people saw it

Gangs of New York - a terrific film IMO, but the critics and the audiences were split and the movie did so-so box office

Yeah, well I like the ending. It was a nice twist to what could have been the typical Hollywood ending. And besides, Amsterdam would've gotten "butchered" anyway!

Most underrated has to go to The Count of Monte Cristo. That movie was wonderful, IMO. It is a shame that a movie whose production staff payed such incredibly close attention to detail, who director captured the wonder and pain of that time in history, and whose actors did such a great job, did NOT get any real recognition.

I would place this just below "Equilibrium" for underrated. It's funny how both were released by the Mouse House.

I'll agree with everyone who said "Moonlight Mile" and "Gangs of New York," and I'll add a third, "Brotherhood of the Wolf." Of course, any movie, that I enjoy, which makes both the critics' best and worst list for that year, as all those three movies did, is an underrated movie (IMHO).

Red Dragon

Add The Two Towers to that list for not winning best picture, if thats not underrated then I don't know what is.;)
Just kidding.
Anyway, I will say The Count of Monte Cristo, very good film I was glad I catch it at the movie theater. It was hardly advertised.

Great movie, that everybody ignored. (At least they gave it cinematography, which it so richly deserved)

The Lord of the Rings movies are underrated. Not in the media field, but in awards. like the oscars. Ok, maybe its not the "best", but it deserves more than "Sound" and "Editing"!!

i will say the lord the rings movies, i know they were big blockbuster movies but i thought they should have won more at the oscars also. i think that whoever votes on the oscars hold it against any movie that makes money.

I have a few more but these 2 movies were completely ignored and most people didn't see them.
Another thing, movies that make over 100 million and get nominated for oscars can not be underrated movies. This movies get huge coverage for months before and after they are released.
And another thing, don't get mad if your favortie movie does not get nomited or does not win an Oscar. What are the Oscars anyway?? what do they mean? if you feel your favorite move was the best of the year, then that should be enough. Some of my favorite movies of all time like Seven, Usual Suspects, Fight Club, ¨
American Psycho and Pi were not even nominated and they are way, way , way better than Oscar winners like Chicago, Beautiful Mind, Shakespeare in Love, Titanic and others.

The Oscars...don't mean much anymore....Though they do have some importance and hit the targets at least some of the time..

Last time I remember them being accurate was with Schindler's List.
