Plot Summary:
"Portrait of Wally" traces the history of artist Egon Schiele's celebrated 1912 painting of the same name, the pride of the Leopold Museum in Vienna, as it is caught in a 13 year legal battle between the Austrian museum and the Jewish family from whom the Nazis seized the art in 1939. Nearly sixty years after World War II, the painting surfaced on the walls of the Museum of Modern Art, triggering a historic court case that pitted the Manhattan District Attorney, the United States Government and the heirs of Viennese gallery owner Lea Bondi against the Leopold Museum and MoMA. The "Wally" case brought the history of Nazi art loot into the open, showing that institutions could be held accountable for holding art stolen during the Holocaust.
