Plot Summary: The two "Hobbit" films – "The Hobbit" and its sequel – are scheduled to be shot simultaneously, with pre-production beginning as soon as possible.

Originally principal photography was tentatively set for a 2009 start, with the intention of "The Hobbit" release slated for 2012 and its sequel the following year, in 2013. - However both films are on indefinite hold until the issues with MGM's ownership are resolved.

Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh will serve as Executive Producers of two films based on "The Hobbit."

finally!!!!! they're making the hobbitt! I've been waiting years for this! Looks like I'll have to wait a few more to see it, but im SO happy Peter Jackson is at least involved in the movie, if he's not directing it.

this isn't "The Hobbit" movie guys, its the "Appendix movie". "The Hobbit" is going to be one movie, then the filmakers are going to take Tolkien's supplementary notes (the 100-page long Appendix he added to the end of LOTR) and create an entirely new movie, set between Hobbit and LOTR. I imagine it will be a series of vignettes covering various character backstories, bridging the gap between Hobbit and setting up for LOTR: the biggest storyline will be Aragorn's rise from boy raised at Rivendell to Chieftain of the Rangers of the North, etc.

While not based on one book in particular, the "Appendix" contains a LOT of backstory information and fans WERE clamoring for this to be told in some form.
