Plot Summary: The documentary "Religulous" follows political humorist and author Bill Maher ("Real Time With Bill Maher," "Politically Incorrect") as he travels around the globe interviewing people about God and religion. Yay for atheism! With religion gone, humanity will have no cause to quarrel amongst themselves anymore! Oh, except for political reasons...and, um, natural resources of course...uh, border disputes...what color skin a person has...and money, can't forget that...um...hmm. But, you know, at least with religion gone we won't have fundamentalist leaders who oppress others...except for um, Stalin...and Hitler...who I guess sort of outlawed religion in their countries and made a smashing go of it. How dare anyone believe something that can't be proven. After all, we've proven that god doesn't exist, right? The scientific community of the world has the data to back that up? Because the lack of data to prove it means it doesn't exist, right? Or, wait, maybe not...but of course all religious people are slaves to a false belief system, and have no free will of their own...real scumbags like Mother Theresa and Maya Angelou. And religious "folk" have no doubts about existence or reality, and never question what it all means. I'm glad Bill Maher, who hates not only religion but also marriage and even the basic idea of romantic love, is there to show us the light. The guy is the epitome of a midlife crisis, desperately bragging about sleeping with nearly underage girls and how pot will save the world. But he'll show us zealots the light. I'm glad after 2000 years of scholarly debate, he's the one who's going to put the nail in the coffin of these "fantasies". No one else has ever tried, of course. The idea of faith is actually so brittle, that of course the merest suggestion of its flaws will destroy it. Faith has never been challenged, after all. Sigh. Thank god (no wait, thank Bill) for Bill Maher.

I've also got to say, in response to the little plot summary above..."astute analytical skills"? Spare me. The guy was a fourth tier hack of a stand-up comic, with an ugly mullet and a long list of bad movie credentials from the 1980s, until the fact that he had a big mouth got him his own talk show. Now I'm constantly seeing the guy act like a professor of philosophy on his show. There's no denying he's got a brain, but he's actually guilty of something he's also calling other people out on - close-mindedness. If anyone knows his background, they'll see why he hates religion, and it wasn't based on any logical disassembling of the ideas of faith. It was because he was part-Jewish, part-Christian, and couldn't reconcile the two in his life, so he basically turned against Christianity (pretty much keeping the Jewish belief system). It's true that he never goes after Judaism on his show, or Buddishm, or wiccans. If we're going to throw the baby out with the bathwater, lets just get rid of any concept which can't be proven, so most of the work of the great philosophers, Socrates, Plato...that's out the window. I actually loved seeing Maher taken to task a few weeks ago by Cornel West, an actual professor and scholar who defended Christianity, and particularly Catholicism, to Maher, who seemed surprised that someone religious could be insightful, questioning, and intelligent. Shows how much Maher and many religion haters know.

It won't make skeptics of believers anymore than similar Christian flicks have made believers of skeptics, but there isn't much mainstream criticism of religion on this scale in the world. Even moderate success could generate some waves of interest among viewers, so I can admire the effort for its potential to spark more dialogue from a non-religious perspective.
