Plot Summary: Based on an extraordinary true story, "Defiance" is an epic tale of family, honor, vengeance and salvation in World War II. The year is 1941 and the Jews of Eastern Europe are being massacred by the thousands. Managing to escape certain death, three brothers take refuge in the dense surrounding woods they have known since childhood. There they begin their desperate battle against the Nazis. Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell star as brothers who turn a primitive struggle to survive into something far more consequential – a way to avenge the deaths of their loved ones by saving thousands of others.

At first it is all they can do to stay alive. But gradually, as whispers of their daring spreads, they begin to attract others – men and women, young and old – willing to risk everything for the sake of even a moment's freedom. Tuvia (Craig) is a reluctant leader and his decisions are challenged by his brother, Zus (Schreiber) who worries that Tuvia's idealistic plans will doom them all. Asael (Bell) is the youngest – caught between his brothers' fierce rivalry. As a brutal winter descends, they work to create a community, and to keep faith alive when all humanity appeared to be lost.

comingsoon.com credits the movie "Defiance" as being based on a non-fiction work by Nechama Tec entitled DEFIANCE. I just finished reading Peter Duffy's non-fiction book THE BIELSKI BROTHERS which is the true story of three men from Belarus who defied the Nazis, built a village in the forest and saved 1200 Jews. Their names were Tuvia, Zus and Asael Bielski. The book was published in 2003 by Harper Collins. Are there two books that cover this story?

This is the penultimate release for Paramount Vantage. They just merged with Paramount Pictures. Come to think of it, shouldn't this be a Paramount Picture, not an Paramount Vantage release?

I think Zwick and Craig will make a perfect combination, especially if the movie is based upon "The Bielski Brothers".

Nechama Tec was born in Poland in 1931 and survived the War by pretending she was Christian. She migrated to the US in 1952 with her husband Leon Tec.
Belarus (the scene of the movie) at that time was close by and she might have even been involved with helping the refugees. However she is not an eyewittness of the story and she is not a historian thus her story lacks some hard facts.
The Bielski Bros were in the fighting resistance and have saved many lives however they were not saint and also have some innocent civilian deaths on their list. Maybe civilians were killed by accident but nevertheless it did happen. Guerilla groups fighting in the woods anywhere in the World often raid civilian villages in search for food and when there is not enough food even for the village then only armed people survive. That's life I guess.

I am extremely glad to hear that the story of the russian partisans of world war II is being told. As my great grandfather was in the russian special forces in world war II and outfitted the partisans with weapons and intelligence.He use to tell me great stories about how brave these people were to fight against the nazi's with no military training. This will be a great film

it look good, is not always that you get to see a film like this except in schindler list.
