Plot Summary: Based on a true story, "The Express" follows the extraordinary life of college football hero Ernie Davis (Rob Brown), the first African-American to win the Heisman Trophy. His fight for equality and respect forever changed the face of American sports, and his story continues to inspire new generations.

Raised in poverty in Pennsylvania coal-mining country, Davis hurdled social and economic obstacles to become one of the greatest running backs in college football history. Under the guidance of legendary Syracuse coach Ben Schwartzwalder (Dennis Quaid), he became a hero who superseded Jim Brown's achievements and set records that stand to this day.

Decorated veteran Schwartzwalder was a Southerner with a single vision of a national championship and hardened ideas about how the world worked. But though he and Davis clashed mightily, he taught the player everything he knew about football, just as Davis helped him learn the true meaning of victory.

As the growing civil rights movement divided the country in the '60s, Davis became a symbol for achievement that transcended race. Refusing to flinch from others' prejudices, he achieved all his goals—until he faced a challenge that would make most men crumble. He joined the ranks of black pioneers by teaching a generation tolerance, inspiring a movement that smashed barriers on and off the field.

Is this movie really rated PG?? It looks more like a PG-13 to me (the above lists it as PG-13 but the offical website says PG).

ya it looks cool! and having gone to ernie davis jr high school and still living in Elmira we are always living in Ernie's gaint shadow! it does appear to take some liberties from the actual truth but that's ok. it's great that somebody finally did a flick on this unsung americian hero! and they should have made the title his real nickname of "The Elmira Express" instead of shortning it. and that plot summary is wrong cause he was born in pa but raised in elmira but minor flaws to what looks like a very good telling of the legend of Ernie!

Yes it looks like a great movie, but this is the second time I've seen a movie where they stereotyped Texans in the 50's-60's as the most rascist state in the country. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it TEN times worse in the Southeast? Just wondering....

My bud was supposed to be in this movie. They asked him to be a hot dog vendor, but he was in San Fran and they needed him in Chicago. Major bummer

Just saw a screening of this last night in Chciago and it was very well done. I'd see it again without hesitation.
