Plot Summary: "Avatar," a live action film with a new generation of special effects, takes us to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads an epic battle to save a civilization. James Cameron, the Oscar-winning director of "Titanic," first conceived the film years ago, when the means to realize his vision did not yet exist. Now, after four years of actual production work, "Avatar" delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the sweep of the story.

The story's hero is Jake Sully, a former Marine confined to a wheelchair. Bitter and disillusioned, he's still a warrior at heart. All Jake ever wanted was something worth fighting for, and he finds it in the place he least expected: on a distant world. Jake has been recruited to join an expedition to the moon Pandora, which corporate interests are strip-mining for a mineral worth $20 million per kilogram on Earth. To facilitate their work, the humans use a link system that projects a person's consciousness into a hybrid of humans and Pandora's indigenous humanoids, the Na'vi. This human-Na'vi hybrid – a fully living, breathing body that resembles the Na'vi but possesses the individual human's thoughts, feelings and personality – is known as an "avatar."

In his new avatar form, Jake can once again walk. His mission is to interact with and infiltrate the Na'vi with the hope of enlisting their help – or at least their acquiescence – in mining the ore. A beautiful Na'vi female, Neytiri, saves Jake's life, albeit reluctantly, because even in his avatar body, Jake represents to her the human encroachment on the Na'vi's unspoiled world.

As Jake's relationship with Neytiri deepens, along with his respect for the Na'vi, he faces the ultimate test as he leads an epic conflict that will decide nothing less than the fate of an entire world.

There's gonna be a lot of angry people asking for their money back because they thought this had to do with the Nickelodeon "Avatar: The Last Airbender" character and the upcoming M. Night Shyamalan trilogy. I'm a fan of Cameron's work, but seriously why are they using the name "Avatar" in Cameron's film? Is it just a catchy name James Cameron wanted to slap onto his film? Nothing in the above description even remotely resembles anything to do with being an avatar. He might as well have called this film "Shiny, Red Fire Engine." I know Cameron's been working on this film for about 10 years, but he should title the film something that has to do with the plot. It would be smart business sense and show a lot of grace on his part. Otherwise, he risks being labeled "the man" by a whole group of fans of the other film.

Avatar has everything to do the title, it's the original and proper name for a second life.

It's to do with this eco-parable plot of a man merging with an alien therefore creating a second life for itself.

It's only because I've been doing a dissertation on the word and its proper meaning!!

I don't understand how the ASSUMPTION of a second life fits into the definition of "avatar," which is the INCARNATION of a spirit into a person - like the Christian god into Jesus or Hindu god Vishnu into Buddha.

The "essence of being," notably outside of time, is the common denominator of what constitutes a god throughout the formative religious movements - viz. Hebrew Ehyeh Asher Ehyeh, "I will be what I will be," and Egyptian Xeper Xepera Xeperu, "I Have Come Into Being, and by the Process of my Coming Into Being, the Process of Coming Into Being is Established." Both of these formed the basis of our culture's dominant religion. So...

What does this essential concept of avatar that permeates our major religions have to do with the act of SYMBIOSIS, which it seems Cameron's character is undergoing in his film? Is there something unique to the Hindu perspective that I've missed, which would explain this seeming chasm of difference?

I admit I'm biased cuz I'm rooting for Shyamalan's film (and not only because it has precedent in popular culture), but I do like Cameron's story as I'm coming to know it and this concept of Second-life but it implies time as a factor and possibly sequence a result. Is this not counterintuitive to what our culture says an avatar should be?

I would think instead of "Avatar" James Cameron should want to title his film "SYMBIOSIS" then. It seems to fit the description better, it's still a catchy name with potential box-office draw AND it's easy to put up on a marquee. Everybody wins!

This article is about the concept in Hindu philosophy. For other uses, see Avatar (disambiguation).

Hindu philosophy, an avatar (also spelled as avatara) (Sanskrit: अवतार, avatāra), most commonly refers to the incarnation (bodily manifestation) of a divine being (deva), or the Supreme Being (God) onto planet Earth. The Sanskrit word avatāra- literally means "descent" (avatarati) and usually implies a deliberate descent into lower realms of existence for special purposes. The term is used primarily in Hinduism, for incarnations of Vishnu whom many Hindus worship as God. Shiva and Ganesha are also described as descending in the form of avatars, with the Ganesha Purana and the Mudgala Purana detailing Ganesha's avatars specifically.

The word has also been used by extension to refer to the incarnations of God or highly influential teachers in other religions, especially by adherents to Dharmic Traditions when explaining figures such as Jesus.
