Plot Summary:
Set aboard a hulking fishing vessel as it navigates the treacherous waves off the New England coast—the setting of Melville’s Moby-Dick—Leviathan propels the viewer into the rhythmic horrors of the sea and the men who live in it. Castaing-Taylor and Paravel strapped dozens of waterproof cameras to workers, decks, hulls and cranes, to capture the perspectives of fisherman, fish, and seagulls with a stunning you-are-there immediacy. The images and rhythms of life at sea form a sensory journey that is far more than the sum of its parts. Part ethnographic investigation and part impressionist experiment, Leviathan is unlike anything seen before—a purely visceral cinematic experience.
