Musicals of Groundhog Day and Tangled on the Way!

Two decidedly different (though both beloved) movies are getting the musical stage show treatment soon, as the 1993 Bill Murray comedy Groundhog Day and 2010 Disney hit Tangled are both being transformed into musicals.

First up is Tangled, which grossed nearly $600 million worldwide, and will be adapted to the stage for debut on Disney Cruise Line‘s Disney Magic this November. This lavish retelling of the Rapunzel fairytale will feature three new songs created exclusively for this show by Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken and Grammy Award-winning lyricist Glenn Slater. It will feature favorite characters like Rapunzel, Flynn Rider, the villainous Mother Gothel and Maximus the police horse.

Further on the horizon is Columbia Stage Live’s 2017 Groundhog Day Broadway musical, which according to Variety will feature a book written by Danny Rubin, who wrote the story and co-wrote the screenplay for the movie with late director Harold Ramis. Since then he only has one other produced credit to his name, the irreverent 1994 comedy S.F.W., despite writing many other scripts as seen on his website. Rubin has also taught writing at places like Harvard and the Sundance Institute. Also on board is the team that recently adapted “Matilda” to the stage, including composer-lyricist Tim Minchin, director Matthew Warchus, choreographer Peter Darling and set and costume designer Rob Howell. Scott Rudin and Andre Ptaszynski will produce for a 2017 debut.
